Unsettled
Tumblr media
Boys night. The 3rd Saturday of every month was the boys dedicated to spending time with each other with no distractions or at least not major distractions. This time it was being hosted at Shawn’s house and the 5 of them (Shawn, Connor, Brian, Geoff, and Zubin) were lounging on the sofas with the hockey on tv whilst beers waited on the table, ready to be sipped from.
Daniella, little 2 year old Daniella was upstairs in bed having been tucked in by Shawn around 7pm with a story and song whilst her mum went out to do her Night Shift as a nurse at the local hospital. Shawn made sure the boys weren’t too loud and the tv was turned to a suitable volume and he’d take the boys teasing ‘over protective dad’ jokes if it meant his little girl got a good nights sleep. What Shawn didn’t know was that despite being quieter than usual the noise they made still woke Daniella up from her sleep.
Daniella slept like a light; it didn’t take much noise to wake her up and sometimes Shawn wondered whether she was only pretending to sleep with how easily she was awoken. Of course like any child she had her nights where she slept like a log and could only wake herself up but those were rare nights. With a purple blanket hooked on her arm and a stuffed rabbit in her left hand and pacifier in mouth, Daniella slowly climbed down the stairs despite knowing she wasn’t to go on the stairs alone. Her parents weren’t overly over protective but like all parents they wanted her to be safe and that meant assisting the toddler up the wooden large stairs.
“Dada” The whine left her lips as she walked into the living room where all the boys were. Her feet halted when her dad was nowhere in the room all the noise was coming from.
“Hey Dani.” Brian smiled as he noticed her in the doorway.
“Dada” The recently turned 2 year old repeated, not knowing many other words to explain herself. Before anyone could reply to her, she turned around and headed off to somewhere else in her house. Her playroom. Spending hours a day in there she never got bored and she knew her dad would think she was in bed still so she decided it was time to play again.
Shawn returned to the living room after heading to the bathroom and before he could sit back down and sip his beer Brian piped up, “Daniella’s out of bed man in case you wanted to go find her.” Shawn groaned playfully as his lips turned upwards at the thought of seeing little Daniella.
“Daniella where are you honey?” Shawn called out through the house checking the playroom first.
“Dada!” She clapped when he came inside the room. She toddled over to him and pulled his hand Trying to bring him into the tea party she was hosting.
“Oh no, no missy it’s bedtime. You’ve gotta go night night.” He cooed as he lifted her up onto his hip. Her bottom lip pushed out and wobbled as her eyes widened.
“No. No. No. Dada no sleep!“ she cried as he carried her out the room and as he reached the bottom of the stairs she started hitting his back. Obviously it didn’t hurt him seeing as she was only 2 and wasn’t very strong like she thought she was. But it shocked Shawn nonetheless considering how against hitting and violence he and his wife were and never expected his daughter to hit him.
“Daniella we do not hit other people, okay? That’s not nice.” Shawn informed sternly. At his stern tone the tired girl started crying and Shawn sighed when she rested her head on his shoulder and sobbed.
“Come on, don’t cry sweet girl, it’s okay but hitting isn’t okay so you need to say sorry to daddy.”
“I’m sorry dada. Mumma home?”
“Mummy won’t be home till the morning Dani. Do you wanna come cuddle with daddy or do you want to go lay in your bed?”
“Warm milk” Daniella wasn’t usually given warm milk at night anymore seeing as it was making her wake up more in the night but Shawn wanted her to settle which meant he was going to give her warm milk tonight. Shawn carried her into the living room and handed her over to Brian who took her blanket and put it over her head as a joke. It didn’t take long for Shawn to scoop his kid up with one arm and her bottle of milk in the other before sitting down on the sofa making sure Daniella was comfy and warm next to him in the corner.
Sipping on the straw of her cup, she watched the men laugh and talk and laugh some more and she wiggled her hips trying to get comfier. Instead of continuing to get comfy on the sofa she climbed onto Shawn and snuggled her head into his chest. It only took a minute. Just a minute of Shawn lightly rubbing her back and being there for her to fall asleep on him like he was her personal bed. The boys night continued and Shawn took Daniella back up to bed when he was sure she was definitely asleep. His phone ring and an unknown caller flashed on the screen. Answering it he was skeptical as to who it was and why they were calling, his heart dropped further than his stomach when it was the hospital. He’d watched greys anatomy with his wife Olivia, sure, but he never expected he’d feel as if he was living in an episode himself.
“If you could come down to the hospital as soon as possible that would be great” the nurse on the phone said calmly as if she didn’t just inform Shawn his wife , the love of his life, was currently laying in bed in the icu fighting for her life after a freak accident occurring during her Night Shift.
