A Special Kind of Heartache
A lil SZA’s SOS inspired Jack fic 🤭 everyone tell @harlowcomehome thank you for being an angel and helping me get out of my writing funk. WE LOVE HER YOUR HONOR
Anyways enjoy my friends 💖💖 as always, all the feedback is welcomed here!!
Tumblr media
“Babe! Can you come in here for a sec?” You yell from your bed, wrapping yourself a little tighter in all your blankets. The new SZA album was playing from your phone that laid beside you. You were listening intently and were really trying to take it all in. You just knew this was your new favorite album even though it had only dropped yesterday.
It was only a matter of seconds before you heard footsteps approaching your shared bedroom with Jack, him standing at the doorframe. “What’s up?” He asked a little out of breath. You knew he had been working tirelessly the past couple of weeks trying to produce new music, and for a split second you felt guilty for distracting him and for even thinking of asking from him what you were about to ask.
You sat yourself up on your bed, the large sherpa blanket draped over your head. “I need you to do me a favor.” You say, quickly holding a finger up at him as your favorite part in Kill Bill was about to blast through your phone speakers.
Jack waits for you to give him the signal to speak as you sway to the lyrics, him silently laughing at you.
“I need you to break up with me,” you start. You don’t even hesitate before continuing knowing that Jack would be confused on your request. “I need to really feel this album. I need to HEAL, Jack. And I can’t do that when if I’m in a happy, healthy, beautiful relationship. So break up with me.” You finish, giving Jack the metaphorical mic to speak.
He lets out a deep laugh, one from the bottom of his belly, as he shakes his head at you and walks back to his home studio. You follow behind him in a hurry, almost tripping over your fort of blankets as you scurry off the bed. You make sure to have your phone in your hand, still blasting SZA, as you follow behind him. “Break my heart, Jack! I’m begging!”
“I’m not breaking up with you.” Jack laughs to you as he approaches the kitchen, ignoring your steps behind him as he begins to make himself a sandwich.
You take in a deep sigh as you prepare yourself for what you were going to do next. You drop to your knees, grabbing his thighs as you look up at him with the biggest puppy dog eyes you could muster. “Please?” You begin to beg, silently gagging at your pathetic state.
“Get up, Y/N. You look ridiculous.” Jack laughs down to you, causing you to roll your eyes and stand up beside him.
“Yeah, you weren’t saying that in the shower this morning, Mr. Tumnus.” You say annoyingly to Jack as you straighten yourself up.
Jack drops the piece of bread that was once in his hand down on the plate in front of him, his eyes locking directly with yours. “What did you just call me?” He asks with a questionable tone.
You realized in that you had full control of this moment. If he wasn’t going to break up with you for no reason, you’d surely find one.
“I called you Mr. Tumnus.” You say confidently, crossing your arms over your chest as a smirk sat at the end of your lips. SZA was still playing in the background as you watched Jack stare at you in shock. “Oh, and Drake is cooler than you! You wanna be him so bad!” You shout to him, hoping to hit every nerve.
Jack forgot his task of making his sandwich as he walked towards his studio, choosing not to fall into your trap. You knew you needed to dig deeper and hit him where it really hurt. You took an audible gulp before this one, “Louisville sucks ass. I don’t see why anyone would be proud to be from that place.”
Jack quickly turned around, causing the two of you to be chest to chest. Jack looked down at you, waiting to see what other remark you had to say. You take another audible gulp before you finish with your final insult. If this didn’t work, you really were going to feel like such an asshole. “You are, you are a mid rapper at best.” You whisper, closing your eyes to avoid watching his reaction. You were doing this for the sake of SZA, and you couldn’t back out now.
“If I break up with you, can we get back together in like an hour or two?” Jack says, eying you up and down. You give him a frantic nod, excitement taking over as you finally get to hear SOS to its fullest potential. “Okay, well, Y/N. We’re over.” Jack says, stepping back from you.
“What, why?” You yell out for theatrics sake.
“Because you really hurt my feelings, hit me where it hurt. Damn” He finishes, walking back to his studio and closing the door behind him.
As if it was waiting for this moment, Special begins to play from your phone. You turn it up as loud is it could possibly go, ready to hear the song how it was meant to be heard- heartbroken. You scurry back to your bed in your fort of blankets just as the chorus begins.
I wish I was special
I gave all my special
You scream from under your blankets, the tears in your eyes already beginning to form. However, you weren’t heartbroken, you just felt guilt.
AWAY TO A LOSER
NOW IM JUST A LOSER
Not only did you insult Jack for the sake of really feeling the music, but here you were belting at the top of your lungs that he was a loser, which was the furthest from the truth.
You turned the song off and decided you needed to apologize to Jack. You chose to leave your fort of blankets behind this time because you wanted Jack to take you seriously.
You took a deep breath before knocking on Jack’s studio door, waiting for him to answer. You weren’t sure why you were knocking as you typically barge right in, but you had to remind yourself that you guys were broken up at the moment. It wasn’t long before the door opens, Jack staring at you in confusion. The moment that your eyes landed on his, you began to sob.
“I’m so sorry for all the mean things I said to you, Jack.” You start, managing to say those words in between gasps.
Jack only chuckles before pulling you into his arms, walking the two of you to the futon he had in the studio. He whispers “I thought this is what you wanted, Y/N,” in your ear as his nails scratched your head that was digging into his chest. If you weren’t sobbing so hard you would address the chuckles you felt leaving his body, but you didn’t have it in you at the moment.
You composed yourself after a couple of minutes, starting your apology. “It was a low blow to say that you looked like Mr. Tumnus and that Drake was cooler than you. Oh and that Louisville sucked and that you were a mid rapper.” You say in between sniffles. “I’m really sorry I said those things. I didn’t mean it. You know that right?”
