The Lesser Waterboatman Corixa punctata at Barview Jetty on the Oregon coast, 27 August 2019. These guys are tricky--note the third pair of legs folded and modified into "oars" with "paddles," while the second leg pair trails behind. The first pair of legs is way forward on the prothorax and smushed up against the inner concave surface of the head mask, giving the impression of labial palps.

Another adorable little Pachygrapsus crassipes at Barview Jetty in Garibaldi OR, 30 August 2017. I saw tons of these guys down there, but (understandably) they’d scramble for shelter and wedge themselves into crevices the moment I blundered across them.

Profile view of my friend from Tolovana. I found this little guy/gal on an arid stretch of beach far from its natural (tidepool) habitat; I have no idea how it got there. S/he was so desperate for shelter that when I crouched down to take photos it scurried into the shadow created by my body and wedged him/herself into the cool, soggy pleats of my pants leg, which was both endearing and heartbreaking. I snatched it up and deposited it in one of my water shoes to keep it moist until I could relocate it to an actual rock pool, to which it returned with obvious relief.

Bugs at Hockinson Meadows Community Park, 18 August 2017: a dead but beautifully intact assassin bug, robber fly with prey, and the tiniest cuckoo wasp I’ve ever seen. Not very exciting, I know, but it’s been a slow summer--I’ve gotta take what I can get.  : p
