Hanami, literally ‘flower viewing’, is the custom of enjoying the beauty of the flowers. "flower" in this case almost always meaning cherry blossoms (sakura).From the end of March to early May, sakura bloom all over Japan, and around the first of February on the island of Okinawa.
Hanami is one of the most popular events of Spring. Crowds of people - families, groups of friends, and groups from companies sit under the fully open cherry blossoms, usually on plastic tarps, and have a picnic celebration.
