CHAPTER 6
You haven’t seen Joel in what feels like forever. The kiss you two shared was unexpected and, damn, was it good. But you still wished that it hadn’t happened. If you thought Joel hating you was uncomfortable, it’s nothing close to this. You spotting him coming home from work, him seeing you and bolting inside. He’s definitely avoiding you. And not gonna lie, it feels like shit. You know, however, that your dad and Joel planned a 4th of July party over at the Millers. Your dad finally got some time off and Joel has a pool, so they figured it would be a good way to celebrate. The upside is that Joel can’t avoid you in his own home.
“So, what do you think I should do?” You ask your childhood best friend, Larry, while on FaceTime.
“Well, it’s obvious he’s into you, he just got cold feet. I say you try again. What’s the worst that could happen?” Larry says.
“He rejects me again.” You let out a small chuckle.
“Oh, come on. With your body in the right bathing suit, he won’t be able to resist.”
Larry helps you pick out just the right suit. Small, black and showing a lot of skin.
“A bit skimpy for a friends and family party, don’t you think?” You say looking at yourself in the mirror.
“That’s the point.” You both laugh.
After hanging up with Larry, the nerves start to hit you. You don’t think you could handle another rejection from Joel. It wasn’t exactly a rejection, he did kiss you back, but it still left you feeling so small when he practically ran away after.
Upon arriving at the Miller's house with your dad, you noticed there were less people than at the barbeque a few months ago. You don’t mind, though, the people you liked were here and that’s all that matters. You both walk inside the house and you don’t spot Joel anywhere. You hear some commotion and walk outside to see the pool filled with people. Makes sense, considering it was 100 degrees in Austin that day. You scan the pool and notice that Scotty and River are swimming together. ‘Damn it’ you think. You have been ghosting River ever since you had your first date. You weren’t sure how to end it exactly. Guess you’ll have to find out, he’s definitely going to try and talk to you. You continue scanning the pool and see a few of Sarah’s friends and Sarah being hoisted up out of the pool and thrown back in the water. You notice that it’s Joel that threw Sarah, he’s actually in the pool. It never would have crossed your mind that Joel swims. He’s up to his shoulders in the water, so you can’t see much. But his slicked back wet hair is making you feel butterflies. Sarah turns and notices you and your dad walk outside.
“Hey! Hop in!” She yells to you.
Joel quickly turns his head and makes eye contact with you. You take this chance to peel off your swimsuit cover and slowly step into the pool. You notice that Joel is trying not to look at you, but your bathing suit is making it difficult. You see his eyes scan from your chest down to your legs and back up before he tries to put his attention elsewhere.
“Hey, man” your dad says as he bends over the pool to give Joel a handshake.
Joel stands up and reaches to shake your dads hand. The water is now up to right above his waist. You see his stomach peeking out from the water and notice his broad chest.
“Let me get you a beer.” Joel says as he hoists himself up out of the pool.
You’re disappointed that Joel got out of the pool, you figured he would still be avoiding you. But watching him get out of the pool and the water drip down his body was worth it. His blue swim shorts clung to every part of him.
You swim for a bit on the other side of the pool before you notice River swimming up to you. Not really anywhere you could go, so you make eye contact with him and smile.
“So, I haven’t heard from you in a while.” River says.
“Yeah, sorry, there’s just been a lot going on.” You respond with a half smile.
There’s a moment of silence before he says, “Are you just… not interested in me anymore? I thought our date went really well. Until Joel showed up, at least.” Funny how about a month ago River didn’t even know who Joel was and now he’s swimming at his house.
“No, it’s not that. Listen, I shouldn’t have ghosted you. I just don’t think I’m ready for anything serious.” You respond.
“Who said it had to be serious? I’d be down to just fuck if that’s what you want.”
You roll your eyes. River definitely didn’t understand what you were trying to say. “I’m going to go get a drink.” You couldn’t be around River all night without a few drinks in your system.
You walk over to the pool steps and walk out. You turn to see if Joel is looking at you. He’s standing by the barbeque, now having changed out of his bathing suit and back into his usual shirt and jeans. He’s taking a sip of his beer while in conversation with your other neighbor, as he shifts his gaze to you. It was quick though, he doesn’t want to be seen staring. You take it as a good sign, you think. At least he’ll look at you.
You walk over to the cooler and take a beer from the ice chest. You open it and lay stomach down on a towel in the grass to start tanning. You begin tanning because, for one, your ass would be on display for Joel and two, you needed to get away from River and don’t feel like socializing. You lay on the grass for a while, every so often getting up to grab another beer. You then decide that you're done tanning. You stand up and look down at the bottles you’ve collected on the floor, only just realizing how much you’ve actually drunk. There’s 4 beer bottles on the floor and one still in your hand. You feel pretty tipsy, but you’re not complaining. As you're walking to go inside the house, you’re stopped by Mrs. Adler, your much older neighbor. She begins asking you questions about your life and boys and blah, blah. You look around to see Joel sitting at the table outside in conversation as well. He has a glass of whiskey in his hand. As you’re answering Mrs. Adler's myriad of questions, Joel’s eyes meet yours. To your surprise, he doesn’t look away. Not for a while. You think you even start to see a smirk forming on his face.
“Sorry, Mrs. Adler, I’ve just got to use the restroom.” You excuse yourself as you duck inside.
You enter the kitchen and take a deep breath. You hold yourself steady with your arms on the kitchen counter as you face the sink. It might be Joel looking at you, or the drinks you’ve had, but you feel flustered. You close your eyes.
“Are you okay?” You hear a hoarse voice ask from behind you.
You turn to see Joel standing there. You hadn’t heard him come in.
“Yeah, just a little tipsy is all.” You say while flashing a small smile. You lean your back against the counter and cross your arms, making your boobs pop out a bit. You didn’t mean for that to happen, you just felt awkward standing there with your hands to your side. Joel’s eyes flicker down to your chest and back up to your face.
“Have you been avoiding me?” You ask.
“Been tryin’ to. But it’s hard when you keep looking at me like you want something.” He says.
You take a small step closer to him. “I do. Want something.”
“Well what do you want, darlin’” he asks.
‘Darlin’, you’ve never heard him call you that and it almost makes you pass out. You take another step closer, arms still crossed and meet his gaze. “You” you bravely say.
Joel takes a deep breath, like he’s contemplating something. He turns his head to look out the window to the backyard. He turns back to you and grabs your wrists and motions to you to uncross your arms. His hand takes yours and he leads you upstairs.
