The way their relationships fell apart and they scattered to the winds because they didn’t have Kim Dokja, the one person tying them all together. Han Sooyoung struggling to write again knowing that KDJ will never read her story. Yoo Joonghyuk unable to go on, unsure how to live normally after surviving 1864 regression turns and missing the one person who he believes can answer that question. Jung Heewon and Lee Hyunsung’s relationship falling apart because of the ghosts of the past haunting them.

This line in particular broke me: <Kim Dokja's Company> had been disbanded. How could the company go on without its namesake, after all?

thinking about the spectre of kim dokja hovering over all of kimcom now. god their relationships during the epilogue are so heartbreaking to think about. they all have matching scars from the sword kim dokja saved them with whilst they were drowning. they all loved him so much and he's not here anymore. it's not any of their faults, really, but its hard not to hate yourself for it when you learnt so much about hating yourself from him. who else in the world can understand the mark this man left on them. who else in the world loves him like they do. how can they love each other when there will always be that missing space where he should be. how guilty they must feel when they do anyway. every time they get together, the thought hanging over their heads of 'this is what he sacrificed himself for'. how do you tolerate that.

yall ever think about how ways of survival also saved han sooyoung. the whole point of its creation was definitely to save kim dokja and i think he relied on it more but the dreams han sooyoung got about ways of survival did inspire her to write sssss infinite regresser, which is how she made a living, began her career as a writer, and escaped relying on her shitty neglectful parents. and then when the apocalypse came, it was knowledge she got from her novel and the authors attribute she got from writing it that kept her alive, at least in the beginning. its not certain she would have died without it the same way it is for kim dokja but it did help her survive at least a little bit. kim dokja wasn't the only one who relied on yoo jonghyuk's story......

Spoilers for ORV epilogue (finally finished reading!!):

I finished reading last night and literally could not function for a solid couple hours after. It’s so good but so bittersweet that it hurt. I love the openness of the ending, that we don’t get to witness directly what’s behind the door but it’s implied. It reflects the story Han Sooyoung wrote with an incomplete ending, and leaves the reader to imagine their desired end to the story. The reader, after all, is the one who holds the power to bring Kim Dokja back.

This whole ending passage is just so well written and finishes the novel on such a strong note:

|||There are three ways to survive in a ruined world.|||

I|| l've forgotten a few by now. However, one thing's for certain. ||I

Han Sooyoung's trembling hand grasped the door's handle.

She was scared. What if there was nothing beyond this door?

What if all this was nothing more than a sweet lie?

She looked to her side, and saw Yoo Joonghyuk nodding his head.

|||And that is, the you reading these words will get to survive.|||

No matter what was waiting for them beyond this door, they were now ready to witness it. The door creaked noisily as it opened. Faint rays of sunlight entered through the wide-open window. The pages of the manuscript she spent the whole night revising scattered around in the wind. Letters scattered in a blinding fashion. The story she didn't get to complete, it was right there.

The sentences she really wanted to write sometime, even if it was not now. While thinking about those sentences, Han Sooyoung grinned like an idiot.