Jack pulls you closer to him, kissing the top of your head as you lay your head on his shoulder. “I didn’t think you did, babe.” He laughs.
“I also called you a loser. Which isn’t true.” You say.
“When did you call me a loser?” Jack asks suspiciously, trying to recall everything you had said to him.
You gasp at your confession, taking it back immediately. “Oh I was just kidding. I never said that.” You quickly say. “Can we get back together though? I miss you.”
“I never went anywhere,” Jack laughs out, but pulling you closer to him as the two of you began to kiss on the futon.
“You know I never meant any of that? Honest?” You say between kisses and Jack laughed out loud “I know! You were just trying to hit me where it hurt, but I think you should probably make it up to me right?” He smirked and you giggled “I like how you think.”
The straddled him, kissing and sucking on his neck, which you knew would instantly change the mood.
“Nobody gets me is a pretty good song right?” He asked while you were between kisses.
“Jack!” You hit him with the pillow that laid beside you “you listened without me?”
“We broke up remember?” He laughed “I was going through it too!”

yourinstagramname: I'm backkkkkkkkk!
Did you miss me? Because I sure did miss yall 🥺
SOS is out and it's been a long time coming. Thank you to everyone who made this album possible and giving me the confidence to tell my story even if some aspects still hurt. But it's necessary in order for me to heal. Deluxe version coming soon. Until then, enjoy 😉
normani: the queen has returned!
druski2funny: how about that date now?
yourinstagramname: druski2funny don't get blocked
jackharlowsource: druski2funny everyone knows that she's jack's girl and uhhhh has anyone told him?!?! because AHHHHHHH!!!!!!
yournamesource: I already know this album is 10/10
Jack was surprised when he opened instagram and saw that you had dropped an album out of the blue after five years.
No promotion or anything.
Once you had gone ghost after your relationship crumbled, it was like you had fallen off the face of the earth.
Jack couldn’t find you no matter how much he tried, he eventually gave up and everyone around him had witnessed how big of an impact that had on him.
The two of you had been together when your first album dropped and for three years in total. After the break up, you went ghost for two years while Jack tried to distract himself with any and everything to take his mind off of you.
He had it in his mind that you were his soul mate and didn't think that the two of you would have ended up on such bad terms. Too many things got in the way of your relationship and it seemed like when one aspect was repaired, another one would come into play and cause tension.
Jack loved you or he loves you rather and only wanted the best for you even if that didn't include him. No matter how hard that would be for him to witness. He still walked around with your engagement ring and took it out to look at it from time to time to look at it. He knew that you would have said yes if it wasn't for certain rumors floating around about him at the time when the two of you were at odds.
He had proposed to you and all you did was go on tour to distract yourself from the rumors that were surrounding your boyfriend.
He cheated
He had gotten someone pregnant
He had multiple side pieces
It was way more than you could take and couldn’t stomach being married to someone who you didn’t think was telling you the truth at the moment.
But the thing is that…. He was.
He had never cheated, had never stepped out on you or got anyone pregnant.
But he understood why you told him no.
But he held out hope to be able to put that ring on your finger one day.
It was around midnight and he began listening to your album, literally ten minutes after he had seen that you dropped it.
He had missed hearing the sound of your voice.
Especially when you would sing to him in the middle of the night when he woke up from a nightmare.
It was always you.
Always.
Jack had been enjoying the album so far and knew that there were certain lines about him and your other ex- boyfriend Devin who was a piece of shit and didn't deserve you.
You would tell him about certain things that happened between the two of you and Jack made it up in his mind to never put you through that again.
But, Jack probably didn't deserve you either.
His breath hitched when he got to Nobody Gets Me.
This is the one.
The one that was about your relationship and how other things got in the way of your happiness.
Took a long vacation, no makeup, just Jay Z
You were balls deep, now we beefing
Had me butt naked at the MGM
So wasted, screaming, "Fuck that!"
Blurry now, but I meant it then
Hurry now, baby, stick it in
'Fore the memories get to kicking in
It's too late, I don't want to lose
What's left of you
How am I suppose to tell you
I don't wanna see you with anyone but me?
Nobody gets me like you
How am I supposed to let you go?
Only like myself when I'm with you
Nobody gets me, you do
You do
Nobody gets me, you do
You do
Nobody gets me, you do
You do
Nobody gets me, you do
Took me out to the ballet
You proposed, I went on the road
You was feeling empty, so you left me
Now I'm stuck dealing with a deadbeat
If I'm real, I deserve less
If I was you, I wouldn't take me back
I pretend when I'm with a man it's you
And I know that it's too late, I don't want to lose
What's left of you
How am I suppose to tell you
I don't wanna see you with anyone but me?
Nobody gets me like you
How am I supposed to let you go?
I only like myself when I'm with you
Nobody gets me, you do
You do
Nobody gets me, you do
You do
Nobody gets me, you do
You do
Nobody gets me, you do
Nobody gets me, you do
Jack remembers how you would tell him all the time, "nobody gets me how you do and I love you for loving me."
Jack listened to the song on repeat until sleep overtook his body.
When he woke up later that day, he had a full day ahead of him. Multiple appearances and interviews. Urban had been eyeing him the entire morning and knew that he had listened to your album and was waiting for him to say something about it.
Urban and the rest of PG had it on repeat since it had dropped and knew Nobody Gets Me was about Jack.
It was obvious and there was no way to get around it.

Jack was currently scrolling on his phone and came across the sneak peek of your music video. He kept watching it over and over again until Urban broke the silence.
"Call her."