When you reach the top of the stairs he ushers you into a bathroom and closes the door behind him. You look around to see a pink shower curtain, this must be Sarah’s bathroom. His body pushes against yours, causing your back to hit the counter near the sink. His hand meets the back of your neck and he kisses you deeply. He explores your mouth hungrily and like he’s in a hurry. When you moan into his mouth he wraps his hands around your thighs and lifts you to sit on top of the sink.
“You’re a naughty girl, aren’t you?” He whispers in your ear between kissing your neck. His hand grips your thigh as the other comes up to squeeze your chest.
“Please fuck me, Joel.” You say breathily as he is being totally consumed by you.
He pulls away from the kiss. “No, not now. I can’t do that.” You whimper at his release.
“But I can still make you feel good, baby.” He follows.
As you begin to wonder what he means, he quickly pulls down your bathing suit bottoms. He looks down at your bare pussy on display for him and experimentally rubs one finger around your clit. When you groan, he shushes you.
“Try to be quiet.” He says.
He then spreads your legs open wide and kneels down in front of you. You almost orgasm just at the sight of him on his knees for you. He lightly bites the inside of your thighs and gives your clit a few kisses before exploring your slit with his tongue.
“Oh, fuck” you moan. You tried to be quiet, you really did. It’s just impossible.
Joel pulls away and tells you to cover your mouth. You do as he says as he continues going down on you. He begins to focus his tongue on your clit when he pushes one finger inside of you, making you moan through your hand. You put your other hand in his hair and slightly tug at his curls. He inserts another finger and begins hitting that spot that makes you all gooey. He starts going dreadfully fast and tightening his grip on your thighs. You feel the heat in your stomach start to grow strong.
You remove your hand from your mouth quickly, “Fuck, Joel, I’m gonna cum.”
You put your hand back over your mouth, as you know you’re about to scream. You finally hit your release and moan through your hand. Joel feels your pussy clench and releases you. You take a moment to catch your breath as Joel stands up. You reach to undo his belt and he stops you.
“I want to make you feel good, too.” You say.
“It’s okay, baby. We don’t have time.”
You whimper and remove your hands. You think that a few more minutes wouldn’t make a difference, but you don’t want to argue with Joel. He sneaks his hands down the front of his pants to flip up his hard cock so no one can see his erection. He gives you a quick kiss before opening the door and ducking out into the hallway. You sit there, on the counter, still coming down from your high. That was the best orgasm of your life, and you plan to have him bring you to another one in the near future.
You come out to the backyard again, noticing that the sun is now setting and the party is winding down. Your dad, Joel and a few other people their age are sitting by the fire. You notice that Joel is sitting next to a married couple and your dad is sitting next to Tracy, a woman that lives in the cul-de-sac over from you. She is lightly touching his back. This throws you off, but you were too tired and too fucked to care right now. You look around to see Sarah and her friends still in the pool. And mostly everyone else has left, including River and Scotty. You walk up to your dad and lightly tap him on the shoulder before leaning down for a hug.
“I’m heading in, dad. Love you.”
He stays seated and hugs you back. “Okay, hun. Love you too.”
You walk away from the crowd sitting by the fire and peer back quickly to make eye contact with Joel. You both softly smile at each other before you head home.

CHAPTER 5
You don’t see Joel for two weeks after that. Not that you have been actively avoiding him or anything, but both your dad and Joel have been working like dogs so they haven’t planned a get together. Sarah is over most days though, just to hangout while she’s out of school for the summer. You’re not technically ‘babysitting’ her, you were never asked to, more so just spending time together. She keeps saying she is too old for a babysitter. You don’t think she is too old for one, but she is very mature for her age. I guess that’s why Joel lets her be in the house alone while he’s at work. It’s one day in the middle of June when it hits you. You were binge watching ‘Degrassi’ with Sarah at your house when you started to feel a knot in your stomach. You know this feeling all too well, but it hasn’t paid you a visit in a long while. When you were a teenager you began struggling with depression. It started to get better a couple years ago, but it still hits you sometimes. You think about why you’re feeling this way, if there is a reason. Then, you remember the date: June 17th. You knew there was something off about today, it’s the day your mother passed away 19 years ago. Gosh, that seems so long ago. It hurts even more not knowing entirely what you’re missing, you were only 3 when she passed.
You turn toward Sarah, “Hey, Bear, I’m not feeling too good. You think we can postpone this to another day?”
“Sure. Are you okay?” She asks.
“Yeah, I’m fine. Just a stomach bug.”
“Okay, feel better!”
Sarah gets up to go back home. Right after she leaves you turn the tv off and go upstairs. There’s a hole in your chest today, and you feel the need to desperately fill it. You take a shoe box out from under your bed that has mementos of her. You open to find her old hair tie, a few photos of you and her together, and her old necklace. Not much, but it’s the best you could do considering you were a toddler when she died. It was sudden, her death. A car accident on her way home from work. Your dad told you that you were at daycare, she was supposed to pick you up on her way home. You wished you had known that morning that you would never see her again, you would’ve given her a million hugs and kisses and said goodbye. You take out the pictures and lay on your bed. You look at them for a minute before holding them to your chest and beginning to cry.
You’re not sure how long you stayed in bed, crying, trying desperately to remember her. But it felt like forever. ‘I wish my dad were here’, you think. He always knows how to make you feel better. But he’s at work and you don’t know when he’ll get back. You pick up your phone and dial his number. The phone rings.
“Hello?” Your dad answers.
“Hey, dad. I’m, uh, I’m having a really hard time today.” You say sniffling through the phone.
“I know, hun. Me too. I miss her.”
You don’t even have to say why you’re having a hard time, he knows what today is. Maybe he didn’t mention it hoping you wouldn’t notice.
“When will you be home?” You ask.
“I don’t know, maybe around 8. I’m trying to get out of here as quickly as possible.”
You and your dad would always spend this day together every year, I guess with his new job he wasn’t able to get the day off.
“Okay.” You say softly.
“It’s okay, honey. Take deep breaths, drink water and cuddle with Obie until I get home. Call me again if you need me.”
“I love you, dad.”
“I love you too.”
You both hang up the phone.
You really did try what your dad suggested. The only thing that helped was cuddling with Obie. But he kept getting too hot cuddling and would jump off the bed. You cry yourself to sleep at some point and dream of her. You love your dreams, they always seem so vivid and real. You see your mom standing in front of you smiling. She reaches her hand to your face and touches your cheek, it’s almost like she’s actually touching you.
You jolt awake and realize that you actually do feel something on your cheek. You turn your head to see Joel a few inches away from you sitting on the edge of your bed, taking away his hand. He must’ve swiped away a tear with one of his thumbs while you were sleeping. You look around, it’s dark except for the dim light in your room. You have no idea what time it is.
