maybe reading too much into this but magdalene as foil for bruce's inner voice [that he couldn't divulge because we as the audience are only privy to selina's pov] (going by 80s bruce characterization). the conflict between selina and magdalene is essentially the one mirrored in bruce's idealism that anyone could be helped and selina's cynicism that gotham is and will always be a dog-eat-dog world. no one helps those who doesn't help themselves.

in this way selina as catwoman never wanted to be a hero, she never dons the costume for "the greater good" or to help an amorphous gotham citizen who she doesn't know. it was always to protect herself and those she loves (holly and magdalene)

ohhh finished batman: ego,,, oh many Thoughts (these might not be correct at all; it’s all for fun <3)

batman and gotham, locked in an eternal cycle of mutually assured destruction. batman as a creature awoken due to violence, one that gotham provides, and also batman wielding violence to try and control gotham. the minotaur is hungry, though, it requires a sacrifice every harvest season. the minotaur perhaps isn’t the man behind the cowl, bruce wayne, it’s the batman mythos, the cowl itself. the ego. what do you use to feed it?

the cliched argument of “bruce wayne is the mask/batman is the mask” is dismissed out of hand. both exist with in the same person. i know this is the representation of bruce’s rage and bloodthirst but i can’t help but think about dark knight dark city again,, how batman could very much be a representation of gotham. of the cycle, of the maze. the abyss, if you will. how to do make sure you don’t get lost in it? that you don’t jump? how do you skirt the line of vigilante and criminal every day and fight for hope and not jump off the metaphorical ledge? to take the easy way out? to get blood, to become the role expected of you.

again, the theme of bruce being a creature of violence and gotham being the context for batman’s creation and batman’s cage

a lot of discussion of Fate. there always needed to be a batman, a signifier to gotham’s signified. batman must play a part in the daily toil of this city but does he actually provide change? is he sisyphus?

literally conversation with the ego is a conversation with the soul of gotham… bruce contemplating whether his work amounts to anything and dismisses killing out of hand when batman suggests it. absurdity of not wielding a weapon that your adversaries all carry with ease.

but this is work worth doing. a sisyphus playing by his own rules, hoping that today might be the day where he stops the labyrinth from breeding more violence, continuing the work while not looking down. the work saves people, it might not save every single one, it might never be enough, but it matters. you do not get to commit philosophical suicide. or real suicide. the great work begins!