"She doesn't want to talk to me."
"That song says otherwise. Come on. We ALL know that's about you."
"And what am I even supposed to say?"
"That you still love her! You haven't even looked another girl's way since the two of you ended and she basically fell off the face of the earth. I know she wants to talk to you."
"And what even makes you think that?"
"Because I messaged her and congratulated her on the album. I also mentioned how miserable you were and acted like a lost puppy without her."
"URB!"
"What? I did nothing wrong and I'm tired of your ass being depressed."
"I don't even know where to start."
"How about this? Hi, hello, I miss you, I love you and we should have been married by now. That option is still on the table because I still have your engagement ring."
"URBAN!"
"Did I lie?"
"No, but…"
"Stop being scared and go get your girl back."
A few days had passed and Jack found himself hovering over your number in his phone but never pushing it to call you.
Until Urban came up behind him and reached across to push it for him.
"Fuck! Urb!"
"It's dialing. Can't wait to hear about yall being back together. I'm about to go smoke."
Urban left and then Jack heard your soft voice come through the phone and his heart did a backflip.
"Hello?"
"Um, hey."
"Hi, it's actually really good to hear your voice. Didn't realize how much I missed it." You confessed as you were sipping on your matcha latte.
"Me too. I wanted to call you and tell you how proud I am of you. The album is amazing and it’s been on repeat since it came out."
"I'm proud of you too Mr. First Class. And your Grammy nominations. You deserve all of it and more."
"Wouldn't be here without you though."
It was silent for a few seconds before you piped up.
"I'm just going to go ahead and say it. Fuck it."
"Say what?" Jack curiously asked and his heart rate sped up, nervous about what you were going to say.
You couldn't help but to let a few tears fall and was thankful that Jack couldn't see you at the moment.
Thank goodness this wasn’t a facetime call.
"How much I fucking miss you. I know it's been two years and I… I swear that they have been the hardest two years of my life. Because I didn't plan on you not being in it."
There it was.
You couldn’t hold it in anymore and needed him to know that.
"I can't even begin to tell you how much I miss you too. Are you in L.A. by any chance?"
"I will be tomorrow."
"I need to see you in person to be able to tell you all of this."
"Do you still remember how to get to my condo?"
"How could I forget?"
"I'll be there by 3 pm."
"Can't wait to see you."
When you had landed in L.A., your heart was skipping beats at the thought of seeing Jack after two years.
Once you had reached your condo, you had taken a shower and put on some comfy clothes as you waited for Jack to get there. You flipped through Netflix in the hopes of finding something interesting to watch and decided on Boo Bitch. You were deep into the third episode when there was a knock at the door.
Here goes.
You made your way over to the door and peeked to see that it was in fact Jack. You let out a breath that you didn't realize you were holding and opened the door.
Jack did nothing but smile at you before he brought you into a hug. You don't know how long the two of you were standing there but you knew it had to have been a few minutes.
You took his hand and led him to one of the couches in the living room.
"It's so good to see you." Jack quietly said before grabbing your hand.
"You too."
"I.. I have to tell you this before I freak myself out into not saying anything." Jack said while holding your hand tighter.
"I'm listening."
"Nobody Gets Me."
You simply nodded as you were attempting to not let any tears fall. There was so much that you wanted to say, but now that he was in front of you it seemed like you froze up and was happy that he wanted to talk first.
"I don't think you realized the huge impact you had on my life. I tried dating after we broke up and no one has come close. Absolutely no one."
"That's more than what I've done. I just knew that no one would ever come close to you. And for the record, I never cheated on you."
"I know. Can I ask you something?" You quietly said.
"Anything, baby."
You instantly got a smile on your face.
"If Urban didn't tell you to call me, would you have done it on your own?"
"No, because I thought that you wanted nothing to do with me."
"I still love you. That hasn't changed and that doesn't go away overnight."
"Glad to see it's not just me. Oh and Special? I hate that he made you feel that way. You're absolutely amazing and I'm upset that I let such an amazing woman go. I know he had a big impact on your insecurities."
“Thank you for that. I’m slowly but surely healing from all that he said.”
“Um, another thing but I get it if you say no.”
“Ask away. I’m all ears.”
“I still want to be the person that puts a ring on your finger one day, so if you’re willing can we try this again?”
“Took you long enough to ask me.”

Even at a young age Dream believed in forever. She was taught to hold the people she loved close and never let them go. She knew her parents would never leave her they were her parents.
But she always feared her friends moving on and leaving her. Especially Jack, she never wanted to lose him. She had just got out of school sitting in the back of her dad’s car as he drove her to dance class. “Papì.” She looked out the window of the backseat watching the raindrops fall on the window.
“Yes princesa.” He gave her a quick glance as he focused on the road. “Can I get married.” He felt all the color drain from his face. She was still his little girl and the thought of her getting married and talking about it so soon shocked him. “No.” He spoke quickly shaking his head quickly.
“Why not.” Her tone came out as a whine, her bottom lip poking out. He tried to contain his laughter still trying to let her know he was serious. “You will never ever get married.” She huffed and crossed her arms over her chest.
“But I want to marry jack.” His laugh he was trying to hold in finally escaped. His daughter tilted his head at her not understanding why he was laughing. He looked back at her and realized she was serious.
“Oh, why’s that.” He loved how kind and loving his daughter was. He knew he always made jokes about her and Jack getting married but he never realized how serious it could be. Jack was always over and he saw the little boy as his son.
He knew that jack would hold on to her as long as he could and so would dream. But the thought that dream wanted to marry him was surprising. “So we could be together forever.” She smiled at the idea playing with her hair.
