Ok, I wanna play too.
(Let us ignore that it cut on the least opportune part of the song)
Of course, the guy obsessed with Talking Heads chooses a TH song. the crowd gasps.
ANYWAY, below cut there's a lengthy explanation as to why I think the second-best song on the Naked album applies perfectly to functionalism and the rise of the Decepticon movement. Mostly informed by "Megatron Origins"
First off, upon just hearing the first verses, you can tell this is a song from the perspective of the working class, not only that, but this is an angry song, a song of distaste and venom against powerful elites - and isn't that what the early Decepticon movement preached about? rebellion against a system.
The dark descent of the song could very well be linked to the fall of grace and the loss of principle the Decepticon movement as a whole went through. The rising disgruntlement in David Byrne's voice cuts like a knife and fits so well.
Now, let us examine and link the lyrics thematically to the rise of the Decepticon movement - some of this may be just an obvious observation on my part, but I feel the need to overexplain my point.
The first two verses of the song paint a picture of the low caste's daily "life". This is done mostly by monotonously repeating "work"
"Work, work, work, work
Work till holes are filled
Work, work, work, work
Bags of bone and skin"
After the initial build-up, there's a break, an objection, that could be filtered through the lens of "Why does an alt-mode, something you have no control over, inform who you will be in society for the rest of your living days?"
"But their skin is the same as yours
Coming in for the world to see
They can sit at the table, too
The same blood as you and me"
The next verse HAS to be linked not only to Terminus, but the substitution of miners that incurs the first revolt. This verse reflects on the imposed nature of low caste mechs, how they are merely cogs in a big machine and as such, can be replaced when broken or obsolete.
"Work, work,work
Till his life is done
The old man is at our door
And he's knocking...knocking
As his neighbors weep
Each day repeats
Are we nothing in your eyes?
Someone answer, someone answer [...]"
Right in the middle of the last verse is when the anger is at a boiling point, the vocals do a complete 180, and the tone of the song shifts- signifying that no they will not endure this anymore. (Sounding more appalled at the reality than actually infuriated.)
"This rusted garden gate
Can barely even stand
Their work is over now
And rest will be at hand"
The song ends on a melancholic note, using the "cool water" to symbolize the pressure coming down - this can be linked to the change in Megatron - from poet to gladiator (not dictator, not yet.).
"Is their skin not the same as yours?
Can they sit at the table to drink
Cool water
Cool water
And his lungs are filled with rain...
And the water's rushing in..."
Of course, this is all from MY perspective and how I personally interpret the events, yes I do understand the "working class guy turned dictator" thing stinks a lot, but I can't help but be enamored by it, the whole functionalism/low caste thing is very interesting and could work again in another scenario - but now, we are doing canon 😛.
This could be polished more, but I'm tired so fuck it
Ok that's it, thanks for reading go listen to "David Byrne Does Hard Times" on Spotify byeeee
Reblog with ONE song rec for the Decepticons
It can be a song:
For the faction.
That alludes to the cause in some way.
That makes you think of a particular Decepticon.
I give you:
Edit: You can reblog as many times as you like, but each reblog should only have one song.
