I drew you a picture!” the little girl squeaked as she ran up to the captain, getting up on her tiptoes and lifting it high over her head to show him. “I kinda messed up a little on me, but lookit, I drew Mommy, and the baby too!” she chirped, pointing to the red splotch of crayon meant to be Kasumi, her midsection enlarged.

“And I know Aimi doesn’t smile a whole lot, but I made her smile in the picture since she’s next to Mommy, and she always smiles when she’s with Mommy!” Kaede continued, but pouted a little. “I didn’t have enough room on the paper for Uncle Shunsui, Miss Rukia or Mister Sentaro, tho...” but soon the little girl was grinning again.

“What do you think, Daddy?! Do you like it??” the six year old asked, brown eyes like her mother’s glimmering with hope.

He didn’t know it, but his hands were shaking. When his fiancee walked out from the shop, a quick sigh of relief escaped his lips. Kasumi gave him more anxiety than the battlefield. 

“There you are.” Ukitake said, gripping Kasumi’s shoulders tightly. “I was so worried! Why didn’t you stay within the Seireitei? There are plenty of places for you to shop!”

Kasumi kept her gaze lowered; she could feel his quickened heartbeat through his tight grip on her small shoulders, she’d caused the sickly captain anxiety. Over the actions of other people. The tiny woman wanted to get out, and away.

“....I know, I didn’t want to go shopping in the seireitei...Just because I get called unsavory things often, doesn’t mean I want to hear it.” the pregnant shinigami replied, gripping her shopping bag tightly. While Jushiro was bombarded with kind and excited inquiries pertaining to the wedding and upcoming birth of their little one, Kasumi received negative commentary about the matters, particularly from her coworkers in the Eighth. She’d often be accused of sleeping her way into an influential position as the captain’s wife, or even lying about the parentage of their unborn child, preying on the captain’s love of children and desire to be a father. None of it was true, and she knew that, but nonetheless it wore on her, and she just wanted to be able to shop for their baby in peace for once.

“I must thank you, for taking such good care of him! I do worry ever so much when I’m away, but knowing he’s in such capable hands is reassuring! He speaks so highly of you and Kotetsu-san!” Kasumi began with a smile. “Ahh, I do sometimes wish I was in his division as well, he is a great man! I believe you, I hear such wonderful things about the Thirteenth from him! I feel so honored, to be engaged to the Gotei’s finest captain, not to speak ill of my own captain! Jushiro is so wonderful, and an excellent father to our daughters!” she continued, a blush creeping up at the third seat’s words. “Oh my, you’re making me blush! Thank you ever so much, Kotsubaki-san! It’s a pleasure to finally meet you as well!”

“Do tell me if I can repay your kindess, sir. If you in turn need help with him, I would be glad to assist.” the tiny shinigami continued. It was times like this that she commended Jushiro’s choice in fine officers, but the stalking is a bit unsettling tho.

The tiny woman perked up at this, impressed with the shrewdness of her soon to be husband’s third seat. “Brilliant idea…I should have thought of that sooner.” She whispered, tapping a tiny finger to her ruby lips. “I usually just have the girls distract him and catch him off guard… I should have asked sooner.” She continued quietly, glad to have a second mind to pick through.

;}Feathers{; Kasumi ten years after. Having been widowed again, Kasumi has taken an oath to never marry again, cemented by the fact that she kept Jushiro’s family name. They managed to have two of their own children, a set of twins a girl named Hitomi, and a boy named Yuki. Aimi and Kaede are older now, and have promised Kasumi not to become shinigami, but still Aimi accompanies her mother to work, wearing the lieutenant’s badge as a sign of defiance, and that Kasumi is not going to pick a real lieutenant. Jushiro’s haori is in their possession, draped over what used to be his and Kasumi’s bed. She’s taken to wearing a veiled sakkat like she did as a hitokiri, to hide her tired face (raising four kids is hard). Now it’s Kaede who’s gone mute, and has lost her cheer. The last words she spoke were to Jushiro (’I love you, Daddy’), so she refuses to let anything else be her last words. Kasumi’s hair is even longer, and she wears an obi to pay homage to another great captain (Unohana). WIP
