What do you learn in art school? I mean, like, do you learn how to draw in a lot of different styles or is it more of art history?

Oh, thanks for asking! I’ll start my saying that my art school experience was a middle/high school, so I can’t speak for a typical art university experience. In short, a little of both? I mean, I took art history classes, but that’s, from my understanding, a separate degree from studio arts.

We learned the basic elements of art - shape, composition, color, texture, etc - and for most of the early years (grades 8-10 for me) we were doing still lives (so many still lives…) and other very technical assignments that introduced us to those concepts and honed our craft. Later years were basically free studio time with deadlines to show what we were working on, with the occasional assignment that was so loose it may as well not have existed (ie. make three oil paintings that are thematically connected).

We learned different mediums (I was actually a print maker back in school!) more than “styles”. If we ever learned a single specific style, it was to have us experiment with a physical technique, like using expressionism to teach us how changing the amount of paint on our brush affects our process, and how limiting a color palette forces you to observe your subject differently.

((To risk a tangent here bc I know it’s just the phrasing of the ask - the concept of an art style is… actually kinda frowned upon in an academic setting. The point is to have you learn the foundations so that you develop your own artistic voice, which is expected to change, so limiting yourself to one is style of expression is inherently stifling in some regards. That’s not to call it pointless, but yeah. Limiting.))

Sansa-Littlefinger Dark and Twisted parallel to Aegon-JonCon let me go Reddit lit analysis mode for a sec:

Lil Griff and Sansa both exiled royalty to some degree (not a common trope don’t fact check)

LF and Jon Con both untrusted/disgraced members of the small council for at least one king of Westeros. Also both struggling with weird unresolved crushes on a dead parent of their respective wards (played psychosexual for LF)

Guardian dyes child’s hair to match theirs under the ruse that they are the child’s parent to hide their identity (played psychosexual for LF). This is not coincidence bc I am very smart.

Weird unresolved crush on a dead parent maybe definitely plays into their motivation to keep their respective wards alive (do I need to say it)

Both have been on a boat. This happens nowhere else in the books ever don’t fact check thnx :)

Update

Hey y'all, I know I've been really inactive lately, especially with posting art. As of right now, it has been about half a year since I have posted a piece that I put more than like 10 minutes into, and that's because I've been in a pretty major art slump lately. Idea-wise and motivation-wise, I've fallen off since October, though I could see the signs of a slump even before that. I have a nasty habit of comparing my "success" (whatever that means) to others, and when a slump begins that only gets worse (cue a self-maintained downward spiral, etc etc). It happens. It's far from the first time for me, and far from the worst. I think I'm past the crest of it now, fortunately.

For those of you who sent me requests, you are not forgotten! Though extremely belated, I fully intend to finish all of my requests in the near future (and reminder that my ask-box is always open)!

I'm not going to be posting any more were-sigils stuff for the forseeable future. If you sent me an ask about it, I will respond privately, but that AU has really run its course and I'm ready to move past it. I don't own the AU, obviously, so if you feel so inclined to use the idea, go ahead! I'm very happy it resonated with so many people, but my time with it is closing.

I don't really watch a lot of movies, especially nothing newer than the last five years or so. I have a lot of comfort youtube videos and songs, but let's see how many movies I can name:

Lord of the Rings series (all of them) (only series I actually continually come back to tbh)

Nanny McPhee (2005) (visually stunning movie. the COLORS)

The Sound of Music (one of the few vhs tapes we had at home growing up, majorly nostalgic)

How to Train Your Dragon (first movie that I watched and actually thought "huh. that changed me a little")

... and End of Evangelion ???? (weird choice, I know, but it was so influential on me as a teen and now it's kinda nostalgic. otaku's first biblical symbolism)

I need to watch more movies....

Ask game!! Here's: 11 & 17?

(what fic or piece of art are you proud of making?, the thing in canon that everyone loves and that you also love)

11- I am proud of a lot of my art, but if I had to pick one piece it’s this one, which I lovingly call Daenerys Piece (to date, my only Dany art, which really needs to change lol). It took me just under a year to finish (on and off bc I’m a procrastinator) and in a way I see it as the culmination of my art education. A close second is this comic adjacent thing that I still really like.

17- gee, this might be the hardest question on the list, mostly because I don’t know if there’s any one thing in canon that everyone likes. This is going to sound corny and basic, but… the characters. The points of view. The way Tyrion’s chapters are so misleading and conniving that they actively confuse the reader until Martin finally wants you to know what’s going on. The way Sansa and Ned talk around their emotions to themselves, so that it’s only upon a second read that you actually get what they are saying. The POV trap that is Theon Greyjoy. Brienne. Cersei. The way the we only learned that she really genuinely believed she had seduced Ned by lamenting about her incestuous tendencies several books after it happened. Everything about Cersei. I could go on and on, but it’s that stuff that I always gush about when the books come up in conversation. Maybe it’s cheating to say that the characters are my favorite part of a character-driven story, but idk man Martin went fucking hard when he chose to write for over 20 points of view and kept them all distinct. Also Lady Stoneheart because the moment she was introduced took me OUT. On my work break no less! I should get workers compensation.

one of the first physical descriptors given of jon snow is in the comparison between him and robb, wherein robb is singled out as being the stronger (and is later called "strong" again when carrying bran up some stairs). so if jon is out here casually pulling giant spears out of the frozen ground which other men struggled to handle in teams…what incredible feats could robb stark have been capable of. why didn't he standing long jump across the hall at the red wedding to beat up walder frey

Okay no wait I'm having some Thoughts about this now. Like yeah, Tyrion, as someone with a deformity, is expected to be a jester about it. That's why he learned to do tricks - he made people laugh! He was the funny little guy at court! He did what he was expected to with his disability, which is to make a joke of it and dehumanize himself in the process.

But, like. No. He's in pain. He can't climb the stairs without getting cramps because the world refuses to accommodate him. Why would you expect him to do cartwheels and flips around the castle? He's disabled. He has mobility issues. GRRM (intentionally or otherwise) set us up with the one-two punch of meeting the expectation and immediately subverting it. Oh, you though Tyrion would be a wacky, witty trickster? So did he. And he internalized that.

Just remembered that Tyrion’s introduction to the story is him back-handspringing off of a fucking wall only to have nothing but bad knees and mobility issues for five whole books until it’s revealed that his secret parkour skills are one of the ten bajillion reasons his father wants him to eat poison and die. GOD