“Marriage isn’t just about being together forever hija it’s about being in love.” He told her pulling in the parking lot of her dance studio. He turned off the car and got out opening the door for his daughter, helping her out. “I love jack.” She replied grabbing his hand as they walked in the building.
“Loving him and being in love with him is not the same thing.” He shook his head and helped her out her coat. Hanging it up on the hook and helping her take off her shoes. “I’m going to marry him.” She said brightly giving a kiss on the cheek racing out the lobby into the room her class was being held.
“If you say so hija.” He said more so to himself know that his daughter because she couldn’t hear him.

Marco couldn’t remember at time in the last few years where he didn’t feel sick. He never understood why. But when Isabella all but forced him to go get a check up he found his why.
Cancer
Marco had cancer and his first thought was dream. How would she react when she found out? Would he get to see her grow up? Once the doctor told him what is was it seemed like everything around him turned into white noise.
He saw him talking but he couldn’t hear anything. Isabella was no better she was sitting right next to him, missing her shift at the restaurant. Once they made it home all Marco do was stare at the floor.
Isabella tried her best to reassure him that everything would be okay. It was only stage two they could fight this but like back at the doctors office he couldn’t hear her. She asked Maggie to pick dream up from school, telling her she would explain later.
Once he heard the front door close and listened to the little footsteps making there was into the kitchen he snapped back into reality. “Hi mamí why aren’t you at work.” She sat her backpack on the kitchen table looking at her mother standing behind her sitting father.
“Why don’t you sit down dream.” She did have to be a genius to see her parents looked upset. As far back in her memory as dream could go she never seen them look so sad. “Am I in trouble if so Jack told me to do it.” If they had any strength to laugh at there daughter they would have.
“No princesa your not in trouble.” She looked between the both of them before finally pulling out a chair to sit. “Okay then what’s wrong?” She saw the way her mothers eyes filled with tears. The way her father eyes never left her own. “Papì’s is… um-“ Her mother spoke up but stop shortly after. Not being able to find the right words.
“I’m sick dream.” She looked at Marco suspiciously almost as if she was studying him. “You don’t look sick.” He sighed softly, closing his eyes for a few moments. There was no guide book on how to tell your kid that you have cancer.
“It’s not like a regular cold baby.” Her mother spoke up giving Marco’s shoulders a gentle rub. “Then what is it?” She didn’t understand and honestly no one suspected her to. She was just a little kid after all. “It’s the kinda of sick where he might not get better.” Isabella told her gently.
“The kind of sick mamí’s Papì had.” Isabella didn’t tell dream much about her parents only that her father had cancer and mother died of another kind of sickness. Dream really didn’t understand what any of that meant. “You have cancer.” It didn’t come out as a question more like a statement like she was finally understanding.
Marco didn’t have the heart to tell her yes so he just nodded his head instead. “Your going to die?” Both her parents eyes double in size at her question. “No, no one’s saying that.” Her mother rushed out.
“But that what happens right people get cancer and they die.” She sounded nothing they knew their daughter to sound like. She sounded so hallow and empty. “I could get better.” They watch as dreams eyes filled with tears. Threatening to spill down her face.
“What if you don’t what if you die and-.” Marco saw the way her breath quickened as if she was choking on her own air. “Come here.” He reached over as she rushed into his arms holding on for dear life. “I’m not going to die dream.” He softly calmed the sobbing girl in his arms.
“Promise?” She asked through broken sobs. He tried not to tense, he looked up at his wife who shook her head all but begging him not to answer. “I promise.” Isabella went to say something but stop once she noticed the way he looked at her.
They didn’t know what was going to happen to him but he saw no reason in scaring Dream more than he needed to.
“I’m never going to leave you Dream.”

Jack knew one thing for sure at ten years old. Dream was going to be in his life forever, and he would always keep it that way. Dream was all Jack could wish for in a friend and having urban with them the trio never split up.
They were together everyday at school and almost every day after school. That was until Dream met Ashley. Who she would be with most of the time at recess and during class. The only time they got to hangout with her was after school unless she had dance class.
Which she had most days, oh yeah and Ashley was in that too. He found the times he spent with dream by himself fading away as well. “Hey guys.” He turned around slightly to see dream walking over to him and urban as he stood by his locker.
They both ignored her approaching presence as they continued there small talk conversation. “Um hello did you not hear me.” She taped Jack’s shoulder once she finally reached him.
“Did you hear something urb.” He asked pulling his backpack out his locker. Placing a few notebooks inside. “Nope you.” Jack just shook his head closing his backpack and stood up throwing it over his shoulder. “Don’t be mean to me I’m right here.”
Her eyebrows furrowed at her friends confused what she had done. They had never treated her so cold before. “Oh now you want to talk to us.” Jack asked her turning around to face her. Urban standing slightly behind him watching the argument unfold.
“I always want to talk to you guys.” She laughed at the two. “Could’ve fooled us.” He pushed past her staring his journey to the front of the school urban and dream trailing behind. “What do you mean?” When dream didn’t understand something she got upset.
Which jack knew and he continued to push her buttons anyway. “Where’s your new best friend?” Once they made it outside on the sidewalk to wait for there parents he faced her.
“Who Ashley? I don’t know.” He could tell by the way she was looking at him she was getting mad. “Oh so you admit you’ve replaced us.” He yelled at her causing all the other kids around them to look.
“What no I didn’t!” Urban looked back and forth between the two nervously. Dream and Jack didn’t fight often or at all really. So watching them yell at each other like this was weird.
Yes you did go hang out with her.” He rolled his eyes at her. She stood there for a few seconds glaring at him. “Fine I will.” She huffed and stormed away from the pair getting into the back of her moms car before pulling off.
