BLIND-DATE SIGN-UPS

Bolstered by the success with her Secret Santa project over the winter holidays, Victoria Wolfgang has devised a new plan to bring the locals closer than ever - and she has made an announcement to the town about her new idea. 

Valentine’s Day is a day for romance, and while no one has ever accused Victoria Wolfgang of being a romantic in any form, she is here to challenge their thinking. A new sign-up sheet has been posted in the Port Vale City Centre for blind date match-ups. She will provide all who signs up with a match and a date location - Ms. Wolfgang, a professional cupid. 

In the past, Port Vale has never paid much attention to Valentine’s Day - but rumor has it, this is not Victoria’s only surprise kept hidden in her sleeve. A line has appeared by the sign-up sheet, with everyone whispering about what else their city counsel president might have in store... 

All dates pairs will be chosen randomly, including the location of the date. 

All Blind Date threads must take place in-game on February 14th; leading up to the evening event (details coming soon).

Getting matched for a date does not imply a ship must take place. You can make it a platonic connection, if preferred, or roll with whatever plot is currently going for the matched characters. Please be respectful of others and their ideas while plotting out the dynamic for your date. 

Please only sign-up for a Blind Date thread to be assigned to your character if you can commit to responding to the thread in a timely manner. You are encouraged to prioritize your Blind Date thread to get as much accomplished as possible before (or around) the 14th. 

Blind Date Threads may continue into the event - just please be sure to plot out a vague conclusion, so your interactions at the Valentine’s Day event (details tba) will make sense! ASSYRIA CHRONICLES - 001 

1. 21. 2022.

I’m back! You may not have missed me (or noticed I was gone), but I have definitely missed you. So much so, that I have brought back all sorts of valuable updates, reports, information, and secrets from Assyria to share with you all. Please keep in mind; this is all just the chatter in the sea, but I’ve made sure to validate each report personally. Let’s just dive right in, shall we? 

A pod of seals brought gifts to the Coral Sea; an abundance of fish & other seafood treats from faraway lands, beautifully adorned armor and delicate trinkets, as well as a mysterious locked box without a key. It is seemingly impossible to open no matter how hard it is smashed into rocks. Since receiving these gifts, any sirens within the Coral Sea saw immediate with health, if they had been previously been feeling under the weather. 

In sadder news, the first of Assyrian royalty has gotten sick, though it seems to be a mild case - Isla Marin is showing symptoms of the illness, and has been highly advised to stay out of the water, at all costs. More information has come to light on the sickness itself, showing that the sick sirens and mermaids seem to improve when in human form, and worsen when in their natural form. The sick mermaids have began to see dark spots in their gemstones/pearls and nightmares have began to be reported among the ill, as well.

Some believe these dreams have something to do with the ever-growing threat of darkness terrorizing the Assyrian realms... but you didn’t hear that from me!

An interesting new plant has began to grow in the areas of the Antarctic and Artic kingdoms, where icebergs have melted and the water has been changing. Mermaids from each kingdom are bringing the foliage to their respective Princesses; and they hope their rulers can learn more for them here in town. 

In the Indian Ocean, 3 sirens from the Caribbean Sea went missing - they were passing through, according to the reports from mermaids on guard, and when seen, swam away quickly and seemingly just disappeared. More reports of an odd, moving darkness in the outer edge of the Indian Ocean, where the Caribbean sirens were last sighted, have been rumored. A warning has been issued for everyone to stay together and stay diligent. The mermaids who were patrolling that area have all fallen ill, black specs in their pearls. Many have taken to land to recover.

A lot of the Caribbean Sea sirens are suspicious of the Indian Ocean mermaids...  if you ask me, they aren’t too sure about the ‘disappearance’ theory. 

One of the outer boroughs of the North Pacific kingdom had a minor disaster; it was brushed by the elusive darkness, killing any vegetation in it’s path, and the mermaids who lived there have had to move closer to the sea capitol for food, as the fish have became scarce in the place where the darkness hovered. Mermaids in the royal court are growing restless and uneasy in the absence of their princess.

A small number of Black Sea sirens have left their territory and have been traveling across land towards the Baltic Sea; Unclaimed territory that has loose ownership to the North Atlantic, but is not currently guarded. Though officially proclaimed as merely an exploration mission, rumors are that the Black Sea sirens hope to establish a new territory separate from the Black Sea. 

I overheard two South Pacific mermaids saying that maybe they have the right idea to flee and start their own thing. Could it be true that even mermaids are beginning to doubt the monarchy?

