My headcanon is that Shepard had a teeny-tiny crush on Garrus in ME1 but the girl is a professional so she just shoved that surprising development way down to think about later. 

But sometimes, lets say when she’s injured and a little buzzed from the medi-gel, she lets some of her inner thoughts out. ^^

This is Desolas Arterius’ unit: Take a close look at their faces.

Look at what’s missing.

It’s odd, isn’t it, how a Palaven General* seems to have an entirely barefaced unit?

Now, of course, it’s easier, presumably, to look past face paint when your own baby brother doesn’t have any tats himself. Certainly it’s easier to see the discrimination those people face when someone close to you is experiencing it. But beyond that, it’s almost ingenious on Desolas’s part that his entire squad seems to be bare faced:

By being the only turian with face paint on a ship full of turians who don’t, he automatically puts himself above his crewmen on social prestige alone. He seems to be a younger general – and given that Saren is nineteen in Evolution, then Desolas cannot presumably be older than his late thirties/early forties if they share the same parents – and those marks seem to automatically give him a certain level of authority. It’s notable that the only exception to this is seen on Desolas’ ship serves as a medic. Literally the entire combat squad is bare-faced. And this medic is the only one with marks, and, notably, he’s not in a situation where he’s actually spending hands on time with the patient (that honor goes to two bare-faced medics). Desolas purposefully manipulates the system so that hes top dog, both in rank and social order. 

Given that barefaces are discriminated in turian society and turian society holds the military as their most important civic institution, it stands to reason that barefaced turians are very aware of barefaced discrimination in the military. So suddenly what happens to a bareface when a general of an elite unit considers people like you, actually worth hiring and promoting? (Including women – Abrudas, his lieutenant, is female.) Then you surge in popularity among those barefaces, and you get a lot of people not only auditioning for very few slots; Desolas has the honor of picking and choosing the bravest and the brightest to work with him, out of a group that most turian generals wouldn’t touch. Obviously those people are ungodly grateful for Desolas seeing their promise, and work hard to please him.

And then you even get some people thinking that Desolas Arterius is the Greatest General Ever. How could you criticize his plans when he so clearly believes in turian ethics, in promoted based solely on hard work and devotion to the cause? This gives Desolas the power to get away with a lot… like say, promoting his baby brother up to his elite unit** with only (at most) five years of military experience or suddenly opening temples that had been closed for millenniums on seemingly little more than a whim. (This might be why Desolas gets a pass for promoting Saren, while Victus rightly gets flayed for promoting Tarquin; that and/or Saren was a great deal more competent on the battlefield.)

Saren was always an intelligent man, and it’s clear that that’s a trait he shares with his brother. It’s not a surprise that the reapers indoctrinated Desolas: he was clever, strong, charismatic. 

It’s such a pity, because he was so bright, that he never saw the end coming, never saw how he doomed his little brother. Certainly he cared for Saren; perhaps one of the reasons he worked so hard to keep a barefaced unit was to give Saren a space where he could be among other barefaces. Time after time in Evolution, Saren points out that his plans won’t work, and time after time he tells Saren to shut up, that he knows what he’s doing. It’s not clear exactly when he was indoctrinated – though Saren clearly believes he has free will until he hits the monolith, Desolas, like TIM, speaks the Reaper’s language long beforehand, and constantly puts the artifact above everything else. I suspect that, like with Saren, the truth is that he was indoctrinated long before it became apparent on Palaven, as it did for Saren on Virmire.

It really is heartbreaking too, knowing that Desolas’ cycle repeats itself twenty years later with his little brother. Desolas studies the monolith; so too does Saren study Sovereign. Desolas runs experiments on the indoctrinated “meta-turians”; Saren runs his on Salarians, on Krogans. Both are convinced they’re doing the right thing, even if it doesn’t prove popular with those around them.

And in the end, they both share the same fate. Given that Desolas does seem to truly love and care for his brother (and perhaps part of the reason he promotes barefaces is to give Saren company that won’t discriminate against him), I don’t think this is what he would have wanted.

But the cycle continues regardless.

I don’t know what it’s like now but I sincerely hope they’ve improved welsh lessons in primary school beyond the hour or two a week I had. My welsh has only improved beyond conversational because a) I have a welsh-speaking relative who I harass whenever I want to learn a new word or b) Duolingo and self-learning. Honestly I hope the govt uses that service because it’s fab!

The Welsh Government have recently announced that to apply for a job with them soon you will have to demonstrate a ‘courtesy level’ of Welsh. And ooooh boy are the bitter trolls angry about this!

So let’s take a little look shall we? Dewch ymlaen pawb. (come on everyone.)

Firstly what on earth is a courtesy level of Welsh? Well-

So answering the phone bilingually ‘Bore Da-Good Morning’, ‘Prynhawn Da- Good afternoon’ and this is really wild but you can use those same words on speaking to a real life person too 🤯

Interpreting short texts sounds hard? Yes but you can use the provided technology to help you.

What if I am the best person for the job, it’s my ideal job but I don’t speak Welsh? Well my friend….

Courses for staff will be free to staff. Often provided during the working day. And you have six months to show you are willing to learn. Six months….

Look, sarcasm aside Welsh is an official living language of Wales. We use it daily. We tell jokes, we fall in love, we complain through Welsh. My mother didn’t (couldn’t) speak English till she was 8. I didn’t speak English till I was 3…. There is a Welsh Language TV Chanel. You may have heard of some of the actors Matthew Rhys, Ioan Gruffudd, Alexander Vlahos or Iwan Rheon- all Welsh speakers- all been on S4C.

All Welsh speakers speak English though. Yes, yes we do- two languages in one head-aren’t we clever 🤷🏻‍♀️ just because we can doesn’t mean we shouldn’t have the choice. The Welsh language (Cymraeg) is alive because people fought for it…and the fight goes on. But because we’re this tiny little country who also speak English it’s a ‘dead’ I.e not important language. Fuck Off!

What about immigrants?- you know buddy immigrants have more than one language themselves- usually several and have proven themselves by learning Welsh.

What about Welsh people who don’t want to learn Welsh though? Um, not answering that one!

The Welsh Government are the Government of a country with two official languages- asking for a courtesy level of one of those two languages is as it should be.