“Joel? Why are you here?” You sit up in your bed.
“Your dad asked me to check on you, he’s stuck at work for about another hour.” He responds in a low voice. You’ve never heard him speak so softly.
You look around puzzled, “How did you get in?”
“He told me where the hide-a-key was.”
“Oh.” You respond. As you’re both just sitting on the bed, silence fills your ears. You’re not sure what to say. You’re not sure if he wants you to say anything.
He looks down at the pictures next to you on your bed, the pictures of your mom and you as a baby. He looks back up at you and pauses.
“I knew her, you know.” He says.
“Really?” You ask intently. Your dad must have told him what today was.
“Yeah, I met her when your dad and I were still in college. Your dad called me up one day and told me that I just have to meet this girl he’s been seeing. He told me he was going to marry her someday. I met her that night and, gosh, they were so in love. I knew after that he was going to. Marry her, I mean.” He kept his voice soft and comforting. You’ve never seen this side of Joel before.
“What was she like?” You ask, wanting to know more about her personality.
“Very outgoing, happy, and was super funny. She could even make me laugh.” He says smiling.
You chuckle at his description of her. A tear starts to roll down your cheek, you wish you had gotten to see her like this.
“Everyone liked her, no matter what.” He continues.
He pauses. “You two are similar in that way.”
You scoff. “Trust me, not everyone likes me. Not even you.”
“What do you mean?” He asks, cocking his head to the side.
“You hate me. It’s obvious.”
“I could never hate you.”
You both sit and look at each other for a second. You’re a bit confused, how he could act a certain way toward you then say this. It’s like he forgot to put on his protective mask or something.
You hesitate. “Can I ask you a question?”
He nods his head. “Sure.”
You hesitate again. “The, uh… picture of me…. in your wallet. Why do you have it?”
You hope to god you don’t regret asking this question. This could get very awkward.
“What picture?” He asks.
“The one in the back of your wallet, me on my graduation day.” You quickly clarify, “I wasn’t snooping, well maybe a bit… but Sarah asked me to get your bank card so we could order a pizza.”
He looks down at the floor for a moment before turning back to you.
“Your, uh, dad sent me it in the mail. He said he was so proud of you. I don’t know, you just looked so…” he looks to the side of you, trying to find the words.
“Beautiful, happy. I knew I wanted it to be with me wherever I go.” He meets your gaze.
“Do you… ever look at it?” You ask.
“Only when I’m having a bad day. Which seems to be a lot.” He answers half-smiling.
You sit there, hands in your lap, trying to process the words coming out of his mouth. Then you realize that he just called you beautiful, you didn’t even acknowledge it.
“Wait… you think I’m beautiful?” You ask looking back up at him.
“If I didn’t, I’d be an idiot.”
You decide, without giving it much thought, that you’re going to try to kiss him. You lean in slowly. When he notices you leaning in, he leans in response to meet your lips. It’s just a peck, at first. A small kiss. You attempt to pull away, as you’re getting no indication that he is enjoying this. When you’re about an inch from his face and he notices you pulling away, he puts his hand up to hold the side of your neck and pulls you back. It is then that he swipes your bottom lip with his tongue, as if to ask for permission. You allow him entrance and he explores your mouth with his tongue. It’s a gentle kiss at first, but then hunger starts to grow. He goes even deeper in your mouth, and bits your lip softly. You whimper quietly in his mouth in response. You want more. And you want it now. As he’s still kissing you, you reach your hand to place it on his knee. When he does not protest and continues exploring your mouth, you slowly move your hand higher and higher up his thigh. Right when you get to the bulge in his jeans, he pulls his mouth away abruptly.
“I have to go.” He says breathing heavily.
“What, why?” You pull your hand away.
He doesn’t answer, he just stands up and begins walking to your bedroom door.
“Joel!” You call out his name. He again does not answer and he slams the door behind him. You then hear him close the front door.
You sit there, confused and wanting more.

CHAPTER 4
You wake up Sunday morning to someone knocking on your bedroom door. You try to remember if you had another dream about Joel, like the past couple of nights. You hadn’t. A bit disappointing but you’re also relieved. “Come in”. You sit up in your bed
“Hey.” Your dad walks in the room and sits on the foot of your bed. “We missed you last night. Where did you go?”
You take a deep breath. “Joel hates me. And I think I’m beginning to hate him back.”
Your dad looks confused. “Why would you say that?”
“He never speaks to me, and when he does some rude shit always comes out of his mouth. He doesn’t treat me the same as you or Sarah.”
“Honey, he didn’t like me either when we first met. But now he’s my best friend. Just give it some time, he hardly knows you.” He replies.
“Okay.” You say. This conversation with your dad doesn’t give you any clarity, but you’re done talking about the topic. You’ve made up your mind, you’re done with being nice to Joel.
Your dad pauses for a moment. “Want me to talk to him?”
Your eyes widen. “Please, god, no.”
Your dad chuckles. “Okay, then.” He then walks out of your room and shuts the door behind him. You quickly shower and get ready for your date with River. He’s supposed to pick you up at 11 am. You decided to try to dress up. You know what they say, look your best, feel your best. You’re wearing a light blue sundress that brings out your eyes with brown sandals. Hopefully you don’t look like a little girl going to church. However, the dress is maybe a little too short, because you can see your small thigh tattoo poking out from the bottom of your dress. Your hair is curled and makeup looks great. You’re ready to distract yourself and have some good conversation.
You walk downstairs to see your dad grabbing his car keys and an energy drink from the fridge, looking like he is about to leave.
“Where are you going?” You ask.
“Work called, they have something wrong with their shipment.” He said, sounding annoyed. “I’m not even supposed to start until tomorrow and they’re already bothering me with this shit.”
“Well, I guess that’s what it means to be a manager.” You say back. Your dad was a carpenter back in California, he accepted a job as the manager of a flooring company when he decided he was going to move here.
“I guess. See you later, hun.”
“Bye, dad.” He walked out the door. You were a little surprised that he didn’t notice you were all dressed up and asked where you were going. But you’re not complaining, he would just be constantly texting you if he knew you were on a date. You take a seat on the couch and wait for Rivers ‘I’m outside’ text.
Your phone dings about 10 minutes later, and yup, it’s River saying he’s outside. Funny how you just assumed he wouldn’t come to your door, and you were right. You say bye to Obie and lock your front door. You look in your driveway to see a red truck. It looks a bit beat up, but not super old. You wave hello to him and hop in the passenger seat.