“Of course.” Shawn hung up the phone and looked at his friends before standing up and announcing to his mates, “You guys have to go, I’m sorry but liv’s in the hospital and I need to be there.” Everyone understood of course and saw shawn beginning to panic and knew better than to push for questions.
“What are you doing with Daniella?” Brian asked as shawn pulled a hoodie on.
“I have no idea Bri, I don’t know what shape she’s in so I don’t wanna bring Dani if she’s in a bad state up there.”
“Yeah, I can stay here and watch her and just make sure she’s okay if you want me too.”
“Really? I’d owe you big time, she’ll stay asleep for the night till around 7 and if she does wake up just try filing her bottle up with warm milk and ready a story and I’ll call her in the morning.” Shawn said giving Brian a hug before he rushed out the house and to the hospital.
“Mama? Dada?” Daniella yelled as loud as she could as she walked out of their empty bedroom. Brian hearing her awake walked out the guest room and held her small hand.
“Mummy and daddy aren’t here at the moment Dani, mummy got hurt so dad’s gone to check she’s okay.”
“Mumma” she cried plopping down to the floor and Brian sighed as he didn’t know what to do now. Thankfully Shawn seemed to come right at the perfect time as he called Brian.
“Hey shawn, how is she?”
“She’s good, resting right now. How’s Daniella?”
“I think she’s confused as to why you aren’t here, here Daniella look it’s your dad” he said crouching down to Daniella on the floor.
“Hey Dani bear what’s the matter? Why’s my baby crying?”
“Mumma”
“Mumma’s here look honey, she’s sleeping but she’s a little hurt. Do you want some breakfast?” He asked trying to distract her and make sure she ate.
“Mumma dada no here”
“I’m right here Dani, Brian can you get her dressed and bring her to the hospital?” Shawn finally asked seeing she obviously wasn’t going to settle not that he blamed her; Waking up to neither parents at home was very unsettling. Brian nodded immediately and hung up the phone saying a goodbye and taking Daniella to get dressed.
“Dada!” Daniella cried as she ran over to him once her eyes caught sight of her father in the hospital waiting room. Crouching down Shawn picked her up and cuddled her close and inhaled her fainting baby scent. Brian said a quick goodbye to the two before heading home to his girlfriend.
“Miss dada.” She spoke resting her head on his shoulder.
“Missed you too honey.”
“No leave ‘gain!” She pouted, pulling her head back to look at his face.
“I promise i’m not going to leave you again. Neither will mummy”
“Where is mummy?”
“Come on let’s go find her, you’ve got to be quiet though because she got hurt and needs to rest.”
Shawn carried her down the corridor with a small smile on his face as he listened to his little girl tell him all about her dream.

Don’t cry
“Pancakes and syrup for one little lady.” Shawn announced placing a plate in front of a pyjama clad Layla as she awaited her breakfast at the table. She gave him a toothy smile and began eating her food whilst Shawn and his wife began eating theirs once taking their seats.
“Are you excited for today honey?” Layla looked up at the question and after flickering her eyes between her parents she sighed and cast her eyes down to her food. The parents began telling her how fun it’ll be for her and she’ll be coming home in no time. The rambling ceased, however, when their little curly brown haired girl let out a sniffle with tensed shoulders.
“Layla? What’s wrong bunny?” Shawn questioned as he stood up to crouch in front of her, his wife following his actions.
“I don’t wanna go” The cry was to be expected because today was a big day for her and Shawn if they were being honest, it was almost a miracle he hadn’t cried yet as they spent the past week anticipating today.
“Don’t cry bunny,  you’ll have so much fun, you’ve got your backpack and your lunch box and you can eat with all your new friends,” Shawn listed as he took her small hand in his incredibly larger sized hand. It took a couple minutes but the family of three were back to sitting in their seats and finishing off their breakfasts with jokes and giggles.
“Oh my gosh, Layla look at you! You’re so cute...my baby’s all grown up, let me get a picture of you”  Shawn exclaimed and his voice didn’t hide how proud he was of his girl as it was crystal clear to everyone who heard it that he prided himself in calling Layla Mendes his daughter.
“Okay okay daddy, is that enough photos yet? I’ve done like every pose there is to do!” Layla groaned playfully 5  minutes later, a smile still on his face, when Shawn was still taking photos of her in her uniform. Reluctantly agreeing, Shawn put his phone away and once they’d all buckled into the car they drove to the school. Shawn’s eyes grew glossy and puffy as he tried not to cry as he watched Layla play tag outside the school gates with a girl she’d been in nursery with. He wasn’t the overly overprotective father but this was his little Layla. And he was about to watch her walk into school for the first time. Sure, he’d gotten a little emotional the first time he dropped her 3 year old self off at nursery for 3 hours but she was 5 now and about to be away from him from 9 till 3. She was his only baby and she was growing up and he did not like it for the most part.
