"Section 1031 of the Internal Revenue Code which allows a seller to delay paying taxes on a piece of real estate this is sold for a capital gain through an exchange for a more expensive piece of real estate. As long as you keep trading up in value, you will not be taxed on the gains until you liquidate.”

“There’s a problem with trying to understand every mistake you’ve made…you can’t. And trying to robs you of your life, your plans, your future. Plus, you can’t really learn from your mistakes if you stop moving forward.”

“I was getting much more inner growth from my travels than from my career. I loved sales, education, music, and sports. I considered changing professions, maybe start writing short stories and travelogues, going into advertising, or becoming a teacher, a musician, or a football coach. I didn’t know.”

“I was never too bothered by the consistent critical write-offs of me and my work. I enjoyed making romantic comedies, and their paychecks rented the houses on the branches I ran shirtless on. Getting relative with this inevitability, no way was this working-class country boy going to be condescending about the opportunities they gave me, no matter how categorized they were.”

“If it weren’t for Pat, Matthew and his other successful brother in the oil business wouldn’t understand struggles and they would have a lot less compassion for people having a hard time.”
I feel this way when I see Marlene or Bri/Dan struggle with not buying certain things or going to nail places in Amityville. Marlene also said she couldn’t afford Orange Theory and that’s why she went to Planet Fitness for $10/month versus $160/month. That cost is no problem for me and Connor for CrossFit.

“I came back to L.A. a changed man again, feeling more clear and practical than I ever had. Another period of 22 days with very limited spoken English and mostly pantomimed conversations gave me a solitary yet communal experience that made me feel more at home than I ever had before, and I got my sink back. With my tolerance for verbose vanities not far above 0, I knew the recently back into my fast-paced and privileged life back in Hollywood was going to be a challenge. No longer interested in transient whimsy and city life, I was ready to move on from the Chateau.”

“I’d learned a few things about the Hollywood hustle over the years. For starters, it’s better to play your own game in the business of Hollywood than to do your business playing Hollywood’s game. You have to get the joke, and the joke is, nothing’s personal. From the I love yous to the unreturned phone calls when your last picture didn’t perform, they will pick you up in a limo, but you might have yo catch a cab home. It’s not personal, it’s just business.”
-I feel like this relates to my work but I’m not “in” on the joke. I take things too personally and don’t “play the game” of staying long-term somewhere to earn the most money I can

Can take this as a literal “high” or a figurative “high” through endorphins from sports or when things are going well in your life.