PLOT DROP 003 - A PORT VALE WINTER 

For many of the locals, once the festivities of Halloween ended, it was time to begin the preparations for the colder months - Port Vale is no stranger to snow, and though the ocean never manages to freeze over, ice and chilly winds are only of a few threats they must face as a community as the holidays draw near. The last half of December always promises a small burst of tourism, the crazy adventuring types who get out for winter break or crave a small-town setting to huddle down with their hot cocoa and projects. For those who call Port Vale home?… the peaceful falling snow overnight is far from what their lives look like behind closed doors. 

Though the unsuspecting locals were able to finally relax with Xander Blackmore’s wedding to Siobhan Waters delayed, there were more than a few souls finding plenty of other things to worry about. Word had begun to spread, slowly at first, of Siobhan’s true nature - a selkie, alleged to not be in town alone, and many feared her intentions. However, despite the shocking revelations of October, Port Vale had entered the sleepy spell that the winter months always promise. Of course, it doesn’t last long… 

ANOTHER NEW FACE ARRIVES IN TOWN

It was Thomas O’Cuilinn who the first to get the opportunity to see her - Scylla had come to shore, looking perfectly human. Her first stop? The Mermaid Museum. She may have managed to spend the entirety of her visit undetected by him; but her own surprise was what gave her away. Upon seeing Thomas, Scylla’s fingers went slack, and released their grip on an artifact she’d been inspecting closely. It fell with a crash and shattered, a priceless treasure from the depths of a shipwreck gone in a flash. “You… came back? You’re- alive?” The woman gasped out, looking almost as if she would reach out and touch him… but instead, uttered a promise to repay the cost of damages, and all but fled the building. 

Seeing the hippocampi had done nothing but inspire Scylla more to investigate this town, so different from how she remembered it - the lighthouse, still standing strong as ever, though it was obvious it had faced many a storm in the centuries that had passed. It was that; the beacon of the town, that had drawn her from the sea, and it wasn’t until later when she was safely settled in Soren Nader and Wren Salmon’s apartment, joined by Siobhan and Aylin Topal, that Scylla was able to put her next plan into motion. 

“I have a great interest in the North Star, the lighthouse,” She explained to the small group of them; those she considered her closest allies here, those of her creations which she felt she could trust. Not all of the selkies had taken as well to her gift than others; so to them, she entrusted this task. “I want to know who owns it, who owned it before them, I want to have a detailed history of the repairs, especially. I need to know… everything about it. That Moray man, I need that information, too.” 

To this, Siobhan was visibly uncomfortable, eyes darting down low, and offering nothing more than a nod - strange behavior, but they knew better than to question her with Scylla around. She promised to return in the new year, with others like them - with more tasks, too, most likely, and Scylla would be expecting reports on the mermaids, sirens, and now… the North Star Lighthouse. As she left, the woman began to lose her strength; faltering, and falling to the snowy ground. It was evening, and the shore was still quite far, so she called out to the single lone person on the street with her - hoping to catch the attention of Gemma Walker. “You! You Coral Sea girl, assist me,” Scylla demanded, reaching out with a shaky hand to be assisted to the beach. If Gemma were to ask questions, they were waved off - the siren was given only the name, Scylla, and once more; a promise of her return. She stressed that she had little time, and a return to the water was essential, but once she reached the water, it was not a tail that appeared. 

INSTEAD…. SCYLLA DISAPPEARED BELOW THE WAVES WITH NO TRACE.

A couple of days pass, and more concerning news wafts through the town’s streets; somehow able to keep ahold of secrets, yet at the same time, managing to spill them all over. Reports of illness in the sea were more frequent now, and some facts were beginning to emerge. The mermaids were suffering the most, but exposure to land seemed to help symptoms. In town, Ridley Alara and Allegra Weaving had become sick, though it was hard to tell if it was a common winter cold or the mysterious illness of Assyria - both were unwell, and showing severe cold symptoms. 

But they were not the only sirens to be up late worrying; Elistra Smith had an interesting dream the same night that Scylla was in town, though she was oblivious at the time to her presence. In the dream, there was a voice - she spoke comfortingly, in the dream, just a vague figure in the water with Elistra, in her siren form. It was calm in the sea, but dark - thick, almost, but the figure continued speaking. Elistra. I’m sorry you did not find a home here, in what I created for you all. There was a terrible mistake, and the reckoning for it is upon us all now. Even you. You may hide behind your legs, but you are seen, and you are very much needed. I have not yet faded, not entirely. Do not lose faith. If anything else, do not lose that, for I exist, and I am coming. 

