Mansae Entertainment Interviews: SXSW 2018 Edition - Ann One

Another staff member and I went to SXSW Film and Music Festival in Austin, Texas and we got to catch up with Ann One.  She recently released a single ‘This Ain’t Love’ on March 1st. She was set to perform at KOCCA’s ‘Korea Spotlight’ during fellow labelmate, Junoflo’s set.

Ann One is a singer-songwriter on Feel Ghood Music, Tiger JK and Yoon Mirae’s label. She also works as their A&R manager. She has also produced songs as well. I actually found out about Ann One because I was just curious about Feel Ghood Music after Junoflo signing with them. I knew it was Tiger JK and Yoon Mirae’s label but I didn’t really know their artists besides Bizzy.

What inspired your last single?

I got the song and the lyrics came later. I know friends around me who has their man is cheating on them while they’re home and watching the kids so basically it’s inspired by friends. What they went through.. I want women to express their feelings strongly and lyrically.

What is it like to have multiple jobs?

I really love it. I feel like as women in the industry we don’t have as many options as men. They’re coming out with the #MeToo movement as well nowadays that’s what lead me to want to produce as well.

Would you release an full album?

It’s in the works but I’m going to split it up into two EPs probably.

Would you ever go on tour?

I would love to. I was going to be a background vocalist for Anderson Paak’s first tour but I was in Korea at the time. But I’d definitely love to go on tour and see the world.

Who is your favorite artist?

I tend to to like older artists. I’m really into jazz right now like Kiefer.  My absolute favorite singers are Chaka Khan and Whitney Houston, these are people who really have a voice and have perfected their craft.

What’s it like working for Yoon Mirae and Tiger JK?

She’s amazing, I’ve been friends with her for like 15 years. They’re really wonderful. They kind of let you do what you want but they’ll let you know straight up what’s going to hit on the charts. They know what’s commercial and whats not. They’re amazing people. I’ve worked with many different labels before and it’s rare to find a company like theirs. They’re the best at what they do.

As an A&R Manager is there any new talent/unknown talent you like?

Not in particular. We just added Los to Ghood Life and BB to Feel Ghood Music..Marshall hasn’t even debut yet. We’re working on them and working on pushing them out but we are always looking for special talent.

If possible would you do a duet with?

I really like what Dean is doing right now. I like really anyone whos soulful and crafty like Ro James. Dean is really talented and Daniel Caesar is as well.

Artist of the Month: 24K

Hello Mansaebebes’! We apologize for such a long hiatus from both T-Wonder and I. We are working on getting more writers so we can push out more material for you guys to read. 

Normally I do not write about idols, so I leave it to T-Wonder. I don’t listen to much idol groups nowadays besides the super popular groups like Twice, BLACKPINK, BTS, Got7, EXO, etc and my all time favorite group, Beast/Highlight.. As you guys have seen I mostly listen to hip hop. 

Studio PAV M&C, a company who hosted 24K World Tour ‘Still with 24U’, let us come as press for the first stop in Dallas. I’m so thankful to Studio PAV for letting us come because I got to know a group I wasn’t that familiar with which I ended up liking A LOT. My team member that I brought seemed to be really familiar with the group as she knew their songs. I knew about them since they debuted not long after the groups I’m more familiar with but I didn’t know their songs and only knew one member, Cory, because I’ve seen him in other idols vlogs on YouTube. 

So I went into this concert only knowing Cory. A Korean American guy who’s father named him Corey so when he calls him “Cory-ah” will be said out loud, which I thought was hilarious. So 24K debuted in 2012 and has gone through a couple of lineup changes. I have come to a conclusion that 24K is such an underrated group. Every member is super talented and works very hard. But isn’t that every idol group? They train from months to years. My heart just leans more toward 24K since I’ve seen them live. Apparently they are the first group to produce, write lyrics and choreograph their own music. Who else does that? My bias group Highlight/Beast just produces and write lyrics. Although they have a dancing machine of their own, they still hire choreographers.

24K surprised me a lot. Dallas was the first stop yet they still went really hard. I read there was a mishap in Puerto Rico where they technical difficulties with audio but they still carried on the show singing and dancing accapella. The boys give great fan service. I wish they’d get more recognition for their talent, hard work and pure hearts. 

If there was an opportunity for 24K to come again I would no doubt purchase a ticket. They give their all. Thank you 24K for such a wonderful show and thank you to Choeun Entertainment and Studio PAV M&C for the opportunity.