“You look great.” He says looking over at you.
Just as you say “thanks”, you notice he’s just wearing a white shirt and jeans. He’s not even dressed up, even though when asking River what you should wear on the date, he said “maybe something like a dress😍”. Boys are idiots. Whatever, you try to brush it off. At least you look really cute. Not that he doesn’t look cute, but your expectations were maybe a bit too high.
“So where are we going to brunch?” You ask him.
He begins reversing his truck out of the driveway. “There’s this spot down the street called Huckleberry’s. They have great brunch and mimosas.”
You chuckle at him. “I’m always down for a good mimosa.”
He smiles in response.
When he said down the street, he really did mean down the street. It only took like 5 minutes to get there. Which you were glad about because it saved you from most of the small talk on the drive over. You both walked in and grabbed a table.
Brunch went pretty good, you have to admit. You only had two mimosas and Belgian waffles. He scarfed down a whole breakfast plate. You two had good conversation, got past the small talk pretty quick and got into deep stuff. You shared about your dreams, going into grad school, what growing up was like, etc. You learned that he has one sister and two brothers, he goes to a community college nearby but plans to transfer to the university to pursue criminal justice and that he wants to be a police officer just like his dad. After learning all this stuff about him, you think that you like him a bit more than before. Before he was just a face, now he’s a face with a story. During brunch, he held your hand and you let him. It was nice to be touched. You hadn’t been touched since your last boyfriend, Jackson. You never really liked Jackson all that much, either, but he kept you from being lonely. Brunch went about two hours before you both decided it was time to leave.
River pulls into your driveway and puts his truck in park. He turns to you.
“That was a great time, thanks for hanging out with me.”
You blush. “I had a great time, too.”
“Um, can I… kiss you?” He asks hesitantly.
You think about it for a second before nodding your head ‘yes’.
He leans in to kiss you and you kiss him back. He slips his tongue into your mouth, but you wish he hadn’t. He shoves his tongue down your throat. ‘Does he even know how to makeout?’ You think to yourself. You agreed because you thought ‘what the hell’ but you’d rather be making out with Obie at this point.
You pull away before it can get any worse. There’s saliva all over your mouth and you put your arm up to your lips to wipe it off.
“I guess I’ll see you later.” You say putting on a fake smile.
“No, wait. Let me walk you up.” River says quickly.
You let him, it’s the most gentlemanly thing he’s done all day.
He gets out of the truck and you both walk up the short path to your front door. You turn to face him to say goodbye.
Just as he leans in for another kiss, you think you’re saved when River stops abruptly. Until you realize why River stopped. You turn to follow where River is looking and see Joel standing a few feet from you on the sidewalk. He’s standing with his arms crossed like some suburban mom. He’s staring at you like usual, completely silent. When Joel realizes you see him, he walks up to meet you both on the porch step.
“Who are you?” Joel asks River harshly, completely ignoring your existence.
“Um, I-I’m River.” He reaches out his hand, “Nice to meet you, sir.”
Joel looks down at his hand and back up to his face, clearly dismissing his attempt for a handshake.
“Sir?” Joel asks.
“Uh, yeah?” River turns to you. “Isn’t this your dad?”
You let out a small huff of air in amusement. “No. No, he’s not my dad.”
“Get the fuck out of here, kid.” Joel says motioning his hand toward River’s truck.
River looks at you, as if he is scared, and says “I’ll, uh, s-see you later.” He practically fast walks to his truck and pulls away.
You turn to Joel. “What the fuck?”
Joel has his arms crossed again staring at you. He says nothing while you wait for an answer.
“Why do you keep telling me what to do? You don’t even know me!” You shout.
He uncrosses his arms. “Because I know your dad isn’t here and I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t like you fucking a scrawny little boy in his house!” He raises his voice back.
You’re taken aback by his accusation. You scoff, “Fucking? I don’t even like him! He was just saying goodbye.”
“Don’t lie to me, I saw you two making out in his truck and then you both just coincidentally walk up to the house? Bullshit.”
“What do you care anyways?” You ask with your arms crossed now.
He looks at you and doesn’t answer.
“The only fucking around here is fucking aggravating, and it’s you.” You don’t give him a chance to speak. You bolt inside and slam the door.
You walk inside and head straight for the couch. You couldn’t even make it all the way upstairs because you were so pissed. You sit on the couch and put your knees to your chest. You’re so angry, this guy sure has the balls. Joel just likes to boss people around, you think. He’s controlling. Just because he saw you and River making out… wait. Joel saw you making out. Did your dad put him up to this? But your dad didn’t even know you were going on a date. It couldn’t be that. You begin to wonder if Joel saw River pick you up and waited until you both got back on purpose. Why was he watching you so closely? After pondering for a little while, you attempt to shut that thought out of your brain. The thought that Joel actually cares about you. Thinking that he cares about you will only make you more hurt when he’s an asshole to you like usual.
You go about your day, watching movies in sweats and making brownies. Your dad is still nowhere to be seen. He should be home from work soon. As you finish watching ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ on cable TV, there’s a knock at your front door. You open the door to find Sarah standing on your porch.
“Sarah? What’s up?” You ask.
“Hi! Do you want to come over and watch a movie with me?”
You check your phone, 7:30 PM. “It’s getting late, don’t you have school tomorrow?”
“School's out for the summer!” She says excitedly. “I officially do not have a bedtime.”
“Oh, then sure that sounds fun. Is it okay with your dad though?” You want to make sure you don’t piss Joel off even more today.
“Yeah he said as long as we don’t make much noise. He’s already getting ready for bed anyways since he has to be up super early for work.”
“We’ll, let’s go then.” You say smiling.
You and Sarah walk across the street over to her house. You both walk in and sit on the couch to pick a movie. Joel’s nowhere in sight, he must be upstairs. You prefer not to see him anyways.
“Want to watch Mean Girls?” Sarah asks, holding the remote in her hand.
“Hell yeah! It’s a classic.” You just finished watching a movie back at your place, but you don’t care. You love watching movies.
About a quarter through the movie, as you’re both lounging on the sofa, Sarah says your name.
“Are you hungry?” She asks.
“I could eat. What do you want to get?”
“Pizza?”
“Sounds good.”
Sarah points to the kitchen counter, “You get my dads card and I’ll call the pizza place.”
“Are you allowed to use his card?” You ask.
“Yeah, he doesn’t care.”
‘If you say so’ you think. You get up and walk over to the kitchen counter. You see a ring of keys and a brown wallet laying on the counter. You open the wallet to see a bunch of cards and his license. He looks just as cold in his license picture as he does in real life.
