If you have been around for a while, you might know how much I wanted to see a post-pirate Zarina. Because I’ll say it again–Zarina was not truly a dust-keeper, and she was not truly a pirate, even if the movie was called “the pirate fairy.” She had to go through being both to figure who she really was, a pixie dust alchemist.

But we never got to see her style when she finally found her place/talent! She didn’t change out of her pirate outfit at the end of her movie, even though I knew she wouldn’t keep it forever, so I had to satisfy myself with headcanons of what she would wear and how she would do her hair.

Until this little book I almost didn’t even buy–the one instance of Z with a new design and I might have missed it! I have to admit I’m a little disappointed in how plain it is, because Zarina had a really individualistic sense of style with her customized dust-keeper apron, funky updo, and fashionable pirate garb and accessories.

With this design she almost looks like your average garden-variety fairy, maybe Rosetta’s cousin (pun intended) but I am happy to see a chance, if only because it proves my long-time opinion that she leaves her pirate life behind and moves on.

I did like the ideas of her changing her hair to a short cut, or keeping it long but wearing it in a braid, but I like this way too and I’m actually starting to like it better for what it could symbolize. Completely loose, not tied up or held with a headband like her previous looks. Not totally wild but still free, because it represents to me at least that she is no longer going to be restricted by others or held back, not by a head dust keeper who always told her what to do or a pirate who manipulated her. Now she’s in charge of her own talent and herself and she’s free.

I also love that she’s wearing a pink dress because I personally headcanon her favorite color as pink from the way she sounded so excited when she was like “what if there’s pink?” about pixie dust. And she’s wearing a sort of vest garment in the first picture, which is sort of a nod toward the dust-keeper uniform but still something different and new–it’s green and has sleeves.

I’m definitely over-analyzing Zarina’s outfit from like one picture in one random book, but I LOVE IT. It matters to my interpretation of her characterization.
