This is something I have been holding on to for many years. It was from an old craft kit from 1999. I think it’s worth posting for late 90s and early 2000s nostalgia.

My parents have these craft books from the 70s which I used to flip through growing up. This is a cursed image from the doll section called "Rag-Doll Furniture".
I was browsing the doll aisle and noticed the Route 707 tots and the fashion packs being marked as super clearance and still didn't seem to be selling.
I noticed recently the line has been moving away from original dolls and more towards gimmicks (water balloon hair, face swaps, DIY cake dress) and brand tie-ins (Mini Bites, Mini Sweets, Crayola, FIFA, Hello Kitty).
It does feel like a mix of running out of ideas and maybe customers losing interest. And it could be possible it might get to a point where all the dolls end of being brand tie-ins.
However, I never really understood why they never did a fantasy line. They had characters dressed like mermaids but why not make a mermaid body mold? Or fairies? Or anthro characters (animal head with human body)? Or characters with fantasy skin colors? People liked to customize the dolls, so why not make dolls crafts kits for that similar to what they did with Rainbow High.
If they want to just keep reusing pre-established characters, why not make a line of surprise balls with plushies?
I remember back in 2022, there were a lot of dolls on shelves but not a lot of them being sold off. Now in 2023, going to clearance and discount stores and seeing them full of 2022 releases. There was a lot that came out during that year and I wonder if the Average Joan just got fatigue.
I do wonder about the sales of 2023 releases. If they sold poorly, that might have been the ultimate deciding factor to just reboot the brand.
I am far more bothered by Mr. Rotter being based off the Phantom of the Opera (1925) and co-existing in the same universe as Operetta. Yet they aren’t related.
”ugh Monster High clearly doesn’t know what the phantom of the opera is about” yes because it’s take on Dracula Frankenstein the Wolfman the Mummy Medusa Jekyll and Hyde the Gilman the Invisible man etc are well known for being accurate and getting the point
Here is my Neighthan Rot with a partial reroot using a @customdollhairAU rainbow pack, redressed in a Shadow High Mara Pinkett shirt and jacket and Neighthan's original pants with the graphic section replaced with a new fabric.
I do like exploring how to shift a doll's looks without having a set design in mind because it can lead to fun dolls like this.