“Which card is it?” You call over to Sarah.
“The blue one, in the front.” She responds.
You see the blue card and carefully pull it out. As you’re pulling out the card, it reveals a small sliver of paper in the back of the wallet. You’re curious what the paper is. You look at Sarah quickly to make sure she isn’t paying attention. She is googling the phone number to the pizza place on her phone. You turn your attention back to the wallet and slowly pull out the piece of paper. Only it’s not a piece of paper. It’s a small picture. ‘It must be a picture of Sarah’ you think. You pull it out all the way and hold it in your fingers. Your heart drops. It’s a picture of you. On your college graduation day. You're smiling big, holding your diploma and wearing a black gown and cap. How did he get this picture? More importantly, why is it in his wallet? You barely have time to process what’s in front of you before you hear Sarah calling your name. You quickly put the picture back, close his wallet, and bring the card over to her. You think about that picture in his wallet the rest of the night.

The thing is, he is moving from California to Texas to live next to his best friend/college roommate, Joel, along with his daughter, Sarah. Growing up, you heard so much about him from your dad. It’s almost like you know Joel, but you don’t. You’ve never actually met him. This Summer will be interesting…
Warnings/Tags: Dbf! Joel, slow burn, eventual smut, kinda mean Joel, explicit language, references to death, struggles with depression, reader is younger than Joel (22/43).
Note: This chapter is a bit short. I wrote the smut for a few chapters in just because I was in the mood and LET. ME. TELL. YOU. its 🥵🔥 I almost regret making this a slow burn. Sorry😂
Chapter 1
Chapter 2
CHAPTER 3
You stir awake in your bed from a dream you just had. You don’t remember a lot of the dream, but you remember tasting Joel’s mouth. It tasted sweet yet bitter at the same time. Like a vanilla coffee almost. You wish you could remember more of the dream. You reach for your phone to look at the time, 8:47 am. You lay your phone down back on the nightstand and drop your head against your pillow. You take a deep breath contemplating getting up out of bed to get ready for the day. But there’s something holding you back, a feeling you can’t seem to get rid of. You move your legs around to try to ease the tension in the spot that’s craving it most. That dream about Joel has you soaked in between your legs and you don’t even remember most of it. You reach down to ease the ache and begin circling your clit. You don’t even care if it’s weird you’re masturbating to the thought of Joel, all you can think about is what his face looks like when he’s being pleasured. His face turning from stone cold like it always is to that of eroticism. What he would sound like moaning or whispering praises in your ear. You decide that circling your clit is not enough and open your bedside table to get your vibrator. Your vibrator gets the job done fast and you cum thinking of Joel fucking you from above. You sit there for a while post orgasm and the feeling of shame creeps up on you. You don’t know what’s wrong with you, you’re so hot for this man but he’s a total asshole. He hates you. You swear to yourself that you’ll never cum thinking of him again, even if that was the best orgasm of your life.
You get ready and pick up Sarah to go to the grocery store together. The dads are cooking tonight after game night so it was your responsibility to get all the groceries. You and Sarah are in the fruit and vegetable aisle looking for chives. As you’re looking for them, Sarah points to just out of your peripherals and says “found them.” “Sweet.” You say as you open up a plastic bag to put them in and get going.
“Hi, Scotty” you hear Sarah say while giggling and twirling her hair. You look behind you to see Scotty and another boy, you think it’s the same boy from the barbeque. Scotty hears his name and turns toward Sarah. “Oh, hey.” He says. “This is my friend River. River these are my neighbors”. He gestures to his friend. You and Sarah both say a polite hello and initiate some small talk about how the barbecue was and the weather.
“Well, we better not keep our dads waiting.” You try to shut down the conversation politely.
“Alright, see you around.” Scotty says and begins to walk away. But his friend hesitates. River scoots a bit closer to you and says smiling “Hey, I was wondering if I could have your number? I think you’re beautiful.”
You pause for a moment. What the heck, not like you have any other offers. The boy was cute but not exactly your type. He had short brown hair and dimples. He looked a little young for your taste, but you knew he was only a year younger than you.
“Sure.” You say typing your number in his phone. You smile at him. “See you around.”
“See you around”, he walks away to catch up with Scotty.
The whole ride home consisted of Sarah being super excited that River likes you. Lots of “he’s so cute!” And “you guys would make a great couple!” You tried to share Sarah’s excitement, you really did, but it was difficult when you really didn’t care about it much.
You bring the groceries inside your house and clean until it’s time for the Millers to come over. They come over around 4 PM and Sarah barges in without even a knock, Joel following behind her. She runs to Obie “I missed you, bubba!”
Joel walks in with a six pack of beer in his hand and shuts the door behind him. “Sarah, knock on the damn door before barging in.” He says. Joel is wearing a blue denim shirt and jeans, but you can tell he just showered due to his wet combed back hair.
She looks at him, “Sorry.”
You walk up to Obie and start petting him with her, “He missed you, too” you say to Sarah. She smiles.
Your dad opens the door to the garage and walks in. “Hey, Miller.” He goes to shake Joel’s hand. “You look like shit.” He says to Joel jokingly.
“Not if you ask Taylor Pattinson.” Joel responds laughing.
Your dad lets out a big belly laugh and pushes Joel’s shoulder. He turns to you, “Taylor Pattinson was a girl I was seeing in college that cheated on me with Joel.”
“That’s fucked up.” You reply.
“I didn’t know she was dating him.” Joel sticks up for himself.
Is this how men joke around with each other? It’s pretty disgusting. You decide you’ve heard enough and walk away to sit on the couch, Sarah follows you.
The game portion of the night went by alright. All four of you played Monopoly (your dad won), Hedbanz (Joel won, even though he refused to put the card and headband on his head) and Scrabble (Sarah won). You don’t mind not winning any of the games, you’re not competitive, you just like having fun. During all of the games you saw Joel smile a bit, but he never looked at you. He never even interacted with you when playing the games. He avoided you altogether and you can tell because he purposely did not buy any of your properties on Monopoly or answer your questions during Hedbanz. It didn’t annoy you, until you noticed how he interacted with your dad and Sarah so effortlessly. He even cracked jokes with them. Even though you were playing all the games, you felt left out.
After the games were done the dads went outside to begin grilling the meat on the grill. You just plop yourself down to lay on the couch as you simultaneously look at your phone and talk to Sarah. You notice that River has texted you.
River: Hey, would you be interested in going out with me tomorrow? Brunch date?