“Do you think you were a little too mean to her?” Urban spoke up as he looked at his best friend. As he watched dreams car move farther away in the distance. “No.” He answered he was upset he was being replaced.
“She’s just making a new friend jack and plus she probably feels out numbered. She just might want a friend that’s a girl.” She tried to reason with his upset friend. “Whatever.”
“Dude.” He spoke through out laughs. “What” He was confused why urban was laughing at him. “Your jealous.” He poked his arm as Jack’s eyes widened. “No I’m not.” He rushed out. He just missed his friend why was that so hard for everybody to understand.
“Do you like her?” He whispered make sure no one was listening to him. “What no like dream that’s gross.” He shivered at the thought with a look of disgust on his face. “You do!” He yelled out a little louder than intended.
“No I don’t so shut up.” He snapped. Gripping the straps of his backpack. Jack like dream what no never. She was his friend and always would be, Nothing more.
Not that Jack regretted his choice by picking a fight with dream but he wasn’t happy. It had only been a couple days since they talked but he missed her. She avoided him in the hallways and even at home.
Urban had been begging him to apologize but he didn’t really know how. She hurt his feelings and sure he didn’t have to go and start a fight but he was mad. He finally had enough and decided that he man up and talk to her.
She was sitting on the steps of her front porch, picking the petals off a flower. He walked over sitting beside her, placing his backpack right next to him. “Hey.” He hesitantly spoke up after awhile.
“Oh your talking to me now.” She turned to look at him rolling her eyes once she saw his sheepish face. “I’m sorry I was mean.” She looked at him angrily for a few seconds before she finally released a sigh. She didn’t like being mad at him. It not like she was a lot.
But it didn’t change the fact that she missed him. “You hurt my feelings.” Her head fell to rest on his shoulder. He wrapped one of his arms around her pulling her into a side hug. “I know I didn’t mean it.”
“I won’t hang out with Ashley anymore if you and urby don’t want me to.” Dream really was a loyal friend, he knew that. Anything jack needed or asked her to do she would, but you wouldn’t see that until later.
“No it’s fine, We just miss you.” She smiled softly at this. She missed them to. She never really had a girl that was a friend before, so when she met Ashley and she liked the same things Dream did she just had to be her friend.
Her goal wasn’t to hurt her best friends but Jack and urban really didn’t understand her love for dance and she couldn’t blame them. She knew they tried their best. “How about we all hangout together she’s really cool you guys would like her.” He just nodded.
He didn’t like the thought of sharing Dream. He already had to do it with urban so adding someone else would only cut his time with her down more. But if it was what she wanted he would try. “I got you something.” He spoke up after awhile of sitting in silence. He pulled away for her and went to open his backpack.
“What is it?” He could see the excitement rolling off of her. He hid the present to his side a little, making sure she couldn’t see. “Close your eyes.” She did and held out her eyes for good measure. He placed the gift in her hands.
“Okay open.” Once she did she saw a medium sized pink stuffed bunny. She stared at for a few seconds taking it in. “Do you like it?” To be quite honest he had never seen dream so quiet. “I love it!” She pulled him into a hug holding on tightly. Everything was finally right again.

“I thought you had early dance class?” Jack mumbled turning away from the energetic girl jumping on his bed, throwing the blanket over his head. “It got cancelled.” She cheerfully said pulling the blanket off his face. She leaned over poking him. “Stop that.” He grumbled trying to grab his blanket. Her vice grip on it making it difficult.
“Come on you said I could show you my new costume for my competition.” She ripped the blanket all the way off him. “What time is it?” He asked her rubbing the sleep from his eyes. “Almost noon.” She reached over to his nightstand handing him his glasses.
“How did you even get in here?” He grabbed his glasses from her placing them on his face. “The window.” She mumbled looking down slightly. His eyes transfixed on his open window looking back at dream. “I thought your mom told you to stop using the tree to climb from your house to mine?” Jack laughed getting out of bed, to put on pair of shoes.
“She’s went to work early at the restaurant I seized my opportunity.” She shrugged climbing on his bed to the open window. “She going to the competition?” Meeting her on the bed following behind her as she stuck her body out the window climbing on the strong branches. “She better she promised. She already missed seven of them.” She walked along one of the branches carefully grabbing on to a few as she made into her room.
Jack sighed at that he knew that Isabella loved seeing dream dance. It’s why she signed her up at three years old. He knew she didn’t like missing them but the restaurant had got busy lately seeing as they were short staffed. “You know she try’s Dream.” He told her as he took her outreached hand helping him off the tree and in her room.
“Not hard enough.” She rolled her eyes walking over to the black dress hanging on the back of her door to her bathroom. “It’s always the same excuse ‘Sueñito lo siento mucho Sabes que mamá lo hace lo mejor que puede, iré al siguiente.’ Like come on change it up once.” She shook her head grabbing the dress walking inside the bathroom cracking the door, so they could still talk.
Jack laughed at her taking a seat on her bed. “You know you sounded just like her right then.” He heard her giggle from behind the wooden white door giving him a funny feeling in his stomach which he just shook off. He had been getting that a lot recently around dream which he didn’t fully understand. Which is why he ignored it.
“It’s kinda easy when she says it to you seven times in a row.” He heard an unzipping noise meaning she must’ve just now starting to put on the costume. “Would you hurry up I’m bored.” He got up grabbing a basketball from the other side of the room. He sat back down tossing it up in the air and catching it. “Would you shut up I’m going as fast as I can.” She spoke zipping up the dress and opening the door walking out.
