Summer of 63 (part 1)
Tumblr media
I’ll never get over the loss of 60s fem azicrow, so to make up for it I’m making a two part thing of the two of them in 60s fem summer fashion! I’d like to imagine they visited the California coast (I’ve never been there but I think it’s nice (just imagine beach boys playing in the bg))
Anyway, here’s Crowley!!

While I don’t feel like the execution of this switch was done right, they definitely aren’t some sort of capitalism demons lol. Actual millionaires and billionaires that are causing the deaths of so many people are way worse! It’s shitty that watcher dropped this bomb like this and it doesn’t seem like a super great decision (especially with the economic crisis and people having to live paycheck to paycheck ((especially with of their fan base saying that they are struggling financially)) but it does seem shitty to be sending so much hate to a small business creative team. Hope they switch around how it’s gonna work during the beta period and figure out a better solution
idk life’s tough, gonna see how this plays out before I decide anything certain
ah yes we need to flush out those rich elites like *checks notes* those people who made ghost hunting videos on YouTube

Anyone who is nervous about this I just put my name in and got gifted :))
The people in this community are so nice, especially in the light of everything today. I’m so glad to be a part of this fandom purely from the kindness and creativity that radiates from it
i am not here for negativity in any way do NOT bring that here.
if you want a FREE watcher.tv subscription, fill out this google form!
your email will then be put in a random generator as collected to be given to someone looking to gift a subscription. several fans have offered to do this for other fans, and this is an (unofficial) way to do this!
if you would LIKE TO DONATE A SUBSCRIPTION, either reblog this (for traction) with a reply, reply here, or DM me directly! you will receive a random email from me to gift someone. use the watcher.tv "gift a subscription" option to do so! would appreciate proof as well.
note-- your gift is at your donor's discretion. it could be one month, it could be a year, but we want to show support AND get more people the opportunity to jump in on this.
hooray kindness NO NEGATIVITY DO NOT EVEN TRY IT

Literally my thoughts exactly. Hope they modify the current website to make it more accessible to their audience without having to waste all the money that probably went into making the site
Problems (objective and personal) I'm not seeing discussed a lot w this new WatcherTV thing, in no particular order:
-Alienates people internationally who literally CANNOT GET the streaming service!
-Alienates casual fans who don't watch or want to watch all of their shows. Putting down 60 bucks a year to watch just one or two shows is kind of insane, at least for me.
-The volume of content Watcher has produced historically hasn't been enough to justify a separate streamer. I understand there's no way a small team could compete with something like Netflix, obviously, but that's what you're trying to do by putting yourself in the streamer market.
-Will this streamer be secure? What steps are in place to protect your viewers info? ESPECIALLY payment info.
-Will it be easily watchable on multiple devices? I watch YouTube videos on my phone at work 90% of the time, or at home on my TV thru my switch. Is this a browser only deal?
-What are the internet requirements for this? Believe it or not most streaming services won't run on my internet personally. I don't have any for that reason. I can watch YouTube on 360p, or on my 2-bar-reception phone data. Not everywhere has stable reliable internet.
-The suddenness and totality of the move was going to be jarring no matter what, if the idea had been introduced gradually or started as a hybrid model to test audience interest there wouldn't be nearly this amount of pushback.
-I understand the people saying "pay artists!!" Bc I am one, and I get that their quality is expensive and they have a whole company's worth of people to support. I do actually think their work is worth paying for! Everyone's is! But convincing anyone to pay for something they previously got for free is going to be a hard sell. They were still getting paid before, they're now just asking us to pay instead of the advertisers. Idk about you, but that's a way bigger hit to my pocketbook than a multimillion dollar company's bank account.
-I get that YouTube can be a really shitty place to be a creator sometimes, and that being beholden to advertisers is something they don't want to be. It's why they left Buzzfeed! They already have a patreon and merch and it's clearly not been enough for their ambitions. But shooting yourself in the foot because your running shoes are wearing out isn't going to make you a better marathon runner. They had to know that there was going to be a not small portion of their audience unwilling to make this move with them (and again, lots literally aren't able to!)
-If they had a free w/ ads option, or even did a hybrid model with whole shows behind the pay wall, or even just ran a fucking crowd funding campaign to help cover costs of new seasons of shows, any of those things could have worked. They don't even have YouTube memberships turned on, which I've personally seen many many channels do even when they already have a patreon. It really doesn't seem like they've exhausted other options, at least from an outside perspective, which is all we have as viewers!
-I get that this has been in the works for a long time, and that there probably isn't a way for them to back out now. But I hope they can find a way to make this more accessible if they want it to work at all. I truly am not wishing for their downfall, but the whole situation is an awful mess.
Idk, rant over. As a lot of you are I'm feeling very disappointed and upset with this one, and I'm not paying for it either. Hope the boys can salvage this one for their and their crew's sake. Would really hate for this to be the end.

I totally see what they were going for but the execution isn’t great. I really think if they lowered the price (especially below what other companies have with more variety)
or have it free with adds like you said. So many services have a free or cheaper version with adds and people use it. Plus your gonna have people who will pay for a premium version to get rid of the ads. Plus then on the separate website you don’t have to deal with other companies taking a portion of revenue or making your content hard to find for new viewers.
I absolutely support paying artists and supporting creators, and seeing the quality of Watcher's videos especially lately I've understood that it wouldn't be sustainable for a while now. I will never say that I expect anyone to come out with so much high-quality content so regularly without being financially compensated for it.
That being said, I think the way they've gone about this has just not been the smartest. First off by doing this so suddenly with no warning, and also having a big countdown to it when it's actually quite a sad thing to see them go. Like it felt like they were counting down to a party but then it was a funeral that took place instead, and even the mood of the video they put out was quite somber. I think it put the wrong expectations in fans (me included), which just made the shock even bigger than it needed to be (especially for this sort of announcement).
I think they actually were quite respectful of the fact that people wouldn't be able to continue to follow them over to WatcherTV, but the comment about "making it affordable so everyone could subscribe to their plan" and then it being $60 a year was kind of insulting. It would have been better if they'd been realistic about it and said that they understood that it might be a steep price for some, but that they hoped it would be affordable for some of their subscribers while still giving them the chance to produce high-quality content or something along those lines.
What I don't understand however is how this is supposed to be sustainable in the long run? Because if I'm someone who's scrolling Youtube and comes across one of their old videos, I'll watch them all there. If I'm scrolling and come across one of their newer videos, and see that the rest of those videos are behind a paywall, then I'm gonna continue to scroll, I won't pay $60 to watch someone I previously didn't really know.
I don't know businesses, especially businesses in creative fields, and definitely not USAmerican businesses in creative fields, so I'm not sure how this would work financially. However, I think there's one of two things they could have done to make it easier for us as fans to transition, as well as still earn them some of that extra revenue (to start with):
They could add a free subscription with ads on their streaming service. I don't know how easy that is, getting sponsors and incorporating pop-up ads on a service, but that's an option.
They could have started out by putting some of their bigger projects on the service, but still regularly making content on Youtube that was not as produced or financially
I think having their own streaming platform is a good idea because then they won't be bound by Youtube's restrictions and have more creative freedom, as well as the whole economic side of this. The way they're executing it however is just alienating and frankly a bit insulting to the fans who have been with them for so long and supported them through so much and now suddenly can't watch anything new anymore with barely any warning.
Yeah, this became very long but I had some thoughts that I just needed to air.