Perhaps it could have been only that; a dream, and nothing more, but when Elistra awoke the next morning, her hair was wet, dripping onto her pillow, and she smelled exactly of the sea. There were kelp bits matted into her hair, and that morning, the seas were gentle and calm against the surf, as if an echo of the words spoken in the dead of night. 

IN A TOWN OF MERMAIDS, A SIGHTING OCCURS

Something about the wintertime in Port Vale inspired the imagination; if you were to study, really study, the legends and lore that created the town, you’d see a major uptick in alleged mermaid sightings, or otherwise odd occurrences, in these chilly months. For Tiago Nussbaum, it was entirely a product of wrong place, right time; a late night walk, an odd hum from the beach, and an overly curious mind brought him to the shores in the darkness. He was there; he saw it happen, the way Gemma helped Scylla into the sea; how the fragile woman had never resurfaced. At first, you could assume murder had conspired, but that wasn’t all that went noticed under his gaze - but instead, two sirens arriving to the shore, dragging themselves from the water and losing their tail before ducking off to a meeting place to speak of reports back home. Among the locals that the sirens met, Tiago knew he recognized a face somewhere in the mix - but who would believe his stories, if he was able to share them? A town where mermaid sightings are as spoken of as stray cats, but very little taken seriously… 

WINTER WAS UPON PORT VALE. AND SECRETS NEVER TAKE WELL TO THE COLD; AS HEARTS WARM, LIPS LOOSEN, AND THE CRASH OF WAVES AGAINST ROCK PROMISE THAT THE HOLIDAYS WILL BRING PLENTY MORE THAN GOOD CHEER AND JOY FOR ALL.

PLOT DROP 002 - The Mayor Finds Love! ...PART 2 / conclusion

HAUNTS ON THE HARBOR IS IN FULL SWING...

All of Port Vale gathered down at the harbor, adorned in costume both sweet and scary alike, to enjoy the annual party in the spirit of haunting. This year, there was a suspenseful energy to the crowd of partiers, spending the day anticipated the strange wedding that would be taking place that evening. The Mayor had only announced his engagement a week prior, and the bride in question was still largely a mystery to all. Many saw the Halloween party as a chance to - hopefully - get some quality time with Siobhan Waters, but it was Gabi Drake who got the strangest opportunity. Wrong place, right time; Siobhan was in a hurry leaving the party just an hour before the wedding was to take place, leaving the contest stage, and she crashed into Gabi, dropping her purse into the sand, and it’s contents spilling out. The siren captain had only a couple of seconds before the bride quickly shoved it all back inside, but it was enough to notice the glint of a green emerald... undeniably Atla’s pendant that had been ‘reclaimed’ by the sea, so said the rumors among Assyrians. Xander Blackmore appeared before anything could be said, and the happy couple carried on their way in a hurry.

At the Mermaid Statue, the Wedding Guests Wait for the Ceremony to Begin...

... but they stand there anxiously for a long time. 9pm, the scheduled time, came and passed, and as it began to hit the 45 minute mark after the hour, Victoria Wolfgang appeared at the end of the aisle where Siobhan was meant to make her wedding march. She stands for a moment as all eyes turn on her, allowing the curiosity to peak, before finally addressing them. “The wedding has been cancelled...” The city council president spoke, a ghost of a smirk on her face and arms crossed. “...and rescheduled for next spring. It would seem our mayor has had a moment of clarity, and our happy couple decides it would be best to wait.” 

Chatter amongst the locals immediately bursts out, a quiet roar of whispers and questions. Clearing her throat loudly, Victoria indicated she had more to say. After instructing the guests to return to the festivities of the Halloween Party and carry-on with their evening, she also suggested giving Xander and Siobhan some privacy in this “difficult time”, and to put no more thought to the cancellation. But as the crowd dispersed slowly, keen to mingle and gossip, Victoria approached Elistra Smith, and held her back for a moment to talk privately. With a fair bit of forced concern, the city council president asks Elistra to try and talk with Xander Blackmore, try to get him to open up about his bride and what seemed to be his cold feet. She suggests to even enlist Cecil in the attempt, explaining to Elistra further that she has seen strange behavior from Xander lately, and she thinks something is amiss. “I have already put the bug in Mr. Blackmore’s ear that a trip to the chapel would be good for his spirits, so please be expecting him, Ms. Smith.”

