[Celeste] : Madeline's Hair
Tumblr media
"The character sprite is drawn without her hair, and then we add it in afterwards in real time. The hair is a list of about 5 or 6 points that follow each other with an offset and maximum distance, with the first point being anchored to her head. Each point just draws a simple circle, reducing in size the further away it is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The offsets of each point are usually down + slightly away from her (ex. -0.5, 2.0), so that in general they rest hanging downwards, however the offsets can be changed depending on the environment (ex. when there's wind the offsets are more like (-1, 0) so it doesn't fall).
Tumblr media
There's also a few different frames of her bangs / top of her hair that covers up where this list of points actually meets her head. Each animation has metadata associated with it on where to render the hair, so they match up with the animation."

[Capcom vs. SNK 2: Mark of the Millennium 2001] : Kyo & Kyosuke
Tumblr media
Kyosuke Kagami first appeared in the 1997 3D fighting game, Rival Schools: United by Fate. Four years later, Kyosuke made his 2D fighting game debut in 2001's Capcom vs. SNK 2. That being said, the first time we'd see a Kyosuke sprite was two years earlier in SNK vs. Capcom: Card Fighters' Clash.

The Arcade game Rad Mobile is in fact Sonic’s first video game appearance. It was released in January of 1991 where Sonic appears as a hanging air freshener. The first Sonic The Hedgehog game wouldn’t be released until June of 1991.

[Capcom vs. SNK 2: Mark of the Millennium 2001] : Yuri & Sakura
Tumblr media
Whereas every SNK character was given a brand new set of sprites for Capcom vs. SNK 1 & 2, only half of Capcom's cast received original sprites. The other half simply use their sprites from the Street Fighter Alpha series, albeit slightly resized to better match the proportions of everyone else.

No, Shin Bison himself isn't present in Capcom vs. SNK 2: Mark of the Millenium 2001, but his color scheme is via an alternate palette / costume for regular ol' M. Bison.

[8-Bit Katamari Damacy] : Pixel Prince (& Cousins)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
8-Bit Katamari Damacy was a browser game that, as the name suggests, utilized 8-bit graphics for it's visuals. Instead of playing as the Prince or one of the Cousins, you take control of The King of All Cosmos.
Tumblr media
It's a simple little demake and thankfully, a few people have archived the game for posterity. While the gameplay is rudimentary, the the pixel art is quite charming. Check it out if you have a moment of free time.
In a future entry, I'll cover how these sprites would be reused for other games in the franchise. Surprisingly enough, The Prince of All Cosmos' sprite would also be used in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

In the Super Mario All-Stars version of Super Mario Bros. 3 (middle), the animation of the Muncher enemies is incorrect, with the two halves of their mouths moving slightly out of sync. This issue was not present in the original NES version (left), and was fixed in the Super Mario Advance 4 version (right).

[Super Smash Bros. Series] : Pac-Man's Pixels
Tumblr media
Pac-Man finally made his Super Smash Bros. debut in 2014 with the release of Super Smash Bros. for 3DS / Wii U. One of the interesting ways the designers highlighted the character's association with 80's arcade games was to utilize 8-bit graphics.
Tumblr media
By using his up taunt, Pac-Man briefly summons a random 8-bit sprite from classic Namco games like Dig Dug, Mappy, Galaga and of course, Pac-Man.
Tumblr media
Additionally, the 3DS and Wii U versions feature sprites that're exclusive to each port.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oddly enough, one of the sprites that Pac-Man can summon actually isn't 8-bit or from a series that even utilizes pixelated graphics.
Tumblr media
For whatever reason, included alongside a bunch of sprites from 80's and 90's games is an image of Don Chan from the Taiko no Tasujin series.
Tumblr media
Similar to his up-taunt, Pac-Man's down-taunt features 8-bit sprites of Blinky and Pinky from the original 1980 arcade game.
In the following game, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, these two taunts have been modified.
Tumblr media
The down taunt in Ultimate replaces the Blinky and Pinky sprites with sprites of two fairies from Pac-Land.
Tumblr media
In Ultimate, Pac-Man's up-taunt now includes all of the sprites from both the 3DS and Wii U games. In addition to those, Pac-Man can now also display sprites of Tekken's Heihachi and The Prince of all Cosmos from the Katamari series.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(These sprites are originally from Tekken Tag Tournament 2 and 8-Bit Katamari Damacy, respectively.)
Tumblr media
Pac-Man doesn't just pull out old pixels for fun, his "Bonus Fruit" technique enables him to summon sprites from the original arcade title to toss at his enemies. How long this technique is charged determines which item he'll be given.
Tumblr media
Similar to his down taunt from the 3DS and Wii U versions of Smash Bros, Pac-Man summons pixelated ghosts for his smash attacks.

