It's been a while since I wished anyone a "happy new year". Because it's been a while I understood there's no magic into the "new year", nothing really changes when the clock strikes 12. This is no fairytale. But... There's a lot that can change in a single human being. There's magic in our veins that can only be seen when we look inside. When we do the work. When we take the steps. This year has been tough for everybody. In different scales and segments of life. And I could go on and on about all the anxiousness, sadness, despair and pain. But... What about the strength? Resilience? The moments you kept going even when you thought you could no more? There's light and hope in the simplest, smallest things. And this year we can see them. It's hard not having where to fall to. The distance can't be covered, the feelings do reach. But I miss the hugs, kisses, smiles. I miss the possibility of leaving and going where I'm sure I'm always welcomed, no matter what. Or when. It's hard not having your safety network around when you need it most. Being away from home isn't always beautiful views and exciting adventures. The colours are gone. All that's left is the cold. Endless cloudy days and sometimes, little snowflakes. It feels a lot like depression, this kaamos-aika. Tiredness that can't be overcome. Sunny days are rare over here. Especially now. It's so dark and rainy. It hasn't even snowed as much as last year. Now I do understand that when it snows, the days are brighter. These past couple of weeks haven't been easy. And it's even harder because my mind is often going on an unnecessary loop. So this is just a reminder to take my time. It's ok to take a break. Coming from the northeast of Brazil I didn't get to see season's changes. Where I used to live we had sun everyday for 12 hours, be it summer or winter. Trees didn't really change colours or leaves fall because it was always warm enough (winter didn't get below 24°C). Now here I am, amazed and mesmerized by every little thing. Did you know nature is magical?! It is. There's no poetry here. Just a flower picture since summer appeared. But it's almost gone. It's so weird. The sun would shine for 20 hours straight and it still wouldn't be warm enough. Nothing like where I used to be. And there, we only had 12 hours of light daily. It's so strange. The extreme differences. At one point it's too much light and then there's not enough. Everyday since midsummer it's been getting less and less and less... And it's still not warm enough. But the flowers are beautiful.
