THANK YOU i liked season four as much as the next person but they seriously undercut their villain by making him just Some Guy tbh. they lost a lot of what made s1-3 scary

It really caught me so off guard like it truly felt like they were building to a "It's been the government fucking around with things they shouldn't" payoff. Brenner is such a GOOD villain and it feels like the immensity of his evil got kind of overshadowed bc. One of the children he stole and tormented for TWENTY YEARS is actually the Big Bad here? It's kind of a rotten take tbh, especially bc it's lowkey frames as Brenner being the last line of defense between Henry and the world and not some fucked up evil monster himself.

And Henry's whole backstory about being a troubled child felt v much like they were going out of their way to code him as mentally ill/ neurodivergent. It's exceptionally icky in hindsight! I can only hope they make sort of effort to correct it in s5 bc i really think it's an unfortunate direction for the show :///

I liked season 4 of stranger things and all but it really was some unprecedented whiplash to go from "we're dealing with an undefined, eldritch force whose true ambitions and motivations are beyond human comprehension" to "actually it was a mentally ill torture victim all along aha 🤪 he hates capitalism btw no reason" like are we really doing this trope AGAIN