You purposely don’t respond to him, you’re not sure if you want to go out with him. Just then as you’re thinking about if you’re going to reply, Sarah throws one of Obie’s toy footballs at you and Obie jumps up on you following it. He then ignores the football completely and begins licking you all over your face. You begin laughing hysterically while trying to get him off you. “Obie, stop!” Sarah is now laughing with you. You don’t see how Joel looks through the sliding glass door smiling at the sight of you.
“Dinners ready!” Your dad exclaims. “Meat and potatoes, hope you’re hungry.”
Both your dad and Joel walk in carrying plates of food and set it on the dining table. Your dad walks to the garage to get paper plates. You get up from your seat and open the fridge. Joel is right next to the fridge cutting the steak into pieces and sipping his beer. You reach for a beer and take it out, as you twist the top open Joel looks at you.
“What?” You ask.
“You shouldn’t be drinking.” He says as he takes the beer out of your hand.
“Why?” You ask offended.
“Because you’re just a kid.” He says harshly, setting your beer on the counter.
“I’m 22 years old, I’m literally an adult.” You huff back at him.
“Well, you sure don’t act like it.” He says back while narrowing his eyes at you.
You take a pause and cross your arms.
“Fuck you, Joel.” You storm upstairs skipping dinner entirely.
You throw yourself on your bed. What a fucking asshole. Who is he to tell you what to do, you’re a whole ass legal adult who can drink. Anger grows in your veins. ‘That’s it, fuck that guy, I don’t care if he likes me’ you think to yourself. I'm done trying to get on his good side. You take your phone out of your pocket and tap on River’s message.
You: Let's do it. What should I wear?

Chapter 1
CHAPTER 2
You’re sitting on the passenger side of a truck. You’re not sure who’s truck it is, the inside interior is gray and it looks to be pretty old. You look out the window to see a sunset. You don’t remember it being that late in the afternoon and you don’t remember ever getting in a truck. You must be parked because the truck isn’t moving. It was then that you feel a soft brush on your hand. You whip your head to the driver's seat to see Joel looking at you with his hand on top of yours. “Joel?” You ask. “What are we doing here?” He says nothing. He just scoots closer to you, now sitting in the middle seat. He still has your hand in his and he slowly brings it to his cheek. Your breath starts to get shaky feeling his warm skin and scratchy facial hair against your palm. He never breaks eye contact with you, even as he brings your palm to his mouth and places a small kiss to the center of it. You then hear your name being called loudly, but Joel’s mouth isn’t moving. You hear it again and are startled awake. You open your eyes to find yourself lying in your bed, alone. ‘God damn it’ you think to yourself. ‘That was a bit weird’. But you feel a dampness between your legs. Do you want to fuck Joel?
You hear your name being shouted a third time from downstairs, the voice sounding like your dad. “What!” You yell back to him. You sit up in your bed waiting for a response but, in typical parent fashion, he now grows quiet and does not respond to you. You huff in annoyance and pull yourself out of bed to see what he wants. You're only wearing a baggy black t-shirt and underwear, so you slip on some pajama shorts to head downstairs. As you reach the last step you see your dad on his phone leaning against the kitchen island. “What time is it?” You ask.
“It’s 11 am, sleeping beauty. What were you up all night doing?” He asks. You don’t usually sleep in this late, but you knew today would be a Sunday and you needed some rest.
“Talking to Larry, she was asking about all the details of the move.” You say as you reach to open the cupboard to grab a mug. Larry (Larissa) was your best friend from back home. She was the only one who you dreaded leaving.
“Well tell Larissa I say hello.”
“I will, dad.” You place the mug under the coffee machine and press the button.
“What were you calling me for?” You turn around to face your dad and lean against the kitchen counter waiting for your coffee to brew.
Just then you hear a click from the door right next to the kitchen, the bathroom door. Just as you’re beginning to wonder who it could be, Joel comes out. Your heart drops. You didn’t expect Joel to be here and you’re not sure if you should pretend like he’s not there or say something. Damn, he looks good. He’s wearing a black t-shirt that outlines his muscles, blue jeans and brown boots. He walks over and sits on the barstool on the other side of the island and looks at you.
“Joel and I just got back from getting my new car!” Your dad says excitedly.
You turn to look at your dad, “Really? That’s awesome. What kind of car?”
Your dad looks to the side as if he’s trying to remember something. “Shit, I forgot already. You know I’m not a car guy.”
“It’s a white 2023 Honda civic. Nothing special.” Joel answers for your dad. You begin to wonder if Joel is a car guy. As you’re nodding your head as if to say ‘oh, cool’ you notice Joel is looking down at your legs. Now you’re very aware that all you have on is a baggy t-shirt and very short shorts. You start to get a bit shy at the thought of Joel looking at you. “I’ll come look at it later, gotta start getting ready”. You grab your cup of coffee and rush upstairs. A piece of you wonders if Joel turned to look at your ass as you walked upstairs. You doubt it, he hasn’t shown any signs that he even likes you as a person, let alone that he’s interested in you.
The whole day today is spent unpacking, setting up the living room and your room. You hate living in an empty house, so you want to make it feel like home as much as possible. Your dad is gone all day, presumably running errands with Joel or something. But you prefer him out of the house so he isn’t in your way. Around 5 PM, as you’re just finishing unpacking your closet, your dad texts you.
Dad🤓: I was talking to Joel about Sarah needing a ride to school all of this week. I offered on your behalf, hope you don’t mind kiddo.
You: Sure, that’s fine. Won’t you be taking the car to work though?
Dad🤓: I’m not starting work until next week. You can take the car.
You: So you could’ve taken her.
Dad🤓: Thought it would be a good opportunity for you and her to get to know each other. I’ll be home in time for dinner.
You toss your phone on the bed and continue unpacking. You really don’t mind dropping Sarah off at school all week, it’s not like you have anything else to do besides unpacking. You spend the whole rest of the Sunday unpacking and eating takeout with your dad.
Monday morning your alarm starts blaring. You turn it off and look at the time, 7:30 am. Ugh. You take a few minutes to get dressed and brush your teeth before walking across the street to knock on the Millers door. You know Joel is at work this early, so you aren’t worried about having to awkwardly see him. Sarah answers the door with her backpack already over her shoulder.
“Ready?” You ask.
“Yeah, thank you for the ride.” She says.
“Of course.”
“Can Obie come with us?” She asks.
“Hmm, I don’t think my dad would like it if Obie was in his brand new car.”
“Please! He doesn’t have to know.” She says as she attempts to give you puppy dog eyes and a pouty lip.
“Fine. But tell no one!” You say smiling. You run to your house to get Obie and load him in the car.
