Scott and Impulse watch Gem sympathetically as she navigates her first season.

She throws herself into tasks, but Scott hears her hyperventilating the night after the zombie hoarde, overwhelmed by what the game made her do. They watch as she comes to terms with the bloodlust that doesn't leave even after she's cured, the redness wracking through her body. Impulse holds her that same night while Scott fetches wet moss to wipe away the sweat from her brow. It's easy to forget how overwhelming the redness can be the first time, and they are there to wipe her tears and hold her gently as she drifts off into an uneasy sleep.

Gem thinks the tone that coats their voices when she talks about Pearl is sympathy, and it is, but mostly it is pity. Scott knows firsthand how Pearl gets, how she lets the redness take herself over, even more natural now that she is a victor. Impulse has seen her hunt, has been on the wrong end of her blade, but he lets Gem believe it will hold. Why not? Why take this last bit of hope away from her?

Impulse doesn't have time to say goodbye, but he died as he lived, loyal and with his back to his friends; Scott lets the heavy armor fall off and feels the lightness as his shoulders relax. He's tired and weary. He has seen this all before and he doesn't need to witness another ending.

unsung benefit i think a lot of ppl are sleeping on with using the public library is that i think its a great replacement for the dopamine hit some ppl get from online shopping. it kind of fills that niche of reserving something that you then get to anticipate the arrival of and enjoy when it arrives, but without like, the waste and the money.
