I think that intention behind the design is also a part of it? Like. Aphrodite is like that because she's the goddess of love and lust and for her to show up naked while having the biggest confidence in the world is in character. The other character looks like it's designed to just have people get horny for it. I bet the tits will have phisics beyond the gravitational pull of the moon. There is literally no comparison.

Basically, Aphrodite is naked because that's part of her being a badass. The other is almost naked to give people boners.

This is truly stiff competition for the worst case of willful false equivalence we've ever seen.

One of the latest fiascos in this mix has been the comparison of responses to character designs from Hades 2 (Aphrodite, left) and Stellar Blade (protagonist Eve, right). The post isn't by Mark, but is part of the general harassment campaign he's trying to lead.

If you're somehow not familiar with Aphrodite, she's the Ancient Greek goddess of love, lust and hot girl shit. It is absolutely perfect characterization for her to show up to a battle (or anything else) nude but for her hair teasingly covering the intimate parts of her body. But the buried lede here is, you don't fight her in Hades and nothing about Hades 2 indicates she'll fight there either, she just likes the aesthetic and has no reason not to indulge.

Stellar Blade will release on 26 April 2024, so we can't really give an informed discussion of her character. But what we do know is the studio head is the illustrator from Blade & Soul, Eve is described as being a member of "the 7th Airborne Squad" engaged in an "operation to reclaim the planet from the Naytiba", and the promotion material promises "an enthralling narrative filled with mature themes, mystery and revelation. Embrace the relentless pace, with no time to pause between moments where critical, story-changing decisions are made."

It's to be compared to games like Nier: Automata, Devil May Cry 5, Jedi: Fallen Order and Sekiro. And the screenshots look like this:

And yeah, unlike Bayonetta she's not supposed to be an unstoppable force of nature (and fashion) who is immune to self-doubt, she's supposed to be the scrappy underdog last survivor of her team.

Weird they gave her a costume that conveys... the opposite of literally everything they're supposed to be trying to tell you about her.

The news about Sokka not being sexist in the Avatar Netflix show took people by surprise. After all, Sokka overcoming sexism and starting to drink his respect woman juice was a huge development for him. But I think people are misunderstanding the situation.

Sokka's sexism wasn't taken away to make him less problematic, it was taken away to not let Katara be a feminist.

Let's all be honest here. Netflix doesn't care about equality or being righteous. They take inclusivity and use it as merchandise. They take problematic characteristics away so that they advertise their shows to kids. But most importantly: they take away just causes and political speech or wash it down for it to be as profitable as possible.

Sokka isn't a sexist anymore because Netflix doesn't want people to be offended by him. Sokka isn't a sexist anymore because if he was Katara would have to be the angry feminist that she always was and Netflix doesn't want people to be offended by HER.

Because Katara was revolutionary. She called her brother a "stupid maschilist" in kid's show as her second line. She is the first one to believe in change. She inspires a bunch of adult men into rebelling against an occupational force by raising her voice and being flashy and loud. She insulted a 70 years old dude to his face and fought him because he was a sexist jerk and she challenged traditional gender roles. She tore down a factory because it was destroying the ecosystem.

THAT is Katara.

A loud and young girl, feminist and ecoterrorist that quite literally changed the world by believing in change and being loud about her ideas and hopes.

She is a NIGHTMARE for most folks of the older generations and conservatives fucks.

Toning down Sokka means toning down Katara and that is what they want.

Gale of Waterdeep may have been an archmage, but Gale Dekarios is a better wizard. Because you can study all you want, but experience is a better teacher than all.

Thinking about Gale's spellbook.

Not the old one, the one he carried when he was Gale, the Wizard of Waterdeep - a gorgeous, leather-and-silver bound thing that bulged with a lifetime's worth of accumulated knowledge. There were spells in there penned over wine and cheese with Elminster; in a flow state that bordered on the spiritual after a night with Mystra, remembering her instruction, the feel of her soul against his. That spellbook was the testament to his success, the proof that he had excelled beyond the excellent -

And then Mystra cut him off from the Weave, and it all become meaningless.

His own runes, rendered incomprehensible; beautiful spell-glyphs that turned from condensed power and knowledge to worthless pieces of art. He has to start anew, from the ground up - reforging his connection to the Weave without Mystra's guidance (without her, without), relearning schoolboy spells. Humiliatingly easy magic, the kind he used to do like it was breathing, except this time he has to study and work and try and try, Tara urging him on with firm but gentle words.

He learns different spells, now. Mage Armour, Shield, Magic Missile. Not the kind of spells that he'll ever need on a day-to-day basis; spells that'll keep him alive long enough when he makes an exodus to the depths of the Underdark, or the centre of some desert wastes, and goes supernova.

The new spellbook is a plainer thing, small enough to fit in a robe pocket (because extradimensional storage spaces are no longer things he can make with a thought). And then he's snatched by a Nautiloid, and... honestly, he'd swear that the spine just wants to hold onto blood-spatters, no matter how many times he cleans them out. The pages get spotted from all the times he's had to flick them open in driving rain; the corners get creased from being shoved in and out of his robes.

And absolutely nothing can protect it from the unstoppable force of his friends.

Karlach nearly sends the whole thing up in flames one night by gesticulating a bit too wildly. Wyll laughs too hard one night and sprays wine all over Gale's new notes on Abjuration. Scratch picks up the entire thing and runs off with it when Gale's back is foolishly turned, and it's only a stern talking-to from Halsin that saves the whole thing from becoming a chew toy.

Smiley cat faces, doodled on the pages in Yenna's untidy hand. A helpful comment from Karlach on the Fireball page: 'AKA FUCK YEAH LET'S GO!!!!' A few lines of Wyll's perfect handwriting, a memento from a long discussion about how infernal energies could enhance fire magic; a few observations from Shadowheart on warding enchantments. Some terse comments on psionic magic from Lae'zel that Gale finds himself weaving into his Shields, and they do seem to hold up a little better now. (Other hands on his spellbook! Touching the pages he carries close to his heart! The man he was would never have believed it.)

He thinks of them all, as he writes new spells. Counterspell, because nothing will touch them. Spells that will carry his people from danger and shield them from harm. He watches Astarion pace before the fire one night and inscribes Sunbeam with a cold smile of promise to Cazador; he glowers at Mizora over the edge of the pages as he ponders what spells would be best suited to killing a devil.

A wizard's spellbook, Elminster told him once, is a reflection of their soul. Gale of Waterdeep's spellbook was a marvel; perfect and polished and resplendant. Untouched by any hands but his own.

Gale Dekarios's spellbook is battered and beloved, covered on every page with the fingerprints of his friends.