Standing outside the classroom, it was Shawn’s turn to hug her goodbye. A frown appeared on Layla’s face as she took in her father’s face.
“Why are you sad?” she inquired, head tilting to the right as she awaited the answer.
“I just don’t like how you’re growing up so much so quickly bunny.” A tear slipped out his eye and a few more followed in succession when her pudgy fingers wiped the original one away.
“Don’t cry daddy, I promise I’ll be okay.”

Run away Teddy
Tumblr media
“Teddy! Oh my god Teddy come back now!” Daniella’s attempts to get the Cockapoo back over to her on the path were all unsuccessful yells. However, they were attracting quite a lot of strange glances in her direction from the people on the nature walk in Miami that afternoon. Running her fingers through her long hair she groaned and began to slowly walk closer to the edge of the steep hill to get her younger sister’s dog back; she wouldn’t even be in this situation right now if her sister hadn’t fallen off the trampoline at her 12th birthday party. Never again would she be walking the hyperactive dog.
Shawn and his group of friends consisting of Brian, Connor, Geoff, Teddy and Camila were all making their way down the hill. Or at least Shawn was beginning to make their trek down there, the rest were all at the top filming Shawn flex his muscles jokingly.
“Run away from a secret relationship Teddy?” Brian teased when they heard the yells from the stranger. The group laughed but it was quickly shut down when a small fluffy ball of fur ran around their legs licking at Connor’s ankles. Footsteps approached the group, and they turned to see Daniella walking towards them looking beyond stressed and about ready to cry when the dog turned around and slowly headed down the dusty track to the bottom of the hill.
“Excuse me” She mumbled quietly as she followed the dog. Shawn was quick to catch the dog and pick him up before he could run off any further. His eyes trailed down her body from the strand of her blocking her brown eyes from seeing anything all the way down to her trainer clad feet.
“Thank you so much” She told Shawn as she clipped him back on the leash and put him on the floor again knowing he couldn’t go anywhere. If she hadn’t felt stupid before for not being able to catch the tiny thing, she certainly did now for putting the dog on the floor. Just as Daniella turned to begin walking back up the hill, a sudden tug on the other end of the leash sent her spinning back around and heading straight for the floor as the dog tried continuing its way down the path this time dragging Daniella along. Shawn reached his hands out and placed a foot forward and caught the 22-year old before she could hit the ground.
“I’m sorry I don’t usually walk him so I don’t really know how to keep him under control.” she whispered as she stared into his eyes.
“Don’t apologize Hun, it’s okay. I have a boisterous dog too back home.”
He has to have been made by God himself, she thought to herself, There’s no way someone can look that good naturally.
“Back home? Why didn’t you bring him along today? Surely he would have loved to come down this dusty trail with you.” She teased smiling at him as she reminded him he was the only person to have even thought of taking this path.
“Back home in Canada with my parents.”
“Are you here on holiday then or did you move here for a while?”
“Nah I’m just here for work for a short time and then I’ll be heading back home. How about you, eh? Where are you from?”
“Born and raised in Miami” she sighed
“Come on, It can’t be that bad here in Miami. It’s great here, what’s not to love about the dusty trails and humid air.”
“Just have a lot of bad memories here,” The sound of her phone ringing interrupted the conversation and just like that the two were brought back into reality, “I have to go. I’m sorry it was uh nice meeting you and thanks for helping me with the dog.” The sense of urgency in her voice didn’t go unnoticed by Shawn who nodded and gently took her unlocked phone from her hand and entered his phone number into her contacts.
“Call me if you wanna talk again soon.”
She smiled at him knowing she’d need at least 5 drinks before she could call him and talk to him again. In her mind, he was the equivalent of a fricking God himself with those abs and that jaw line as sharp as can be; Lord knows he’s good in bed. Her eyes widened at the thought of being in his bed, and she squeezed her thighs together before hurriedly walking back to the top. Without even looking back, she broke into a  jog as she hurried to help her parents.
“Dude, she was totally into you.” Brian chuckled as he made his way down the trail.
“Nah, I don’t think she was.”
“Mate she was 100% into you. I swear I saw her squeeze her thighs together a little before she left.”
“Ooo someone wants to bone little Shawnie” Brian teased causing everyone to fall into a fit of giggles as if they were teenagers. Shawn slipped as he turned around whilst laughing which further provoked his friends to laugh even harder until they were nearly crying.
