Kiiiiiinda wish there was a female perspective here. In addition to knowing more than I wanted to about Asimov, it’s still treating women as an exotic species, and not mentioning we, in fact, might also be smart weirdos.

Aw, I don’t think much about those types of differences anymore, because I feel like it gets in the way of meta—and I don’t do meta much anymore either, because…I don’t know. It’s not fulfilling? And doesn’t help with my own writing?

I also finally realized that, as much as I am gogogo about characters going back on what they were first determined to do—it’s sometimes better to write simple A - B things. To that end, DSOD not only follows from the manga, that is the best choice for it. Kaiba wasn’t there at the final arc, not at the ceremonial duel, and so it fuels his mania in obvious ways instead of the convoluted relapse theory that it’d take more effort to pull off.

(But that’s not to say audiences can’t be petty about characters that go back on the decisions they made when it makes narrative sense.)

However, I can’t help but perceive the DSOD dub as accidentally showcasing a more mature version of dub-Kaiba, that maybe salvages the lack of (relatively) respectful and respecting aspects to the character, and shows the development of Seto Scully into a place that’s both more chill but. more defiant.

…though any version of DSOD is working with Seto Scully, because it exists in every version of canon, just not so blackly funny as the dub.

iirc one of adamowicz’s centaur concepts has a little text note about how it should be vaguely regal and dignified and i think that’s the secret sauce. i can’t find that specific page rn but here’s a page where that idea comes through

it looks weirdly wise and powerful in spite of obviously existing in a constant state of confusion and pain… it almost reminds me of a lion. (sphynx?) 

the final model is bethesda’s best work and i still think it falls short of capturing what he was going for
