-- PART 2 : CHAPTER 1 --

Ellie and Bjorin talked for hours on their ride, each sharing their own stories from their lives. Bjorin had more to tell, due to his seemingly older age, but Ellie didn’t mind. Ellie enjoyed listening to the interesting and exciting stories of Bjorin’s past, and Bjorin enjoyed the attentive listening that she provided. “You’ve had a pretty eventful life it seems, Bjorin.”, Ellie says after Bjorin finishes his current story. Bjorin sighs, “That’s true, but not anymore. My body can’t handle the things I used to do now. I’ve just gotten too old for it.” Bjorin waits a moment. “But! The same thing cannot be said for you, Miss Ellie. You’re young, you’ve got a lot of exciting adventures ahead of you. I can tell.”. She turns a little red at his remark and looks down. “Oh I don’t know about that, Mr. Bjorin.. I don’t think I’m cut out for that.”. “Well sure you are!” Bjorin says with enthusiasm. “I mean, come on. You’re an ambitious young lady who is taking on the merchant business all by herself. From what you’ve told me, everything you’ve achieved has been done by your hand. You even pulled your cart yourself! Even being the small thing you are. You’ve got grit, Ellie. If anybody’s gonna have exciting things happen to them, it’ll be you.”. Ellie turns a full darker shade of red. She wasn’t used to compliments. But something stuck out to her. ‘All by herself’. It hadn’t occurred to her before that she always did things by herself. She never had anybody else. She didn’t think she needed anybody else. But becoming acquainted with Bjorin. It felt nice to her. It felt good to have someone to talk with. “Do.. Do you think I should be going through all of this by myself?” She asks Bjorin. He looks at her with surprise. “Well.. That’s not what I meant.”, He says with a nervous laugh. “It’s always good to have friends, Ellie. Do you think I went through all of my adventures by myself?”. Ellie laughs softly. “I’m going to assume no.”. Bjorin smiles, “Exactly. I always had a team. I always had someone there to help me. Yeah it shows grit and determination that you achieved so much by yourself, but it doesn’t make you a weaker person to have someone there for you.”, Bjorin thinks for a second. “And, if I’m being honest with you Miss Ellie, if you had someone there for you yesterday, when you were robbed. That might not have happened at all. A small girl all by herself, you were very vulnerable. You’re lucky I found ya, and not some creep.” Ellie thinks about this, and she realizes Bjorin’s completely right. It wasn’t smart to do this alone. It was too dangerous. Then she comes up with an idea, and blurts it out loud. “I’ve got it! A bodyguard!” Bjorin looks at her with a big grin and laughs heavily. “Good luck finding a good bodyguard cheap enough for you to afford, Miss Ellie!”. Ellie frowns at his response. “Well what do you expect me to do, Mr. Bjorin? I don’t have any friends..”. Bjorin’s face turns to regret for his comment. He sets his hand on Ellie’s shoulder, which is massive in comparison to her. “Don’t worry, Ellie. You’ll make a lot of friends along the way. Trust me.”. He stops for a moment before continuing again. “And for protection, you do make a good point, a bodyguard could be a good idea. Especially with your size. It’d be hard for you to protect yourself.”. “Yeah..” Ellie says gloomily. The pair share a moment of silence before Bjorin breaks it. “Hey, chin up, Miss Ellie. The town we’re heading to is bound to have a lot of job seekers, I’m sure you’ll find something.”. Ellie looks up and smiles at him. “I sure hope you’re right, Mr. Bjorin.”

As the sun starts going down, Ellie and Bjorin start approaching the town. Even in the evening, it seems bustling with activity. Lots of people coming and going, a multitude of tents set up outside of the town lining the sides of the road, and even more activity as they passed through the gate entrance leading into town. People bustling around, chatting, passing through, and dozens of shops and stands trying to sell their stock. Ellie’s eyes light up looking at all the business potential around the town. “Wow, Mr. Bjorin! I’ll be sure to find something here! There’s just so much activity!”. Bjorin chuckled at Ellie’s observation. “That there is, Miss Ellie! But it wasn’t always like this.”. Ellie faced Bjorin with a quizzical look. “It wasn’t?”. “Not at all! Back in my day, this town was small, quiet. Nothing more than a rest stop on most people’s paths. It wasn’t until new management took over that the place became a bustling trader’s hub! Not that I mind of course, since I don’t live in town.”. “But you do live here right?” Ellie questions. “Well it’s more in the area, rather than here. I live in a little cottage on the other side of town, where it's not nearly as busy. I like the town, I just don’t like the noise.”, he says with a hearty laugh. “Now, it is late, so I reckon you probably don’t want to start doing stuff today. There is an inn in town, but it’s rather expensive, which is why you see so many people staying in tents outside of town. So I thought I’d offer if you want to stay the night at my cottage, so that you're not out in the elements, and at least have a roof over your head.”. Ellie's face turns from wonder and awe, to shame and guilt. “Oh, Mr. Bjorin.. After all you’ve done, I couldn’t possibly accept your offer..”. “Baldurdash, Miss Ellie! If you want to, then I’ll allow it. Besides, you've been great company for this old dwarf. I wouldn’t mind having you around a little longer.”. Ellie’s eyes start tearing up, and she embraces the large dwarf in a hug, her arms barely being able to wrap around Bjorin’s large torso. “Thank you so much, Mr. Bjorin. For everything.”. Bjorin, mildly surprised by Ellie’s outward affection, embraces her as well. “Of course, Miss Ellie.”. They hold the hug for a moment before releasing. “Alright, let's head to the cottage.”.