“What’s that look for Dani?” Her mother asked as she walked into the kitchen for a drink.
“What look?“ she tried.
“What happened on the walk? Did you meet any boys?”
“Mum!” She whined.
“Oh my god tell me everything” sometimes Daniella’s mum Sophie was a lot more like her best friend than her mum and Daniella found herself appreciating that more than anything.
“His name was Shawn. Before you ask because I know you will, yes he was cute and gave me his number but I don’t think I’m going to call him.”
“Why not? Sweetie you know I love having you here but don’t you think it’s time to put yourself out there again? Live a little before you turn old and wrinkly.”
“There’s a chance it may not even be his number”
Sophie sighed and before she could say another word Jessica, Her youngest daughter, was calling her name and just couldn’t wait.
“I’ll talk you into it later”
“Hey Dani-boo” Rosie yelled walking into the house. Rosie was Daniella’s best friend and had been for over 10 years now.
“Rosie good you’re here. Maybe you can convince her to call the super hot boy she met on a walk today” Sophie shouted from the stairs.
And with that Rosie went rushing into the kitchen to spill all the details from her best friend.
“Dani if you do not call him and fuck him tonight I will Steal your future boyfriends number and keep him for myself.”
“It’s not that I don’t want to, I just don’t want him to turn out to be exactly the same as you know who”
“I really want to kill that boy for making you afraid of men like this. Daniella you deserve to live that fairy tale ending, the one where the guy sweeps you off your first and the next thing anyone knows yours moving to a different country for him and taking his last name and having a gazillion kids named after me.”
“Just call him, what’s there to loose?” Rosie sighed when her friend didn’t say anything.
“Nothing” Daniella sighed looking down at the contact profile.
“Hello?” Shawn asked tentatively as he stood from the sofa where the group where watching a film later that night.
“Hi. Uh it’s me, Daniella.”
“Daniella? I don’t think I know a Daniella?”
“From earlier. You caught my dog for me on the dusty trail”
“Oh yeah. Sorry it’s just I never caught your name earlier. It’s such a pretty name for you though, suits you perfectly” the genuine tone of his voice made her smile. Her hand reached down to her stomach to try calm the butterflies fluttering rapidly in her stomach as she continued talking to him.

Instagram lives and naps
Tumblr media
“Hey guys!” Shawn greeted as he began getting viewers on his Instagram live on his MacBook. He sat in his home studio with the baby monitor camera open on his phone whilst his 18 month year old slept soundly in her nursery upstairs.
He began to talk to his fans online and even invited a few onto the livestream to ask him questions directly. His eyes darted towards his phone when he heard the unmistakable whine from his daughter. A wide grin spread across his cheeks as he saw his baby girl was awake. He promised his viewers he’d be back in one second and left the room to bring Daniella downstairs to cuddle him. She loved cuddles right after she’s woken up and Shawn was more than willing to give them to her.
“Hey my sweet baby, did you have a nice nap?” His voice sounded through the monitor still on his phone and the comments on his Instagram live became chaotic as everyone freaked out over seeing Shawn be a dad since he didn’t show much of it to the public. Shawn picked her up and she rested her head on his shoulder and sucked on her pacifier as he grabbed her blanket from the crib.
“We’ll get you some food soon bub” he cooed as he walked down the stairs with her. Daniella loved noting more than listening to her father whether it be his songs or him talking about anything and everything and Shawn was more than willing to talk to her even if she didn’t necessarily understand every word.
“Hey guys, look who’s come to join us,” Shawn spoke to the live and turned his phone off since it wasn’t useful anymore. Reading the comments he smiled at how much love his fans were sending, “Let’s invite someone else to the live for a question”
It took a coupon minutes but he soon had a fan called Josie on his Instagram live thinking of a question.
“Hey so I just wanna say you’re such a good dad and your conversation with her a few minutes ago was adorable-” Josie began before pausing whilst Shawn thanked her and then frowned on a second thought.
“What conversation with her?”
“It was when you left the room for a minute”
“You guys heard that?” Shawn chuckled realizing he’d left the monitor on for everyone to hear.

Shopping trip
Tumblr media
“Hold my hand please, Isabella.” Shawn told his 2 year old as he and Brian and tiffany and Geoff walked into the Westfield shopping center in London seeing as it was their latest stop on tour. Shawn knew it would be busy considering it’s London and also a Saturday which meant a lot of people had the day off work and school.
The group walked into the first shop of the day and went off to have a closer look at the clothes calling their names. Isabella puckered her lips and began to lightly bounce on her feet with her hand in Shawn’s as he looked at a top for her.
