stars
Like a map of paths unrevealed, they stretch into infinity above my head. I wish it wasn't getting colder so fast; I would lie out here all night and follow the stars with my mind, seeing where they could lead me and how their stories can fill me with so much pleasure until my heart just stretches towards its limits and sends my legs the itching commands to follow its lead. What a beautiful night. My pipe's smoke rises up into the sky and gets blown away in the direction of two especially bright stars that tug my heart's strings with a soft but certain force. I feel that this is the direction I should be going, soon.

far
If I have seemed to be absent-minded these days, forgive me. There is so much noise in this world right now, I can't seem to focus on a single place, everything seems to demand my attention...

Snufkin, hey Snufkin! I'm glad I caught you before you went off on one of your... "journeys" as you call them. Say, have you seen where Sniff's off to? I lent him my magnifier and I haven't heard from him in days. Really, people these days, give them a finger and they take the whole hand!
Hello my dear Hemulen! I must admit I still have to prepare my journey at least a bit, although there's not much to pack; but I really want to say a proper farewell this time, I can't leave my friends this sudden and sad again, I guess. But about Sniff, I don't know, he's probably hiding in the Moominhouse from the cold weather. I'm sure you don't have to worry about your magnifier, though; he won't have broken it, he's far too eager about possessions. Which is a bit vain, if you ask me; I wouldn't worry about material too much, it only makes you unhappy. There is much more happiness to be found even if you have just your eyes, ears and nose left and everything else taken away; who cares, as long as you are still able to see, hear or smell the beauty of the world.

the arrival of autumn
There has never been any smell more desirable than the first faint hints of rustling leaves on a ground as you step on them and feel their sacrifice beneath your feet. It is always the first touch that makes my heart yearn for the world around us, adventurous and free. I feel that the time is near. Dreaded by my friends in this beautiful valley, but essential for my own life. The time to travel again, the time to discover parts of this world that haven't yet been found.
I pick up the small brown leaf I crushed between my feet and the grass, still damp from dew. The smell fills my nostrils and goes right to my heart and sings me a story of forgotten lands, hidden valleys and deep forests that only the wind knows about. They sing for me, and they call me to be with them. The time has come.