You and Sarah are driving to her school, which is about 15 minutes away. You unlock your phone and hand it to her to let her choose the music to play. She puts on some Taylor Swift.
“How did you know I love Taylor Swift?” You asked surprisingly.
“I didn’t! She’s just one of my favorites!” Sarah says smiling.
“I wonder what else we have in common.” She taps her finger to her chin as if she’s thinking of something. “What’s your favorite animal?” She asks eventually.
“Dog. It’s a given.” You answer. “You?”
“Bear.” She says.
“A bear? Why?” You take your eyes off the road for a second to look at her.
“Because people call me Sare Bear.”
“That’s the only reason it’s your favorite animal?” You ask as you begin to chuckle.
She laughs, “Don’t make fun of me! I like the nickname and the animal!”
“Fair enough.” You say laughing. “From now on I shall call you Bear.”
“Great!”
You arrive at Sarah’s school and drop her off.
She closes the door and you roll down the passenger window. “Your dads picking you up right?” You ask to make sure.
“Yeah, he is.”
“Okay, see you later!”
“Bye! Bye, Obie!” She waves to your dog.
The rest of the week goes exactly the same. You wake up at 7:30, knock on Sarah’s door and drive her to school. You hate to admit it, but you actually have a lot in common with 12 year old Sarah Miller. Not sure if that means you are immature or she is very mature. Either way, you two start to get close. Like every other day, you wake up and head to the Miller's house. It’s Friday today, the last day you will have to drop Sarah off at school. You knock on the door and wait for Sarah to answer. After about 30 seconds go by and no answer, you knock again. It is then the door swings open. It’s Joel, standing there in his blue flannel pajamas, black shirt and coffee mug in hand. His hair looks all disheveled, as if he just woke up a few minutes ago. You both look at eachother. You could tell he wasn’t expecting you as he cocks his head to the side as if to say ‘what are you doing here?’ He then has a realization that you were supposed to drop Sarah off today.
“Shit” he says. “I forgot to tell you that I don’t work until later today so I can drop Sarah off.”
You give him a half smile, “Oh, it’s okay.”
He just looks at you as you stand there awkwardly, waiting for you to leave.
“Oh, uh, I can still drop her off. If you want.”  You offer.
“I couldn’t ask you to do that.” He responds.
“Really, it’s fine. I’m already awake anyways.” You say as you shrug your shoulders.
He thinks for a second. “Sure”. He opens the door wider and steps to the side to give you room to walk in.
You take a few steps in as he shuts the door behind you.
“Sarah should be down in a minute. Coffee?” He asks.
“I’m alright, thanks.” You take a seat at the dining table.
He leans back against the kitchen counter, as if he’s just waiting, sipping his coffee. “Thanks. For taking her this week.” He says but does not turn his head to look at you. It’s almost as if it pains him to say something nice to you.
“No problem, she’s a great girl.” You answer.
He responds with a low ‘mhm’. And continues staring across the room while he sips his coffee. You look around awkwardly in silence.
“Not a man of many words, huh?” You say jokingly trying to break the silence.
He says nothing, almost as if he wasn’t even listening to what you said.
Just then, Sarah walks down the stairs and sees you.
“Hey! You’re still taking me today?” Sarah asks.
“Hey, Bear. Yeah, I am.” You say standing up.
She walks over to Joel to give him a hug. He kisses her on the head and says “Bye, honey”. He doesn’t say bye to you. And you don’t say bye to him. You both just walk out the front door.
You drop Sarah off and spend the rest of the day wondering what you did to make him not like you. Even when you did him a favor by dropping Sarah off at school all week. Did you give off a bad first impression? Insult him in some way? Does he find you annoying? Your mind wanders. It’s starting to eat at you that Joel Miller hates you. Your dad mentioned a game night at your house this Saturday with the Millers. That’s tomorrow, you realize. You’re now dreading tomorrow. It’ll probably be awkward and uncomfortable. This seems to be what every interaction you have with Joel is like.

Note: I am a very inexperienced writer, but wanted to have some fun. Go easy on me! Chapters will probably be short and come out fast because I have ADHD lol. And yes, Obie is named after Oberyn Martell from GOT 😂.
CHAPTER 1
“Obie!” You yell out your back door. “Come, boy.” Your golden retriever comes running in the house. You always referred to Obie as ‘the only man you need in your life’. Although, that is definitely not true because you couldn’t live without your dad, it sums up your attachment to your dog. You close the backdoor and turn to look around the empty house with a leash in your hand. It’ll be weird to live somewhere not in this house, you have lived here since you were born. It saddens you when you realize that this was the last house your mother stepped foot in. Any houses after this one will be void of her presence. You take a deep breath and walk up to Obie, clasping his leash to his collar. You open the front door to meet your dad who is waiting in the U-Haul with all of your belongings combined. You usher Obie up into the front seat of the truck and have him sit between you and your dad. You close the door and let out a sigh. Your dad turns to you and puts his hand on your shoulder. “You okay, hun?” You look over to him. “Yeah, just ready to get this drive over with”. You reply. It was partly true, you were dreading the 20 hour drive. But you purposefully didn’t mention your true feelings. “Well let’s get going then”. Your dad pulls out from your childhood home and begins to drive to his new one.
The drive wasn’t horrible. One motel stay, multiple potty breaks for Obie, listening to podcasts and eating a bunch of junk food. You finally reach the neighborhood the new house is in. Your dad pulls into a cul-de-sac and points to a green two-story house on the left side. “This is her,” he says, pulling into the driveway. “Looks pretty nice, I think she’ll do” You respond “Which house is Joels?” You didn’t really care much, but the whole reason your dad wanted to move here in the first place was to be next to his so-called best friend Joel Miller. You’ve never met the guy, but you don’t really care to particularly. Your dad always talked about him so much growing up, you feel like he’s your long-lost uncle or something. You supposedly met him once when you were 3 years old at your mother’s funeral. You obviously don’t remember, you know, being 3 and having better things to worry about like your mom being dead. Your dad always told you the story of how he and Joel met: it was their freshman year at college at the University of Texas, Austin, and they were random roommates. They became best friends and were inseparable until your dad met your mom and moved to Los Angeles. Since you were looking at schools in the Texas area and were accepted to UT for your graduate program, your dad thought it would be a good idea to move with you so you can stay at home. Also, so your dad could have someone he cares about, other than you, close. He's been lonely since your mom died but he won’t admit it. You agreed, because worst case scenario, you save money by living at home with your dad.