“What do you think of this Bella?” He asked holding the top out so she could see and watched her closely for a reaction. Standing still now she shook her head rapidly, brown curls flying wildly  in her eyes, although she didn’t give him a verbal response yet.
“What? You don’t like it?”
“Not cute enough daddy.” He stared at his little girl for a moment before he put the top back and smiled at her bluntness and directed them to a different part of the store.
After being rather unsuccessful in finding anything Isabella liked in the first 3 shops, the group were now in a newly opened children’s clothing store.
“Daddy!” The little girl squealed in delight. Shawn turned around from where he was looking at the rail of clothes behind her and saw her arms full of products.
“What’ve you got?” He cooed. In the back of his mind he knew he wouldn’t be buying her all of the stuff in her arms but he knew better than to upset her in a busy place where it was essential she behaved for her safety. Shawn’s mind had an endless list of what could happen to her if she wouldn’t listen to his instructions because she was upset with him and in the middle of a terrible two’s tantrum.
“I want hat pwease” Dropping the other items in her hands she put the hat on and asked with her broken English. Not being able to resist Shawn pulled his phone out and snapped a few pictures of her and then turned her around and took more photos this time doing different poses in the mirror. Brian joined in once he saw what they were up to and 5 minutes later the three of them had cleaned the items off the floor up and returned them and rejoined with the rest of the group.
“I wanna walk daddy.” The demand came not long after leaving the store with the hat on her head as they walked down the steps to the underground.
“Not now honey, we’ve got to get on the train and it’s busy on there so I’ve got to hold you so you don’t get lost.”
“Choo choo train?” Isabella was inquisitive and curious  all the time and whilst everyone loved it all the time, they hated the times they had to try come up with an answer to an awkward question. Once she got a nod in response from her father, Isabella laid her head on his shoulder with one hand on her pink sparkly cap. The underground was busier than they anticipated and when they got on the train and looked around seeing no seats available for the moment they had to settle for standing.
“Tiff managed to get a seat if you wanna go sit Bella with her Shawn.” Geoff informed him and pointed down towards the end of the carriage where his stylist sat.
“Okay Bella you sit here with Tiffany and don’t move whilst I go back to Brian and Geoff.” Shawn told her sternly after checking Tiffany knew they were getting off in 3 stops and could trust her to make sure they got off at the right one safely.
“Come on sleepy Bella, let’s go find mummy.” Shawn said as he took the yawning child from his friend once they got outside the tube station and began the 5 minute walk to the hotel they were staying at.

Just an accident
Tumblr media
Creeping into her dad’s home studio, Aladdin cup filled with water in hand, a soft smile spread on her little lips. 4 year old Daniella was missing her dad greatly. Shawn was on tour in America at the moment and called everyday but to try give Daniella the best chance at a normal childhood, he and his wife Emily decided she would remain at home with their child. Daniella had nursery too now so they definitely didn’t want to pull her out off that when she enjoyed playing with a group of kids her own age and not adults preparing for a show later that day.
She shut the door as quietly as she could and grinned when she didn’t hear her mum coming to find her. She placed her cup on the table where she saw all the recording equipment. A soft gasp left her lips when she noticed Shawn’s favorite notebook resting atop of all the buttons. Soft small hands reached across  to get  the book so she could write her own songs just like her daddy did. Fate wasn’t on her side today though as when she reached over the cup full of her drink tipped over and soaked through the buttons. Staring in shock, she jumped when a small spark elicited from the wet electrics. In her defense, the toddler did try clean it up as she brought her favorite blanket - the same one Shawn gifted her the day she was born - and placed it over the buttons in order to try dry them all.
Her young mind wandered off and instead she wanted to go play one of Shawn’s guitars; At least this way she could still be like him even if the journal he wrote his songs in was now dripping from the pages and practically falling apart. Grinning she walked over to the martin acoustic guitar hung up on the wall. Placing her small hands onto the bottom of the  wood she pushed up, stepping up onto her tiptoes, and released a sigh of relief when she felt it lift above the hook. Unfortunately, Daniella hadn’t accounted for how she was to get the guitar down safely and watched with wide eyes as the guitar fell forward and down towards her. The bottom of the guitar slipped from her fingertips and before Daniella could move out of the way, she felt the guitar hitting her face. The weight and impact of the guitar pushed Daniella to the ground and the guitar strings scratched her face before it turned and the side of the neck of the guitar cracked down onto her head. Laying on the floor with the guitar covering her small body, she let out a blood curling scream.
“Mummy!” She cried loudly as the tears streamed out of her eyes and blood out her head. Her mum dropped the plate she was washing up onto the floor and ran upstairs with panic in her blood.
