listen, both ichigo and orihime had to give free therapy to two insane crackheads who didn’t know how to chill tf out. luckily for grimmjow, ichigo was able to talk him down from his suicidal ragemania, but it’s not orihime’s fault ulquiorra turned to dust in the middle of his therapy session. he shoulda not been such a bitch about everything and go stabby stabby on a couple of stupid kids. mayhaps if ichigo and orihime had been compensated for being emotional support systems for a pair of depressed, suicidal randos, mayhaps things would be different. unfortunately they are what they are, and ulquiorra died as he lived, unloved and without any friends, though grimmjow lucked out and is no longer considering death by boss battle.

and the crux of it was that shinji was the perfect general. he led, but he led with enough emotional distance that his subordinates weren’t fawning over him, but not so much that they grew to hate him. shinji led like a man who understood that the soul society was a fucked up raggedy mess, but also that he had a duty to perform as a shinigami, something that transcended court politics. shinji understood the grey neutral between duty and obsession, and never let himself get swayed by either, which allowed him a hundred years to subjugate his hollow AND prepare for the winter war. that’s why aizen couldn’t help but love/hate him, because kisuke he could clown cuz kisuke was just as obsessed with his science as aizen was. momo he could attempt to murder because momo was a simp. gin he could cut down because gin reached too far when he should have kept his head down.

but shinji? shinji took the heat and bounced back every damn time, because for shinji, every moment wasn’t a be-all end-all. each tragedy was a life lesson. hollowfying was a life lesson. watching hiyori get bifurcated was a life lesson. every time aizen tore him down, he got back up, every single time. how could aizen not hate and desire him at the same time? it was the one man in the manga who he tried to emotionally defeat before physically crushing, and that man came right the fuck back, every single time.

shinji was special not because he was a successful hollowfication experiment. shinji was special cuz he called out aizen for what he was, and never tried to downplay it or change aizen’s mind. if anything, shinji was probably the first person who not only accepted aizen for what he was (a two-faced lanky bitch), but actively clowned him for it, despite it all. and how could aizen hate that? he hated simps, and shinji was never, ever a simp for anyone or anything, no matter how much he pretended.
