What a great list of prompts - I'm definitely going to be using these ones for Mermay 2024, starting soon. I'd love to see other folks use these as well.
Tumblr media
I really like learning about different aquatic environments, so I made myself a MerMay prompt list themed around drawing as many different kinds of habitats as possible.

New Petra phoenix - a highly variant group which have an unfortunate likeness to the invasive harpies. The New Petra phoenix is incredibly durable with high chance of surviving in any local New Petra environments.

A heron phoenix. They tend to avoid using their flames the majority of the time, and prefer to hunt with spears, but are capable of causing the water around them to boil.

"The researchers found that most hyrax sightings occurred in the most urbanized sites. They attributed the hyraxes’ preference of the urban sites to the higher availability of water stemming from human activity."

Palestinian Sunbird - Cinnyris osea
In 2015, the Palestinian Authority adopted the species as a national bird, after losing in Israel's national bird public vote in 2008, and after Israel's 2013 campaign to remove "Palestine" from the bird's common name. The specific name osea is derived from Ancient Greek ὁσια (hosia, "holy").

I was very taken by @puddleorganism's enoki-owl-potoo designs. They had one that was domesticated, and one that was a wild type. Just as fans breed wild type bettas with domesticated types for vigor, that is what has happened here - creating a mixed golden and pale variant. Unlike the fully domesticated version, it needs more stimulation, and is harder to care for.

Hey all, you know how internet searches suck now? When the results are awful, full-of-AI, death-of-the-internet levels of bad?
Start appending date constraints to your searches - "before:2023".
My results have gone from 90% AI bullshit to ~60% usable - which frankly at this point is a huge improvement.

So I'm playing in a roleplaying game where my cannibalistic scion of Merlin is a sort of hermetic mage with extremely dodgy tendencies who goes by the nom de plume 'Unicorn'. Ironically.
And then some ruddy faeries kidnapped him, took him to the Court of Spring, and stuck him in a unicorn shape and are now busy putting garlands in his mane, having tea parties with little cakes, and chasing him around through perfect pools.
He's having an absolutely miserable time.

Funguary Feb 29 - Cryptic Magic Mushroom - Psilocybin
I finished! And I actually managed to do a mushroom per day. This one was for some reason the absolute hardest, and I'm not happy with how it turned out, but there you go. Sometimes the muse just doesn't want to provide you with anything at all.
I interpret the magic mushrooms as being related to fairy gates. So here's a satyr arriving, ready to...do perfectly innocent things. As satyrs do, of course. I gave him a softer dadbod because honestly, same.
It's been a long time since I've done art in a disciplined way, trying to do some every day. I've got a lot going on - a job, a kid, a chronic spinal disability, a mini farm, major depression and anxiety, animals to care for, all the rest. So getting here at all was a miracle. And I recorded how I did it, I might post it later.
Thankyou to @feefal for setting this up.

Funguary Feb 27 - Cryptic Blue caprinopsis
The Cryptic Blue or Big Blue is not so much a reptile as a very distant sphynx relative. Instead of eating people who cannot answer riddles, it stares judgmentally.

Funguary Feb 26 - Cryptic Prototaxites
The Cryptic Prototaxites still exists out on strange downs, off amongst lichen-covered remains of fences and other materials. It is less than a ghost of it's former self, but still it towers, a strange animal-plant, in the mist.

Funguary Feb 25 - Cryptic Stinkhorn - Clathrus archeri
Clathrus archeri, var. Mari.Lwyd is a rare form of european stinkhorn commonly found in Wales. It can reach up to ninety centimeters in total height, from generative organ to the tips of it's tentacles.
The tentacles exude a syrupy liquid commonly understood to have beer-like properties, designed to attract various insects and mollusks that then become drunk, and die near the fungus. This ensures it has plenty of nutrients to eventually grow more fungal matter under the skull and lever it to the top.
Once exposed, the skull will weather and develop a cloak-like veil, enabling it to be used as the basis of a Mari Lwyd costume. However, if not given regular alcoholic application, the fungus will deliquesce and collapse.