His concentration on the basketball seised not bothering to catch it as he looked at her. Making the ball fall to the ground bouncing a couple of times as his eyes never left her. Dream wasn’t a girly girl the only time she ever dressed like one was for a dance competition or something important. Most of the time it’s was baggy pants and hoodies.
Jack thought she was pretty either way I mean she’s his best friend. But right now there was something about his usually Tom boy friend wearing the most beautiful thing he had ever seen her wear that made that feeling in his stomach come back. “What do you think, you’ve been starring for awhile I look like an idiot don’t I?” She asked slowly shifting her weight from one foot to the next.
He shook his head quickly trying to talk over the lump in his throat. “No you just…um you look…” He couldn’t find the word he was looking for it was like all the words in the world had left his brain. “Geez Jack do I look that bad?” Her head fell looking at her sock covered feet. “N..No you look beau…beautiful D.” Something about they way he stuttered made her look at him.
“Thanks.” She smiled shyly to him. Walking over to sit next to him. “Ashley told me that Avery kissed her yesterday at school.” She blurted out to him making his head snap up to her. “No way.” He gasped out eyes widening. “Yeah apparently it sucked.” She giggled making him crack a smile. “Seriously?” He questioned shaking his head. “Yeah she said he kissed like a frog.” Dream grimaced.
The statement made jack wince. “God I hope I don’t kiss like that.” He shook his head looking at the baby pink walls of her room. “You wanna see?” She asked him looking at the side of his face. “What do you mean?” He gave her a confused look. “You can kiss me and I’ll tell you.” She shrugged like it was no big deal.
Which made Jack jump out of his seat standing in front of her. “What!” This was a huge deal to Jack. He had never kissed anyone before and neither had dream. “I can’t kiss you that weird!” He whispered shouted to her not knowing if her dad was home. “I don’t think so.” Her eyebrows pulled together giving him a confused look. “Dream you’re my best friend I’m not kissing you.” He shook his head pacing around the room.
“Fine I guess you’ll never know if you kiss like a frog then.” She snickered walking back to the bathroom to change. Once she closed the door he didn’t understand why he felt this wave of sadness. He made right decisions she was his best friend he couldn’t kiss her. Right?
“What do you mean you can’t come!” Dream screamed into the phone at her mom. “Sueñito lo siento mucho Sabes que-“ Before Isabella could finish her sentence Her daughter cut her off. “No you’re a liar! You promised you’d come it’s nationals! I hate you if you don’t come I will never ever talk to you again!” She yelled seeing Maggie’s eyes widen as she finished the braid in dreams hair.
Jack just gulped as he sat next to her. Jack knew dream loved her mom deeply. But he also knew that she only did dance for her and even though he didn’t know significance to ‘nationals’ he knew that only the best dancers got invited he knew it was a big deal. This would be her third time going and she had never one here before she always got beat out for first place by some girl named Stefani.
Ashley always came in third which she was fine with. No, dream was competitive she needed to beat Stefani even if it was only once. Eveytime she had always gone up against her (which was a lot seeing as they were the same age) she had always one. Dream hated it she hated her. She always rubbed dreams face in it.
“Hija-“ Before Isabella could reply Dream hung up the phone giving it to Maggie. “Dream..” Maggie stammered off not really knowing what to say. “Is my dad here?” Her voice quivered, her eyes welling up with tears as she looked at her self in the mirror in front of her. Maggie’s heart broke. Isabella had been working hard ever since they found out Marco had cancer. Insurance only covers so much and they had bills to pay.
She knew dream wouldn’t understand, she just wanted to make her parents proud. “Yeah he out there waiting in the audience.” She told her softly try to not make the little girl even sadder. “Thank you for helping me get ready Maggie….again.” She mumbled playing with her hands.
“No problem sweetheart…why don’t me and Jack go wait with everybody else while you go over your dance you go on in thirty minutes.” She smiled at the smaller girl pack up all dreams things. “I’m going to wait here with her.” Jack told his mom watching dream put on her ballet shoes. “Are you sure?” She asked unsure. “Yeah I’ll go to the seats before she dances.” He replied not really looking at his mom.
Which made her laugh softly. He looked completely mesmerized by his best friend who was wrapping her ribbons of her shoes around her legs. “Okay good luck dream.” She nodded as Maggie dragged all Dreams stuff making her way to the audience to sit down.
Jack watched dream rerun her dance over hundred time as he kept replaying the music. Once her thirty minutes was up they walked back stage. They watched Stefani’s dance on stage. They both had to admit she was good. Well better than good she was amazing.
He could tell dream’s confidence was shook by the way she pulled at the ends of her dress. “Hey you know you’re way better than her right?” He grabbed her hand away from her dress trying to bring her attention to him.
Although her eyes were glued to the girl on the stage. “Then why does she beat me every time?” Her tone was dry eyes following every move Stefani made. “So we’ll do something different this time to bring you good luck.” He told her making her look at him. “Like what?” her eyes rolling when she heard people began to clap when the music stopped.
“Kiss me.” He told her quickly looking over to the stage watching Stefani walk off looking back at dream who just looked at him blankly. She leaned up slightly kissing his cheek. Leaving a red kiss mark. “I’ve done that before and I still lost to her.” She spoke shanking her head at him.
She went to walk away waiting for them to call her name. When jack pulled her hand back causing her to be pulled closer to him. Before she could even speak to ask him what he was doing he grabbed her face with one hand and leaned and connected their lips. It was sweet simply kiss that only lasted five seconds. But dream knew one thing.
Jack did not kiss like a frog.
Once he pulled away that feeling in his stomach returned this time strong. “Good luck.” He smiled and walked away from her. Going to sit in the audience. Dream stood there blinking not moving she looked towards the stage on the other side she saw a wide eyed Ashley with her mouth open.
