this poll is for all writers, including those that might fall outside the typical online writing sphere (poetry writers, non-fiction writers, etc). also if you write fanfic choose the genre that's closest to what you write!

fanfiction writers are real writers.
fanfiction stories are real stories.
writing fanfiction is different than writing original fiction, yes. in some ways that can make things easier, having an established universe to riff off of. in some ways it can be harder, trying to maintain prior characterization, create realistic source deviation, or work with prior canon choices made by someone other than yourself. creating transformative works comes with its own unique skill set that needs to be mastered.
you are a writer if you write, no matter what genre. don't let elitist fucks tell you what to do.

you know a niche thing i fucking hate? ppl in fandom over whatever arbitrary age they deem "old" giving themselves the title "fandom elders" and then using this meaningless title to talk down to teenagers/any fan that they think is younger than them.
like i'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but age =/= wisdom. just because you had to crawl through the trenches of whatever half-functional fansite you grew up on doesn't mean you're automatically warranted respect - especially not when you treat younger fans like dogshit.
and this is not a dig at anyone who's "older" in fandom - it's a dig at anyone who uses their age and inferred authority as a way to justify being a rude, crotchety bitch with no sense of decency.

these tags are being used as an example of how a lot of people are fundamentally misunderstanding the purpose of this post.
so many people are adding tags like "but don't send the creator the weird content!" or "but don't cross the creator's boundaries!" and i'm here to tell you that a creator's boundaries and a fan's proclivities for transformative content are not mutually exclusive.
fans can make disturbing fan content and - guess what! - not send it to the creators! the creation of content does not necessitate that the creator of the content be informed, or seek it out themselves, because creators are actual human beings and deserve not to be harassed or subjected to content they would rather not see.
plenty of creators, as well as other individuals (like online personalities, actors, etc) have expressed their boundaries in ways that do not demonize fans for creating fanworks.
this post is not about invalidating the feelings of creators or shaming them for having boundaries, but it is urging those creators to set and maintain those boundaries without bashing their fanbase for being a fanbase. in the tags above a user is discussing how fans can consistently harass a creator in dms or other online spaces. i'm here to say that creator can establish their boundaries by using the block button, tag filters, and a plethora of other online tools to help curate their online space to help limit those interactions which may not align with the creator's desired boundaries.
can some fans be jackasses? yes, absolutely. but demanding, for instance, that no one can write fanfiction for your original work (anne rice), or that no one can ever create nsfw with your characters (etc etc), does not create an open and inviting space for fans and creators to interact. demanding that nothing be made at all insinuates that you, as a creator, have the power and authority to dictate what other people are allowed to create - and creators have no say in dictating how transformative works are made. that's why they are transformative. trying to dictate their creation will only alienate your fanbase.
so when i say that creators need to get comfortable with the rules of the internet, i don't mean "throw away your own feelings and deal with it." i mean "come to terms with your discomfort, and take steps to mitigate it."
at the end of the day, creators cannot dictate what kind of people connect with their work, why they connect with it, what conclusions they draw from it, what parts of it they find more important or compelling, what themes they draw from it, or what inspiration they feel because of it. when you put that stuff out there, it's out there. people will misrepresent it. people will twist its theme. people will take your characters and make them kiss each other.
you're right, artistic expression is not free real estate minable content. but you fail to realize that fan works are art too.
some of you really aren’t gonna like this, but a creator’s wishes should never dictate what fan content is produced for a piece of media.
in the past, authors like anne rice have tried to limit the production of fanfiction. but at least rice was honest - she thought this infringed on her copywrite. back in the day, this was considered a valid argument to not create any fanfiction at all for her works.
do you understand what i’m saying? while you may sound valiant for placing a creator’s “discomfort” above the fan’s natural proclivities in fandom, really you’re just continuing to advocate for censorship in fan spaces.
and for anyone who is a creator, or who wants to become one - get comfortable with the rules of the internet. there will be erotic content made of your characters, there will be weird AUs made with your characters. there will be strange pairings and headcanons, no matter if you interact religiously with the fans or not. you cannot stop people from connecting with and wanting to be creative with your characters.

one thing i think more people need to do in fandom/media spaces is stop attributing a single genre to a whole swath of media.
so many people say “fanfiction” when they really mean erotic fanfiction. fanfiction is a whole medium by which authors build upon pre-existing media - not all of it, or even most of it, is erotic in nature.
and the same thing is happening to entire tags on social media sites. “booktok” and “book twitter” are both being conflated with erotic fiction.
this also compounds when people try to compare “fanfiction” or “booktok books” (and by that i mean erotic fanfiction/fiction) to literary or classical fiction.
you wouldn’t compare a porno to casablanca, would you? then stop comparing erotic fiction to genres that have a vastly different purpose in their writing. and moreover - stop acting as if entire tags and forms of fiction are solely defined by their erotic subsection (and therefore lesser for it, which is a whole different puritanical can of worms).
