ex-odus:
“It was necessary. I think you’re smart enough to know that, Jean. But if it helps— I apologize.” He said the words, even if he didn’t really mean it.
“Of course. I’m not mad at you, just a little mad in general. We don’t need any fake apologies, Exodus, we both know that the scope of this is bigger than my feelings.”

“Even those with resilience must take a step back sometimes. You were met with a horrific fate, even if you have returned it is still something that happened to you.”
“It’d be more horrific if I remembered it. Horrific or not, I’m pissed. I know I have a right to be.”

“I thought you didn’t remember that.” Scott is careful as he studies her face. “Or are you just going off of what other people have told you?”
“Objectively speaking, even the idea of being blown up sucks. I think it’s a fair statement to make, Scott.”

“They technically did explode.” Bucky didn’t want to have to point that out, but it was low hanging fruit. Something was off about all of this and he didn’t like it. “You exploded too, if I heard all of that right.”
“You’re right, they did. And yet, ironically, they both walked away fine.” Emma had known about the explosion and had contingency plans in place. Carol just proved hard to kill. “I did,” Jean confirms. “It was more like combusted.”

“I’m all for this plan, but blowing you into pieces seemed a little extreme.”
“A little extreme? They could have at least tried to let the explosion take me out before Exodus popped me. Look, I’m happy to be here. I’m happy to have my mind this clear. I’m just also going to be a little upset for a while.”

“What the hell is going on?” Nate was both angry and scared, and the tone of his voice gave it away. “Maybe the explosion was an accident, but what happened to you definitely wasn’t.”
“I wish I could say you were wrong, but you’re not. This was deliberate. I’m not impossible to kill. Everyone likes to make fun of me for dying so often.” Even so, Jean had been especially powerful as of late. She understands why Exodus did why he did. “It feels like overkill, though.”

“Give yourself a break. Please.” Nate was tired of all the death, even if the people he loved got brought back. “Everyone will be fine if you take a step back from the motivational speeches for a bit. Are you doing okay?”
“You know me. I’m great at giving myself breaks.” Jean can’t help but sigh. She’s always been hard on herself, and that’s partly Charles’ fault. He had put so much pressure on the original team at such a young age. They were all coping with that decades later. “That’s good, because I don’t actually have any in me right now. I’m fine. You know how resurrections go. You come out healed and rejuvenated. That doesn’t make me less angry, of course, but I’m okay.”

“Y-Yeah, I was really hoping that part wasn’t true.” Steven couldn’t help his actual grimace as he winced and just shook his head. “That’s awful.”
“It was painless.” Even though she’s the one who blew up, Jean feels the need to reassure him. “That doesn’t mean I’m happy about it, though. I’ll be looking into answers alongside my husband.”

“How is it that you always find a new way to die?”
“Everyone has different skills. I guess we can say I’m nothing if not creative.”

“And I keep telling everyone how fucking weird that is but no one’s listening.”
“I think people are listening, they may just not know what to do about it. I get that it’s scary.” So far, no one has connected Exodus to Jean’s death. Even if they do, it’s nothing a little telepathic tampering can’t fix. “I can imagine it was traumatizing to be there.”

“Yeah, uh, do you wanna talk about that?” Kate’s hoping she says no but rummages around in her bag for a bottle of whiskey just in case.
“I’ll spare you the gory details. it seems that everyone wants to talk about it, and honestly? I’m tired. We have a bigger issue than my combustion.”

“Exodus has always been one for dramatics, hasn’t he?” Charles sighed softly to himself as he tilted his head at Jean. It was nice to have her into the fold finally, but he knew that her death was raising more suspicions than necessary. “I’m glad you at least understand now why we had to do what we did.”
“He’s nothing if not efficient.” It had been instantaneous. One moment she was standing there, the next crawling out of the husk. One hand raises to gently touch the red diamond now embedded in her forehead. “Of course. It was needed. I’m not sure Scott would agree, though. I know he’s unsettled by it. I’ll do what I can to throw him off the scent until it’s time for him to join us.”

“That’s a rough way to go. It’s kind of a compliment though, isn’t it? I’d take it as a compliment.”
“Rough, sure. I still think I’m the lucky one. At least it was fast.” She can’t help but smile. “I guess you could say that. I don’t really care much for being Jean Grey right now. Not when everything finally makes sense.”

“I know that I’m Jean Grey and I’m supposed to say something about how resilient we are, but it really sucks being blown up.” Even if it’s for a good cause.

His breath caught when she grabbed his hand, but he didn’t pull away. A smile was attempted and then he took in a sharp breath. “Yeah.” That’s really all he could manage at first when he was reassured they were alright. Nate was part of a complicated family, but it was his. And he cherished it. “It’s not about things bein’ easy. I don’t need easy. It’s just a matter of being where I need to be, when I need to be. This is where I need to be.” The last sentence was firm, even if he worried he was acting too much on his emotions. “Even if there is that young twerp with my face running around. Though you’re no stranger to that at this point either.”
Jean’s keeping an eye on the younger Cable. “Not a stranger, no. Things with him were...complicated, to say the least. He killed you, Nate. That took a long time to get over. But I realized eventually he was my son, too.” It feels wrong to say that to him. The boy who killed you — who is you — is also my son. It makes it sound like she replaced him. Jean loves them both differently. “When they resurrected you, I couldn’t have been more relieved. We all need you.”