When jack made it back to audience he sat next to Marco it being the only open seat. He looked over at the boy his eyes going to the red lipstick mark on his cheek. Which he didn’t think too much about. Untill his eyes fell to the lipstick on his lips. His eyes widened a bit.
“Please welcome act number 76 Dream Santiago preforming dark hearts.” The announcer spoke as dream walked on to the stage standing in the middle posing waiting for her music to start. His eyes fell to her face see the red lipstick on her lips.
This made him chuckle lightly as he reached into his Back pocket. Helping a blushing Jack wipe off the lipstick marks as best as he could. Jack however stayed looking at the stage watching Dream. He thought she looked amazing. Her turns were sharp. Her feet were pointed. Her legs looked long and straight. Her facial expressions were on point to the music and her jumps were high.
Now he didn’t know what half of those words meant. He just remembered dream told him all those things were important. Once she was done and walked off the stage everyone got off up and cheered for her. Before she could take in account what happened she was dragged away by a hyper Ashley.
“Oh my god dude! You were amazing. Everything was perfect. Forgot all that sorry I tried you kissed jack!” She yelled the last part making dream slap a hand over her mouth. “Dude shush I don’t know he just kissed me.” She whispered looking around seeing if anyone was staring at them.
“Are you guys like dating and didn’t tell me!” Making dreams eyes go wide. “What! No I told him about you and Avery this morning and he said he hoped her didn’t kiss like that so I told him to kiss me he said no I let it go and then he kissed me to wish me good luck I guess.” She rushed out all in one breath.
“What does this mean?” Ashley asked her, her voice still low. “Nothing we’re best friends it was just a good luck kiss, a make sure I don’t kiss like a frog kiss.” She told her grabbing her hand walking to sit down in chairs backstage. “Did he?”she leaned in.
“No he definitely did not”
After making small talk and Ashley bringing up Jack kissing dream at least five more times. It was time for them to go back on stage for their age division. Her , Ashley and Stefani were all in the 12 to 15 age category this year which in itself was hard for them. Last year they were in 8 to 11 they were the bigger kids it was easier for them to win.
Now they were the younger ones but all that Dream cared about was making the top ten. Stefani wasn’t even a factor in her mind. All she kept thinking about was the fact that jack had kissed her he said it would bring her good luck.
“This is the scoring for our 12 to 15 age division, the will be crowned miss Starlight and receive five hundred dollars and will obviously be a national title holder and is automatically invited back to nationals next year.” The crowd cheered as everyone got ready for them to announce the winners.
“In tenth place number 64 Silence miss Ashley Moon.” As her name was call she immediately looked at dream bringing her into a hug, before quickly getting up and getting her trophy standing in line waiting for the others to be called. As time passed more and more girl got call standing in line holding their trophy’s smiling.
“In forth place, number 75 Cry miss Stefani Parks.” Dream felt all the color leave her body. Stefani got fourth place. She always beat dream. Always, and now she got fourth place and Dream hadn’t been called yet. She didn’t place.
“Oh no…poor dream.” Clay mumbled his face falling. Everyone’s heart ached for the girl and even though she tried not to show it her own heart broke. They all slightly fell back in their seats. Well, except jack he sat the edge. He believed in her he knew that she was amazing.
He knew she could beat Stefani that she could beat everyone. To him dream was the best dancer that ever lived. Even though she was twelve years old. Hey cut him slack he was young he didn’t know any better.
Dream just sat there her hands playing with ribbons of her shoes not even looking up as third and second place were called. “And our first place overall in the 12 to 15 age division being crowned miss energy number 76 Dark hearts….Dream Santiago.”
As soon as they said her number way before they even said her name Jack jumped out of his chair. “YES!” Everyone else getting up cheering for her as well. She felt her heart drop and she snapped her head up to look at everyone looking at her. She quick got up walking to her place in line.
They placed a tiara on her head giving her a sash to wear. Placing a trophy right next to her that was taller than her. She couldn’t believe it she looked at the crowd seeing her dad, Maggie,Brian and clay standing clapping for her. Her eyes falling to jack who was now standing in his chair jumping up and down with the biggest smile on his face.
Seeing him made her smile even wider if that was possible. But is soon faltered slightly when she noticed her mom wasn’t there. She had missed her performance and she had missed her win. “Ladies and gentlemen let give a round of applause to our winners.Take a bow girls.” All the girl bowed on stage. Once the applause was done all the girls walked off stage.
Waiting for the next age division to receive there awards. Ashley ran up to dream grabbing her in a hug. “You did it! You beat her.” Dream laughed at her best friend. “Great job you won to y’know?” She questioned pulling away from her. “You know I don’t care about this stuff.” She shrugged causing her friend to shake her head at her. “I’m gonna go find my moms good job dream!” She yelled running off to the main room of the building.
As dream started to walking to go find her own family, dragging her heavy ass trophy against the ground seeing as she couldn’t carry it Stefani stopped her. “Hey…I just wanted to say good job it was about time you won.” Giving her fake smile. “You too it’s about time you lost white girl.” Causing Stefani to scoff as dream just slow dragged her self and her trophy away.
It took about fifteen minutes to make it to the main room, having to stop now and then to catch her breath. Before she could even look around she was pushed on the ground someone jumping on top her rolling around on ground bringing her to a hug. “Ouch.” She landed on top of her attacker.
Then on holding on her tightly. “You did it.” Jack whispered to her him never letting go of her. “I thought you wanted to be a rapper not a football player.” He rolled his eyes at her comment, he loosened his grip not completely letting go but making it easier for her to breathe. She looked down at him a lazy smile on his face.
