When young filmmakers Agnès Varda and Jacques Demy were married in 1959, they seemed like an unlikely pair. Varda’s work is characterized by avant-garde documentary realism, in keeping with the “Left Bank” sensibilities of Chris Marker and Alain Resnais. Demy’s films, on the other hand, have the visual flair and idealism of Hollywood fare, showing a reverence for American cinema akin to that exhibited by Nouveau Vague filmmakers like Truffaut and Godard. But a closer look at the work of Varda and Demy in the early years of their marriage reveals that these superficial differences in style belie deeper similarities. Under the glitzy surface of Demy’s musicals are  somber themes of class disparity and war, and Varda’s guerrilla style brims with a romantic optimism that still permeates her recent work. Varda and Demy stayed married until his death from AIDS in 1990, but the works they created side by side remain a testament to one of the richest partnerships in cinema history.

This is what you do on your very first day in Paris. You get yourself some rain, not just a drizzle but honest to goodness rain.  And you find yourself someone really nice and drive her through the Bois de Boulogne in a taxi.  The rain’s very important because that’s when Paris smells its sweetest. It’s the damp chestnut trees, you see […] Well sure. I can order myself some rain, I can get myself a taxi, that’s easy. But can I find myself someone really nice? That’s not so easy, Sabrina.

My name is Detective Laurel Hester. I’ve worked for the Ocean County police department for 23 years. Recently, I was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. When my heterosexual colleagues die their pensions go to their spouses, but because my partner is a woman I don’t get to do that. In my career I’ve never asked for special treatment, I’m only asking for equality.