“His is the one right across the street”. Your dad points behind you both, behind the U-Haul. You look over your shoulder and see a white house with no cars in the driveway. It looked like no one was home. “Joel’s at work, but should be off around 6 in time for the barbeque.” Your dad continues. You look at him puzzled, “what barbeque?” “The cul-de-sac is throwing us a welcome barbeque tonight”. He looks at you smiling. “Ugh, now after driving half the day I have to go put on makeup to meet some people I don’t know”. You were exhausted, you wished you could just go in and go to sleep. But there wasn’t even a bed inside, lots of unloading to do. Obie begins to whine, signaling he wants to be let out. “Oh come on, you’ll be fine” Your dad exclaims. You open the door to the U-Haul to let Obie out and head towards your new home.
4 ½ hours and lots of sweating later, you’re finally done getting ready for the barbeque and moving your stuff. Your room is hardly set up, with just a bed in the middle. But you don’t care, it can wait until tomorrow. You’re wearing blue jean shorts, a black tank top and flip flops. Not trying to impress anyone too bad here. Besides, it’s May in Texas, so it’s pretty hot. But you have your hair down and makeup on so you look like you at least tried. You look at your phone, it’s 6:30 PM. Your dad left to help set up the barbecue an hour ago and said he would be back. He must’ve ran into Joel and begun reminiscing or something. You take it upon yourself to make an appearance just to make your dad happy. “Obie, come on” You walk down the stairs and usher Obie outside the front door with you.
You close the front door and look around the cul-de-sac. The first thing you notice being the loud country music and the smell of hotdogs. There’s two tables set up with a red patterned tablecloth in the middle of the cul-de-sac. They have hotdogs, burgers and condiments on them. There’s multiple ice chests and chairs everywhere. You think everyone in the cul-de-sac must be here, because they are blocking off the road. There are quite a few people here, obviously no one you recognize. You decide to take a walk around and explore more. “Let’s go, Bubba”. Obie follows you as you walk down the sidewalk deeper into the party. You see a blue ice chest labeled ‘water’ and open it up to take a cold water bottle. Right as you’re done taking a swig, you hear someone ask “what’s his name?” You look over to see a girl, motioning toward your dog. Though you could tell she is younger, a teen maybe, she is almost your height. You smile and say “oh, this is Obie”. “Can I pet him?” The girl asks. “Of course, he’s a sweet boy”. You say. She leans down and rubs him on the head, “Hi, Obie” she says to him. She stands back up and introduces herself to you “I’m Sarah. You’re John’s daughter, right?” You look at her puzzled. “Yeah, how do you know my dad?” You reply. “Because Joel’s my dad”. She says. “Ohhh, duh. Sorry”. You feel a little stupid due to the fact that you forgot Joel had a daughter. You introduce yourself back to Sarah. “I guess we’re basically like, cousins, or something” She says laughing. “I guess so”, you give a small chuckle back. She looks over your shoulder, “he’s super cute, huh?” Pointing behind you. You look over to see a blondish boy with his friend, throwing a football back and forth to each other. You look back to Sarah. “Sure, but they look a bit old for you. How old are you, Sarah?” You ask. “I’m 12, he’s 21. His name is Scotty”. She replies. You widen your eyes at the response, thinking the girl was around 15. “It’s just a crush, he doesn’t even know I exist. But still, please don’t tell my dad” Sarah says. “Of course,” You say smiling. “Does Obie need some water?” Sarah asks. You look down at Obie, who is panting severely. “It is a bit hot, maybe I should get him some”. You exclaim. “Don’t worry, we’re closer to my house, we can just get it there. Let me just double check with my dad that it’s okay”. Her house is equal distance to your house, but you write it off as Sarah being excited to show you her house. Sarah motions for you to follow her, so you do.
You walk a few steps to the table with the food sprawled across it. You notice your dad on the end getting a hotdog with a man beside him, both of them laughing. Sarah walks up to the man, who is scooping relish onto his hotdog. You and Obie stand beside her. “Dad?”  She tries to get his attention, but he keeps his back turned to her. “Yeah?” The man says. “Can we go inside the house for a second?” She asks. “Who is we?” He asks as he turns toward her with the hotdog in his hand. He looks at her, then his eyes cross over to yours. It is only then you notice how handsome the man is. He looks rugged, but has soft eyes. His patchy beard and wavy, salt and pepper hair tell you this man is somewhere in his forties. He’s wearing a green button up flannel with the sleeves rolled up. Your breath catches as he looks at you blankly and puts the plastic spoon he was using to scoop relish with in his mouth to suck off the excess. Sarah introduces you to the man, all the while he doesn’t break eye contact. “We were just going to get her dog some water real quick”. Sarah says. The man then looks down at Obie and back up to you. He then takes the spoon out of his mouth. Your dad then appears, he puts his hand on the man’s shoulder and says “Joel, this is my daughter.” You knew Sarah’s dad was Joel, but for some reason it did not connect that this man in front of you was Joel. You give Joel a pathetic little “Hi”. He responds back, “Hi.” Then turns his attention back toward Sarah. “Go ahead” he gives Sarah permission. Sarah starts to walk excitedly toward her house. You and Obie follow her, still eyeing the man as he turns back toward your dad to say something. He seems a bit rude, you think to yourself. He didn’t say ‘nice to meet you’ or introduce himself. And his eye contact was very strong, it made you feel a bit uncomfortable. Not the warm welcome you expected, but you try to brush it off.
You, Sarah and Obie go inside the house. She grabs a bowl from the cabinet and fills it up with water. She lays it on the floor. While Obie drinks the water sloppily, you ask “hey, is your dad always like that? You know…” You struggle to find the words to describe his presence. “Cold?” Sarah takes the word right out of your mouth. “Yes! Cold. Is he always so cold to everyone?” You specify. It leaves you surprised that Joel is coming off this way, because your dad is so nice and outgoing. You ask yourself how they could be best friends with such different personalities. She replies, “Yeah, basically everyone. Except me, my uncle Tommy, and your dad”. “Everyone else he is pretty cold to, but some people he just has a soft spot for”. Sarah continues. It begins to make sense in your mind, how Joel could be laughing with your dad one second then giving you a death stare the next. “Oh, okay”. You say as you try to drop the subject.
You don’t know why, but you begin to wonder what it would take for Joel to have a soft spot for you, or how different he might act towards you. You think back to him laughing with your dad, how his dimple appeared out of nowhere. How unguarded he looked. You began to wish that it was you he was laughing with, not your dad. From this point on, you make it your goal to be one of Joel’s soft spots.

How about when people call you “Daddy”? It’s sweet.  Oh, sweet.  Isn’t that - uh - sexy talk?  I think it means sexy talk.  Yeah. (x)