“Thank you.” She told him sweetly pecking his cheek leaving a mark. “W…what di..did I do?” His stuttering causing her to smile. “The good luck.” She replied kissing his other cheek. She got off him and dusted her self off and helping him up. “They’re my national winner.” Hearing Marco’s voice make her smile and turn around running into his arms.
He caught her picking her up wrapping his arms around her. “Estoy muy orgullosa de ti, princesa. Hiciste un trabajo increíble.”He whispered to her as a nine year old clay looked at his brothers face. “What happened to your face.” His parents looked at their oldest son face amused making him blush.
Today was hands down best day of dreams life. Until it wasn’t.“Did mamí come?” Dream asked the group making her father sigh. “I’m sorry princesa, no.” Her smile fell as she tucked her bottom lip in between her teeth.
“How about we all go to the restaurant and show her your win dream.” Brian told her, making her slowly nod to him. “But you’re carrying that.” She pointed to her trophy grabbing clays hand and walking out. Jack chasing after them.
The car ride to restaurant was quiet jack and dream in Marco’s car the other Harlow’s in their own. Once they made it Marco told the kids to wait in the car as he went in. They watched as he talk to host at the window before coming back out talking to Brian then getting in the car.
“Carmen said she left not that long ago to go see you dance, she might have just got there we’ll meet her at home.” She nodded at him as he made there way home the got out the car Marco putting the trophy in the living room for Isabella to see when she walked in.
Dream could tell you the exact day she realized true love wasn’t real. The way they painted it out in the story books, that shit didn’t happen in real life. Princesses weren’t perfect.
She thought they were, but after hearing her parents scream at each other for hours when she was supposed to be sleeping. She heard first hand that her mother wasn’t a princess she sounded like the evil queen. It was only a couple hours after her big win her mother just now getting home.
“I’m fucking tired Marco!” She jumped at the sound of her mother yelling. Isabella always tried her hardest to save face in front of her daughter. She never needed dream to hear or see this.
“Mi amor please just-.” Marco sounded so tired. All the chemo and radiation treatments were taken a toll on him. He was exhausted and sick everyday. “Do not tell me to calm down.” Her mother cut him off. She sounded so angry.
She curled up close to her window holding the stuffed pink bunny jack and gotten her for as an apology. Trying to decide if she should plan her escape or not. “Can we not fight.” He sighed, his words coming out strained.
“We never fight it’s always your to tired you just got back from the hospital, what about me what about what I want.” She flinched at every word. Sure her mom yelled at her occasionally when she did something rebellious.
But in all her elven years, she had never seen her yell at her dad.“I don’t understand, I thought you had everything you wanted?” His words came out as more of a question. She looked out her window, which was a straight across from Jack’s. A tree in the middle connecting the two.
To see if he was still awake. She didn’t know how late it was but he always made her feel better when she was sad. His light was off so she knew he was sleeping.“I don’t! We have everything you want you inconsiderate selfish bastard.” Her eyes widened, this was not right.
“Isabel-“ This was not like her mother at all and by the tone of her father’s voice he noticed it too. Maybe she was stressed she had been working at the restaurant a lot more to cover Marco’s hospital bills. Insurance only did so much.
“No Marco I hate you.” She sounded so cold. She was spitting her words out like they were venomous. “I hate this house.” Dream was frozen to her bed in fear. She never thought she could ever be afraid of her mother until now.
“I hate this neighborhood.” She heard the sound of things slamming against the wall. The sound of objects breaking. “I hate this life you forced me to have all because you wanted your stupid Sueño americano.”
“I hate our daught-.” She stopped her own sentence with gasp. As dreams eyes filled with tears she remembered how quiet it got. She would never forget how quiet it got. Her mom hated her? The woman who brought her into this world hated her?
“You want to blame me that’s fine. You want to hate me for everything you agreed to, Vale, pero no te atrevas a traer mi el Sueñito a esta Isabella.” Her father finally spoke up. His voice was stern but he still sounded in so much pain.
“Ella es inocente, es perfecta y es lo único bueno de lo verdaderamente malo en lo que te has convertido.” Marco was already a very broken man. To him he was supposed to be strong and in charge and now he was sick and Isabella just broke him even more.
“Marco I didn’t-.” Her father cut her off before she had the chance to continue a she did to him earlier. “Enough!” He yelled, Marco wasn’t the yelling type he never raised his voice to anyone. “Leave.” He sounded so out of breath. She just bet he looked so tired. “What?” Her voice was low so low that dream wasn’t even sure she heard her.
“If you don’t want this life, I forced you to have leave and never come back.” She remembered the way the tears fell from her eyes after she tried for so long to hold them back. “I’m giving you the chance now go Isabella.”
And she did.
She packed up everything she had and she left. Dream watched as her mother pulled out of the driveway with no hesitation and she never came back.
She tucked the pink stuffed bunny under her arm and slowly walked out of her room. She tiptoed her way down the hall looking through the crack of her father’s door way. His face in his hand’s and shoulders slightly shaking, she figured he was crying.
She looked around the room and saw all the broken glass and pictures frames adorned on the wooden floor. She slowly walked into the room stoping in front of her father. Clearing her throat to grab his attention.
He slowly looked up with his blood shot eyes watching his little girl giving him a bright smile. “Do you want to get ice cream?” He laughed softly at his Dream nodding his head yes.
She took his hand in hers dragging him to stand and guiding him down the hall towards the kitchen. They sat there in a comfortable silence eating ice cream. Marco never asked her is she overheard the whole thing, he knew she did.
And no matter how long dream tried she would never forget that day. The day she realized true love didn’t exist.

“Yes you did go hang out with her.” He rolled his eyes at her.