“Daniella! What happened honey?” Emily asked trying to remain calm for her child. Her heart broke as she listened to her daughter’s distressed screams and cries. Emily picked the guitar up off of her and moved it to the side before sitting Daniella up. Emily bit her lip and ran to the bathroom to get a damp cloth and ran back placing it onto Daniella’s head in attempt to stop the bleeding.
“Come on Dani, we’ve got to go to hospital sweetheart.” Emily picked Daniella  still holding the cloth against her head.
“It hurts mummy” The sob left her mouth and Emily wished Shawn was here to help them as she slipped her shoes on and grabbed her keys.
“I know baby, I know. But I need you to hold this cloth against your head for me while we’re in the car.” As she strapped Daniella into her car seat in the back of the car, Emily  heard the sound of another car pulling up.
“Did I get the wrong time?” Karen asked stepping out of her car and heading over to Emily’s range rover where Daniella could be heard crying.
“No you didn’t but Dani’s had an accident and I need to take her to the hospital.”
“Oh no, do you need any help with her?”
“Do you mind sitting in the back with her and holding the cloth against her head?” Karen smiled softly and nodded before climbing into the backseat.
Karen and Emily sat by the hospital bed as they waited for the doctor to bring Daniella’s prescription of painkillers she could take over the next few days if she needed to. Daniella had stopped crying a little while ago and had fallen asleep after they had stitched her head back together.
“Does Shawn know what’s happened yet?” Karen asked taking a sip of her coffee. Emily shook her head slowly, “I’m gonna tell him but everything happened so fast that I haven’t found time to do it.”
“Mrs. Mendes, here’s the prescription for Daniella and I need you to sign the discharge papers here and then again here.” The doctor said as he returned and handed over the papers to Emily. After signing the discharge papers, Emily picked Daniella up whilst Karen gathered all their belongings and the three headed out to the car and back home.
“Thank you for your help today.” Emily voiced as she hugged Karen before she left not long after they’d gotten home seeing as it was getting late. Daniella remained asleep so Emily tucked her into her bed for an early night before going to have a tea with Karen. Emily cautiously walked upstairs to the studio room where she found Daniella. Everything was how they had left it: Daniella’s blanket covering the button, martin guitar tossed to the side on the floor, drops of blood staining the white carpet. With a sigh Emily dialed  Shawn’s number and put it on speaker.
“Hey Em, you okay?” When Shawn’s voice met her ears Emily broke down and started crying.
“Baby what’s going on? Shawn questioned as he stood up in the dressing room getting dressed for tonight’s show.
“It’s Dani, Shawn.”
“Is she okay? What’s going on?”
“I thought she was playing with her toys still and I was doing the dishes and she just screamed Shawn. She was in your studio and she was laying on the floor with a guitar on top of her and there was blood and she just kept screaming.”
“What was she even doing in the studio? You and her both know you don’t need to go in there when I’m not at home.” Shawn snapped.
“What? Shawn why is that the first thing you ask. Your daughter was hurt and had to go to hospital and you only care about why she was in your studio?”
“Well she’s okay isn’t she?”
“She is now but that isn’t the point Shawn. Do you even care about what happened to her or wanna know how bad she was hurt?”
“I’m kind of busy at the moment, I’m about to go to a meet and greet. Can you just tell me if anything in my studio is broken?” Shawn asked with a blank look on his face.
“All the buttons are probably broken, looks like she spilled her drink on it and the guitar probably needs replacing or fixing.” Emily sounded defeated as she spoke; This wasn’t the same Shawn she had married or the one who vowed to never prioritize anything over his daughter. She comes first no matter what, is what he whispered at 2:48 am on the 2nd of may 4 years ago when he held her in his strong arms for the very first time.
“Fucks sake,” He cursed to himself quietly as he mentally counted how much it would cost to replace and how long it’d take, “She didn’t touch my journal did she?”
“Yeah she has. Spilt her drink on it too, it’s pretty much destroyed because it’s so wet.”
“I’ve got to go.”
And that was all she heard from him the rest of the evening. The next morning, Daniella climbed into Emily’s bed and cuddled up next to her.
“Can we call daddy? We didn’t talk to him last night.”
“Sure but then we’re going over to Grandma’s and Grandpa’s house on the train so we’ve got to get ready.” Emily decided planning a last minute trip to her parent’s house and to take Daniella out of nursery for the day. She facetimed Shawn and pulled her laptop up from the floor to book train tickets.
“Daddy, daddy, daddy.” Daniella sung softly as excitement coursed through her at the thought of talking to her father.
“Why isn’t he answering mummy?” Dani asked her mum with glazed eyes and pout.
