Prayer. The very question “Does prayer work?” puts us in the wrong frame of mind from the outset. “Work”: as if it were magic, or a machine—something that functions automatically. Prayer is either a sheer illusion or a personal contact between embryonic, incomplete persons (ourselves) and the utterly concrete Person. Prayer in the sense of petition, asking for things is a small part of it; confession and penitents are its threshold, adoration its sanctuary, the presence and vision and enjoyment of God its bread and wine. In it God shows Himself to us. That He answers prayer is a corollary—not necessarily the most important one—from that revelation. What he does is learned from what He is. From C.S. A thought for today. Many times we find ourselves in seasons of waiting, either for our situation to change or for the Lord's return. Patience strengthens us. “And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope: And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us” (Rom. 5: 3-5 KJV). The Triumph Of Patience It is not the thought of the Bible writers that the patience that is to be commended is either a state of indifference to evil, or a mild and weak consenting to wrongs that ought to be resisted. It is rather a quality of self-control that preserves the soul from petulance and complaining, that gives it strength to endure, that endows it with dignity and calmness in the midst of confusion and opposition. There are times when protest and resistance become a duty. But most of the difficulties of life yield to patience, self-control, and the restraint of passion and hasty speech. We call them blessed which endured; ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord, how that the Lord is full of pity and merciful (Jas. 5:11). In your patience ye shall win your souls (Lk. 21:19). Hear us in Thy mercy, gracious Lord, when we draw near with our imperfect supplication. Grant us the patience that overcomes all difficulties through faith in God. We thank thee for the lives that illustrate the great virtues which beautify character. May we not think the days of heroism past forever, but rather the more earnestly seek for ourselves the graces that endure. In putting out of our lives wrath, malice, and hasty speech, help us to win the true victory. Our Master is our supreme example. Help us to follow Him. Amen. Carl Alfred Weeden-born on 14 April 1916 in Trinidad, Colo.-grew up in Colorado and was appointed a midshipman at the Naval Academy on 22 June 1936. He graduated from the Naval Academy in June 1940 and reported for duty on USS Arizona (BB 39) on 9 June 1940. Ensign Weeden spent his entire but brief naval career in Arizona. He was killed during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941, which sank Arizona at the outset. Ensign Weeden was awarded the Purple Heart Medal posthumously. This was my second cousin,Carl Weeden, a Naval Officer from Annapolis. He died on the U.S.S. Arizona at Pearl Harbor. The Navy named a Buckley-class destroyer escort after him.