But for Assyria, There are Other Concerns to Deal with...

Gemma Walker had been hanging back from the crowd by the beach, when a siren from her own Coral Sea caught her attention. She had come with a message for the captain, and not a good one - a strange sickness had affecting a small number of her sirens back home, but it wasn’t just them. Rumors of both sirens & mermaids alike falling ill had been whispered across Assyria, and the Coral Sea sirens felt it was important to pass on the warning; and also to advise to avoid the water at all costs. Valentina Romanova also received a similar message from her own sirens. 

Back in the town, Ridley Alara and Emilia Acosta were back at the deserted stage of the mermaid costume contest, hoping to change into something more comfortable for the rest of the evening after the wedding failure. As they slipped into something more comfortable, Victoria Wolfgang’s voice could be heard from the other side of the curtain. She was in hushed conversation with someone unknown, and maybe they shouldn’t have paused and listened, but they did... “This town is becoming a joke,” Victoria could be heard saying, frustration undeniable in her tone. “The mermaids have become a mockery of everything we are, everything we have built. And it’s that Xander’s fault, encouraging it all. I know things he doesn’t... about this place. He will take us right down into the Earth.”

To the girls surprise, it was Siobhan’s voice who responded - “You’re wrong! If we could just tell him...” But Victoria cut her off with a scoff, and continued on her own rant about it. 

“Time is of the essence here. I was willing to see what could be done, but now I’m not. Today has been nothing short of disaster, and since you won’t tell me the truth, I will find it on my own. I already have many on my side, and once my campaign is finished, I will be pushing the town to reconsider their choice of mayor. It should be me. Even you can’t disagree.”

The Night Continued On Until Late into the Early Morning Hours...

As the crowd on the harbor slowly thinned until only a few dedicated locals remained, Renzie Anand began the process of clean-up, deciding to start down at the beach where the game booths have been taken down, and trash and candy now littered the sand. His watch read somewhere around 3am, and though he was tired, he headed down the beach to work his way back up to the town, trash bag in hand. It took a few moments for him to realize he was not alone - but the sound of muffled voices brought his attention to a small, private dock extending into the water where two figures stood. At first, Renzie planned to mind his own business, but upon realizing that Siobhan Waters was one of the figures, he decided to creep closer. Though unable to hear their hushed tone, it was close enough to determine the other woman with the mayor’s fiancé was unknown to him. In the foreign woman’s hand was a large fur coat, thick and appearing heavy. 

Renzie stepped closer yet, curiosity beating out morality, and was able to pick up just enough to hear Siobhan say - “I’ll come back with the others soon. Thank you.”

The other woman handed the coat to Siobhan after some discussion, and the woman all but disappeared into the excessive furry folds, wrapping it around her body and then - to his surprise, leapt from the end of the small dock and into the water. In the ripples where her head should appear, instead there was a harbor seal popping up for air, it’s sleek coat the exact same mottled gray & black as the coat that Siobhan had put on. The seal looked back to the dock, and the unknown woman, before diving under once more and heading out into the sea. Just as Renzie was about to react, the woman on the dock turned around, looking directly at him, and put a finger to her lips in a shush motion, donning a smile. Then, she too, leapt from the edge and into the sea - but did not resurface, not as herself or any other creature. The water simply stilled in the darkness.

The results from the Mermaid Costume Contest are in - and I think they’ll totally blow your minds! We had six beautiful participants; Charlotte Wolfgang, Ridley Alara, Renzie Anand, Stephanie Anand, Emilia Acosta, and our mayor’s own fiancé, Siobhan Waters! Who were our winners? Well, after not one, not two, but three recounts (ordered by our city council pres. Victoria Wolfgang), the votes have been officially tallied. 

But first, a big big round of applause to everyone who competed this year! You all did beautifully and I think, personally, each and every one of you is winner! Unfortunately, we only have so many prizes to give, so the winners are as follows!

1st Place Prize - 2 VIP passes for an exclusive sneak-peek tour of new Mermaid Museum exhibit before it opens, given by Mellora Atoll the curator herself, who was also the creative director behind the project. The exhibit focuses on the local artists of Port Vale & the celebration of their town in gallery format. A complimentary copy of a book written by a local author detailing their theories of possible mermaid involvement with the Titanic is included. Our winner for this prize is @renzieanand!

2nd Place Prize - A voucher for 2 guests at the local winery just outside of town.