“Maybe he’s just sleeping.”
Shawn didn’t ring them the rest of the day or the day after that one and Emily had had enough. She booked 2 plane tickets so they would meet Shawn in Vienna. They were only going for 2 days however because Daniella  needed to be back for her stitches to be removed the day after they return. Brian knew they were flying out and met them at the airport. After greetings and lots of jokes between Daniella and Brian in the car, the three of them were walking in through the backstage entrance of the arena.
“Daddy” Daniella  squealed excitedly when she saw him walking down the corridor on his phone.
“What are you doing here Dani?”
“We came to see you.” She replied frowning when he didn’t pick her up.
“Is daddy mad?” The question left the toddlers lips as her arms lowered when she realized he wasn’t going to pick her up.
“Daddy is mad, yes.”
“Why?”
“Because you went into my studio when you aren’t supposed to and broke my guitar, recording equipment, and notebook.”
“But I didn’t mean to”
Daniella ran back to her mum and cuddled her leg as she tried to hide from her dad’s bad mood. Brian smiled softly at Emily before taking Daniella’s hand and going to show Conner her big plaster on her head.
“What is going on with you? She is your daughter and you care more about your stupid replaceable music stuff, you can’t replace her Shawn. She didn’t mean to break your stuff but did you even stop to consider that she may have been in there to be closer to you?”
Shawn stood with his mouth gaping and guilt swimming in his eyes. Having his wife here and hearing her words just then were like a slap in the face.
“I’m sorry. I don’t know, I guess I just didn’t want to believe she got hurt and I wasn’t there and I know it isn’t an excuse but I’m so sorry.”
“You don’t even know how hard it’s been. You weren’t there to hear her scream over and over and not be able to help her or calm her down. You didn’t have to worry about if she was losing too much blood or if she was going to be okay.” Emily started crying as she looked at Shawn who bit his lip and pulled her into a hug, holding her close.
“I know I wasn’t there and I’m so sorry for how I acted after it.”
“I haven’t been able to sleep or send her to nursery since that day. I just hear her scream in my head every time I close my eyes and I’m terrified she’s going to get hurt and I won’t be there.”
“Baby you need to take care of you too. I’m gonna speak to Andrew and talk about postponing the next month of shows so I can come home and make this up to you.”
“It’s not just me you need to make it up to. She was so excited to see you again, wouldn’t stop talking about how she was going to tell you all about how brave she was at the hospital for at least an hour on the plane here. She needed you or to just at least talk to her after the accident Shawn.”
“I know, I’m going to make it up to her and you. I’m going to go find Andrew now so I can tell him I’m going home for a bit if you wanna come with?”
“Are you scared?” She teased him as they walked down the corridor to get the manager.
“Dani bear!” Shawn yelled excitedly as he ran up to her from behind and picked her up after he’d spoken to Andrew.
“Daddy! Tell Uncle Geoff he’s old” she giggled putting her arm round Shawn’s neck. Doing as the little girl demanded him to do, Shawn looked at Daniella with nothing but love and awe. The boys were about to begin soundcheck so Shawn placed his girl up on his shoulders.
“Okay so we’re doing-” Zubin began but Daniella stole the show and gasped loudly before bending her body so she was staring at Shawn upside down.
“Daddy I gotta tell you what happened”
“What happened pirate?”
“I went to the hospital and they gave me stitches and it’s like your song, remember it daddy?”
“You had stitches because you didn’t have my kisses?” He teased as he held her gently but firm to make sure she wasn’t going to fall off.
“No I got stitches cause I cut my head silly. But now  you’ve write a song about me.” she grinned.
“They’re all about you now baby.” Shawn said helping her sit back up straight and getting ready to soundcheck the first song.
“Daddy do you wanna a secret?” Daniella whispered into his ear.
“Of course” he whispered back.
“I  went into your studio cause I wanna be just like you.”
Shawn was left speechless; he could  have thousands and millions of fans that admired him but knowing his daughter admired and adored him meant a whole lot more.

Fall
Tumblr media
Music beginning to play directed the crowds attention from their conversations back to the ice rink. The parents and family and friends cheered loudly as they watched the 6 year old's skate out onto the ice. Whispers over how cute they all looked in their hockey gear: surnames written boldly on the back of their jerseys over their player number, helmet on to their once neatly tied hair, stick in hand as they lined up on their respective lines for the second time.
It was the beginning of the second period and Toronto’s under 7s team were winning 2-0 and Shawn and Olivia, his wife of 5 years, couldn’t be more proud of how well their baby girl had played. She’d scored the first goal and also assisted in the second goal.
