My thoughts on BP Lance

Would I completely adore seeing Lance become the Black Paladin? Yes.

Does Lance deserve recognition/an epic leadership arc? Definitely.

Would being the Black Paladin be something that Lance could be really good at and a position he’s totally qualified for, with maybe just a little more growth? Absolutely. 

Do I think Lance is going to become the Black Paladin on the show?

No. I think it’s pretty unlikely that Lance will actually become bp, even though I would love to see it happen and he would be great at it, not to mention it being an excellent way of showing his growth and having the team realize how far he’s come/how important he is/how he holds the team together. But I don’t think they’re going to give him this arc.

But worry not! Lance will still continue to grow naturally and probably have a beautiful leadership arc… just not one that ends with him being the Black Paladin.

That’s what I think, at least… :D

EDIT: Gonna be honest guys, this was before season 5, and it seems a lot more likely now… still not gonna expect it but season 5 has given me a lot of hope

I’m just… continuously blown away by Lance’s emotional maturity. 

Like, in seconds he goes from talking about his issues with (clone) Shiro to defending him and reassuring Allura that she can still work with him. His empathy is gorgeous. I feel like he has such a healthy grasp on his own emotions, this intuitive understanding that “okay, I’m feeling this way right now and that’s valid, but my personal feelings shouldn’t color my judgement.” It would have been so easy for him to go “oh yeah Shiro’s totally being a jerk rn,” but instead he automatically tries to see things from Shiro’s perspective and speak on his behalf. 

He’s just so understanding, and good, and just. Wow.

When the black lion originally opens up to Lance, his self doubt originally keeps him reluctant to take up the position as black paladin, but as soon as the team is in an emergency and needs him, he’s all for it

Lance puts on the black paladin armor for the first time and Keith walks directly into a wall

Keith: Lance is annoying but I lowkey want to demolish him in that armor 

Hunk: I know I said I support your crush on Lance but what the fuck

Now that Lance is the leader he pushes himself even harder and more frequently trains. Keith lets him know he should take breaks but he’s also 👀 at getting to train with Lance

Occasionally Lance makes mistakes but his team is understanding. Lance encourages his team to call him out on any mistakes he makes and is willing to admit when he’s wrong.

Lance: alright so Keith is gonna cover me and Pidge in Red while we hack into this Galra ship Hunk: the yellow lion has the best defenses, I think I should cover you guys Lance: hmm, you’re right, good call buddy

Lance winked at Keith one time after training and Keith was so flustered he ripped his own shirt right off

Keith, sighing: Lance is so goddamn gorgeous I have never seen another boy as beautiful as him Pidge, looking at Lance half dressed in his armor and inhaling lucky charms: hmm

Lance tends to blame himself if anything goes wrong during a mission and beats himself up over it in private ( his friends reassure him he’s doing his best )

Diplomatic aliens visiting the castle: Pardon me, where is your black paladin? We’ve heard endless tales of his courage in battle, and we would love to meet him Allura: [opens the door to reveal Lance having a contest with Hunk over who can fight more marshmallows in their mouths]

Keith and Lance constantly fight side by side during battle, not even having to look at each other to know what the other is thinking

Galra commander: where your supposedly fearless leader, I challenge him to battle Lance, making pew pew noises while he shoots down sentries: oh geez that’s me 

Keith is always disgustingly obvious about his crush on Lance but its cranked up to 11 now that Lance is leader but Lance still remains oblivious and Hunk/Pidge are disgusted by all this obvious pining

Lance: hey samurai, nice work out there today Keith, beet red in the face: @ god what the fuck did I do to deserve this

Keith is Lance’s unofficial right hand man and helps him out with every important decision. He’s the first person Lance turns to if he needs help. If Lance is flustered and stressed under the pressure of leadership, Keith is there to reassure him. Co leadership Klance essentially

One time a Galra soldier knocked Keith over and Lance took them out and offered Keith a helping hand and Keith basically melted on the spot

Lance, sweaty after battle and his hair messed up, holding out a hand: You okay, Keith? Keith: just….. just leave me here

Keith stares at Lance during battle. A lot. Pidge ( playfully )smacks him every time she catches him.

Lance: for my first trick as black paladin, every time we form voltron we all have to blare the ghostbusters theme song in our lions Hunk: knew there was a reason the black lion picked you

Whenever Lance gets his Serious Leader expression on to give out orders Keith hides his face in his shirt

Lance: Keith, I need you to take out those five guards and get into the control room, okay? Keith, not hearing a word of what he said: marry me please

Keith is banned from Allura’s, Pidge’s, and Hunk’s bedrooms because he went in there to loudly complain about how how Lance is until they all kicked him out

Lance is a very talented diplomat but has zero tolerance for Lotor

Lance: you want some breath mints prince lotion? Lotor; uh, why? Lance: ‘cos all that’s coming out of your mouth is shit

Pidge and Hunk squatting behind Lance: OOOOHHHHHHH-

The black bayard turns into duel pistols for Lance and he shows off constantly by spinning them on his fingers

Allura: Lance, you cannot make it a rule that Keith has to give you a good luck kiss before every battle Lance, playing a saxophone: nobody tells the president what to do

Lance, the courageous and skilled black paladin, jack of all trades, stays up until 3 am watching older western movies with Keith so he can totally rip off some cool moves to do with his bayard 

Lance, sitting in the black lion’s cockpit: today while Keith was training he pulled his shirt up and I saw his abs and I truly do believe there is a god Black: oh worm? :)))

After learning klance has crushes on each other the black lion plays matchmaker and will nudge Lance towards Keith after a battle with her paw to encourage them to talk

Black looping her tail around them: whoops guess you’re stuck until I move, isn’t this a great opportunity to bond? :) 

Lance goes to casually flirt with Keith and he can hear Black speaking in his mind and encouragingly nodding like “go get ‘im, boy”

The team are amazed with Lance’s ability to calmly and effectively deal with rude alien leaders/diplomats but as soon as the alien turns around Lance looks at the team like “Get-A-Load of this guy”

Lance has an amazing knack for switching from Badass Brave Leader to making horrible puns and goofing off with his team whenever it’s appropriate
