i'm new writing on tumblr. i received an anon message that says "x reader" tag is where the character has intimate relationship with reader. is that correct? or is "x reader" can be any reader insert fic regardless of their relationship with the character e.g. romantic, friendship, family etc.

i hope this makes sense.

Hi anon!

‘x reader’ does typically refer to a romantic, intimate relationship yes. You’ll mainly see relationship tags with that fictional character.

However occasionally you’ll see specific clarifications. “Platonic! [Character] X reader” indicates a friendship between reader and character. “Mom! [Character]” indicates that the character acts as the readers maternal figure. (not to be confused with Mommy![Character] that’s a whole other tag haha)

So as long as there is clarification within the front of the tag, you can write and see all the different iterations under the same “x reader tag”

The issue, then, lies within not tagging appropriately and that’s why a few people are starting to get aggravated. I was reading the “Emily Prentiss x Reader” tag and i spotted 3 other characters in that tag with emily appearing for a paragraph or so, with it being tagged Emily X Reader. Not even “Platonic! Emily x Reader”, just tagged simply as Emily X reader, herby shoving another character under Emily’s tag and clogging up the tag.

People are falling into the trap of 1) tagging every character with x reader 2). making the tagged characters a background character. 3) incorrectly clarifying the relationships.