“Papai, look.” Joshua, their two year old son, said hitting Shawn on the shoulder as he tried to show him the game he was playing on Olivia’s phone. He sat on Olivia’s lap as they watched the game. The crowd of parents there for Toronto’s team all stood up and roared praise at Daniella Mendes who scored another goal just a couple of minutes before the end of the second period.
Shawn’s grin beamed from ear to eat but slowly disappeared along with everyone else’s as they watched a player from the away team skate at a great speed with Daniella and her friend, Sophie  in their path. The two girls in white jerseys were unaware of this other player seeing as they were facing the other direction.
“Daniella, Sophie!” The yells sounded as they tried to prevent the girls from getting hurt on the ice. It’s ironic how people say kids hear everything but when kids actually need to listen all words fell deaf upon their ears. Despite knowing what was about to happen, the gasps from the parents in the stands echoed throughout the rink. Anticipation bubbled as tension built as they waited for the three girls to get back up.
Daniella had the worst of it as it appeared the other player skated straight into her back. She went face first to the ice and slid across the ice from the impact. Sophie also experienced something similar to Daniella’s glide across the ice except she didn’t go very far across the ice compared to her friend. Sophie was quick to stand back up and adjust her jersey so it hung properly; It was as if nothing had even happened with how quick she bounced back up. The other player was also quick to get back up. Unlike Daniella, both these girls and others on the teams had experienced falls and trips during practice and previous game.
“Papai.” Daniella cried as she lay on the ice in shock. Her team of 6 players and their coach was quick to surround her wanting to check she was okay when she hadn’t stood back up.
“Daniella are you okay?” Coach asked as she crouched down to help her sit up.
“Want Papai and mumma.” Daniella cried removing her helmet and mouth guard.
“I’ll go get Shawn and Olivia!” Charlotte, one of the players yelled as she heard her friends cries.
She didn’t have to go very far, however, seeing as Olivia and Shawn were already stepping onto the ice having heard their daughter’s cries. Joshua had been left with Sophie’s mum seeing as she had been sitting next to them. Thankfully, Daniella wasn’t too far away from the boards so it wasn’t much of a struggle for the parents to get to her.
“Hey, hey, you’re okay. I’ve got you Dani.” Shawn whispered into her ear as he scooped her up and pulled her into a hug. Tiny arms wrapped around his neck as tears dropped onto his pink hoodie.
“Are you hurt anywhere honey?” Olivia asked brushing her sweaty hair from her forehead as she pried Daniella away from Shawn’s  shoulder so they could talk to her better. The team had been sent to do shooting practice on the other end of the ice to give them some privacy.
“I don’t know Mumma”
“Daniella do you think you can continue playing or do you wanna sit out for the rest of the game?” Coach asked seeing as they had to get the game going again quickly.
“I wanna sit with daddy”
“Are you sure honey? You were playing so well”
“I was?”
“Of course you were. You scored a goal Dani-bear, that’s amazing. You looked super super cool out there on the ice. Are you sure you wanna stop playing?”
“What if I fall again?” She whispered and the parents knew why she truly didn’t want to go on the ice: she didn’t know if she’d fall down again.
“Listen you’re always going to fall over sometimes, even daddy falls down on the floor doesn’t he?” Olivia said causing Daniella to nod and giggle.
“And your on ice so it means it’s a lot slippier and you’ve gone over a year and this was your first big fall wasn’t it? If you ask me that’s really impressive” shawn said trying to get her back into playing not wanting this one fall to ruin her love for the sport.
“Mhm” the girl nodded as she looked at the rest of her team.
“So you’re always gonna have some falls on the ice yeah? But that’s why you have to wear all your gear to stop you getting hurt, your not hurt right now after the fall are you?”
“No”
“So are you feeling like you can go back out there and play?” Coach asked as she stood near listening to the conversation in awe of how strong the bonds were between Daniella and her parents.
“Okay” she nodded looking at her dad. Shawn wore a proud smile on his face as he admired his little girl before pulling her helmet on and holding her stick up to her as she stood up. The two parents made their way off the ice back to their seats where Joshua jumped into Olivia’s lap.
Resuming the game shortly, it wasn’t long before Daniella had the puck and she skating straight for the goal. The stands filled with cheers once again as the scoreboard lit up showing a new number. 3-0 to the U7s Toronto team. The referee blew his whistle not even a minute later causing the rink to echo the parents claps and cheers as the girls skated to the middle. Daniella pulled her helmet off and went over to the boards and waved at her family. Shawn just knew that no matter how many times she’d fall on the ice she had a natural talent for ice hockey and believed nothing could ever stop her from being on the ice.
