Urban Gardening
Last Spring I purchased a Meyer Lemon Bush  for my “balcony garden.”  While there were many fragrant blossoms earlier this year (I kept it inside during the Winter months),  I believe that finally I might have a lemon on the way. Life’s simple pleasures. In other urban garden news, the two Mourning Dove eggs mentioned here, appear to have been abandoned and I fear they are no longer viable. Life…

On Sacred Idleness
Certainly work is not always required of a man. There is such a thing as a sacred idleness, the cultivation of which is now fearfully neglected. -George MacDonald Neglected indeed.

Another Observation
I took this photo (with the old Olympus) at Edisto Beach, SC in 2011. It has been used on websites and other places. I Between flattery and admiration there often flows a river of contempt -Minna Antrim My blogging has been sparse.  Between the meteoric growth of our business, some travel, and no longer having a laptop, it has been difficult for me to make the time to blog.  This too, shall pass.

On Humility
“Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it’s thinking of yourself less” -C.S. Lewis The last two weeks have reminded me of this quote.  Competing priorities, coupled with laptop issues have caused me to take almost a week off from blogging.  It is just another pause in that thing we call “ life”.

Comin' Out Of Nowhere . . .
Stormbringer, the 9th studio album by Deep Purple was released in November of 1974. Not a bad song on the album. Here are a few examples from the 1975 tour supporting the record. Interestingly enough, it starts off with the title track from “Burn,” the previous album.   “Rock ‘n Roll.” 1 BURN 0:00  2 STORMBRINGER 7:44 3 THE GYPSY 12:21 4 SOLDIER OF FORTUNE 17:20  5 LADY DOUBLE DEALER 19:25

On Stress Reduction
Work can be hard. I suppose that is why they call it work. Sometimes, it can be extra difficult and when some personality drama is added, it can be downright stressful. And while I have always leaned toward the Baroque period, (1600-1750),  I find myself attracted to the works of Johannes Brahms, (1833-1897), who composed during the Romantic Period. My iPad is in my office, and the Idagio app…

On Reading
Reading with Dad, 1963 We read to train the mind, to fill the mind, to rest the mind, to recreate the mind, or to escape the mind. -Holbrook Jackson, 1874 – 1948 Which do you use the most? For me, it’s a combination of training and filling.

And Now There Are Two!
The fact that a Mourning Dove has taken up residence in one of my plants on the balcony seems pretty insignificant, but I’m finding it exciting. It was first mentioned here yesterday. Enjoy the simple things and avoid the drama.

A Springtime Squatter
Several years ago, a friend gave me some cuttings from a succulent he had been growing. The plant had managed to survive my lack of care and still grew into a thriving plant. Earlier this week I moved the plant, along with two others from inside to my outdoor balcony.  When I went to water them this morning, I found that the succulent had been decimated and renovated into a makeshift nest. The…

Was He Correct?
I recall that while in college (1978-82) buying a few of Steve Martin’s comedy albums and enjoying the combination of stand-up and banjo picking. In one of his skits, Steve makes the comment that “you just can’t play a sad song on the banjo” and goes into an upbeat . . . “Oh death and grief and sorrow and murder.” Below is another example of “you just can’t play a sad song on the banjo,” along…
