The weirdest guy I ever met in a church was this boy who referred to “Buzz Aldrin and his husband” going to the moon. I was completely baffled, and when I asked if he’d misspoken, he got really angry and accused me of being deliberately ignorant of the facts. It turned out that he was somehow comvinced that Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong were married. It took five Wikipedia articles to convince him otherwise.

The novelist writes from inside. I’m rather sensitive on this point, because I write science fiction, or fantasy, or about imaginary countries, mostly—stuff that, by definition, involves times, places, events that I could not possibly experience in my own life. So when I was young and would submit one of these things about space voyages to Orion or dragons or something, I was told, at extremely regular intervals, “You should try to write about things you know about.” And I would say, But I do; I know about Orion, and dragons, and imaginary countries. I've seen a meme or two about Stelle fighting/almost dying to get the attention of the other two Aeons, but Xipe goes "cool hat" or something.

It's funny, but the hat is way more than a hat!

It's something that has passed from one Nameless to another (twice!), like influence and hope being handed down between generations. She learns about what came before, how others addressed their circumstances, and decides how she wants to proceed. And while she "borrows/collects" pieces from others, she finds the places they fit in her puzzle. (Perhaps threads and tapestry might be more fitting an image here, but Xipe's puzzle motif is so pretty???)

Also, battles are cool and all, but there's something so moving about the quiet struggles. The moments where the world sits heavy, where we question tomorrow and if we make it there, but finding even the smallest reason to hold on.

It's also the smallest acts that can linger and do good, even if they seem inconsequential, trivial, and/or meaningless. (See the "run into fire to save people but won't help mom with dishes" story about heroes.)

Uh, OP, sorry for going on. 😅 I really liked how Dan Heng and Jing Yuan appeared in the illusion, and you got me thinking. 🙏

So, that dream sequence after the first "fight" with Sunday. Robin managed to awaken from it on her own because she saw her brother unwilling to cage the bird in that childhood memory, something that she could never fool herself into believing it happened.

Leaving the sheer sadness of it aside, I wonder about the Trailblazer's dream. They couldn't wake up until they realized the contradiction with Misha, so up until then, they could believe everything that happened in that dream or, at the very least, they wanted to believe it.

And this is really interesting to me, because that means everyone in that dream is how Stelle sees them. The ones that caught my attention the most were Jing Yuan and Dan Heng: Stelle sees Jing Yuan as a good-natured, fun man that humors her jokes and Dan Heng as her soft, kind friend.

And dunno, but that kind of fucked me up in an unexpected way! What do you mean she looks at these two men burdened by tragedy and shackled by their pasts and sees beyond the tragedy? What do you mean Stelle has such unabashedly good versions of Jing Yuan and Dan Heng in mind? I think they'd need a second to process this if they ever saw Stelle's dream sequence because I sure as hell did!