[Marvel vs. Capcom: Official Complete Works] : Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Sprites
Tumblr media
The Marvel vs. Capcom series is affectionately known for it's stellar sprite work, so when Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds was announced to have 3D visuals, some fans were a bit disappointed.
Tumblr media
Despite it not looking like previous entries in the franchise, Marvel vs. Capcom 3 ended up looking great. Less than a year after it's a debut, an updated version titled Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 was released. This revision added characters like Hawkeye, Frank West, Iron Fist and Firebrand to the roster of playable characters.
Tumblr media
In 2012, Capcom teamed up with their frequent collaborator Udon Entertainment to release Marvel vs. Capcom: Official Complete Works. This book contains concept art, promotional pieces and other works from the artists who worked on the series.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Two years later, a special "2D" edition of this book with a slipcover featuring sprites of the MvC3 & UMvC3 newcomers was released for a limited time. These new sprites were created by former Udon comic book illustrator and Overwatch character designer, Arnold Tsang.
Tumblr media
Interestingly enough, (most of) these sprites were not created specifically for this book. Tsang originally posted these sprites on his DeviantArt page two years before this book was released.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The only exception is Arthur. As seen above, Tsang didn't create new sprites for MvC3's veteran characters like Ryu, The Hulk, Felicia and Magneto.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Storm's sprite is a heavily edited sprite of hers from previous games. Jill also received a new sprite, because her MvC3 incarnation is essentially a brand new character. A new "evil" version, if you will.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even though he wasn't playable in a previous game, Arthur did appear as an assistant character in Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes, so Tsang used his sprites from that for his collage of characters seen above.
Tumblr media
For whatever reason, Tsang created a brand new sprite that more closely resembles his appearance and fighting stance from Marvel vs. Capcom 3 for the purposes of this book.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tsang's sprites look like they were created by Capcom's best pixel artists during their heyday. If you're interested in seeing more his art, check out his DeviantArt and ArtStation pages. If you check out his DA page, you might even notice that some of his other sprites would also be retroactively used by one his former employers.

[Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara] : Alternate Characters
Tumblr media
Released in 1994, Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom is one of Capcom's most innovative arcade titles, mixing beat' em up gameplay and tabletop RPG elements.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Two years later, a follow up titled Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara was released. This sequel was even more ambitious than its already ambitious predecessor. Shadow over Mystara gives players more techniques, items, routes and characters to play with compared to the original.
Tumblr media
Tower of Doom featured four playable characters based on D&D classes: a Fighter, Elf, Cleric and Dwarf. In Shadow over Mystara, those characters are joined by two other characters based upon D&D's Magic User and Thief classes.
Tumblr media
Additionally, Shadow over Mystara allows two players to select the same class. Being a hand-drawn game, most would assume that these secondary versions would be simple palette swaps.
Tumblr media
Instead, the developers created a second set of edited sprites for every character class. Furthermore, the alternate and default versions of the Cleric and Magic User classes have some of their own exclusive spells.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's very rare to see "alternate costumes" like these in a hand drawn game, much less in the mid 90's. Details like these show how much of a labor of love these two games were for Capcom's designers.

[Bleak Sword DX]
Tumblr media
Mobile developer Luis Moreno Jimenez (more8bit) has worked in the games industry for more than 20 years.
“I started pretty early doing little 3D models and crude animations, and fantasizing about the games I would like to make..."
Inspired by the growing number of indie innovators finding success outside large studios, Luis decided to pursue the dream of making his own game.
Tumblr media
From the outset, Luis knew he wanted to make a mobile game, and he had a clear idea of what Bleak Sword would look like. The game features 2D sprites rendered in a 3D environment. All game assets use minimalistic pixel art, brought to life in a lo-fi, monochrome style.

I finally got a new computer, but I haven't set up all the programs I regularly use to make posts. That's why this post is just some copy and pasted quotes from a PR blog and some images/gifs from this game's Steam page. That said, I'm looking forward to highlighting more recent games like Bleak Sword.
