THE ADVENTURE OF CHARLES AUGUSTUS MILVERTON - part one of several, because this is one of my favorite Holmes stories! Ever since I read it I had a feeling there was something more...personal...going on with Holmes's hatred for Milverton than simply a principled stand against blackmail. A lot of this is directly pulled from the books but of course I took it in my own direction!
This is in the Watson's sketchbook series, and specifically references the Hound of the Baskervilles entry in that series :)
also thank you to my friend Phoenix for reading this when it was in sketch phase and reassuring me that it made sense!

watson says he has a 'touch of Mr. Pickwick about him' so I tried to do Pickwick but...scary

THE VALLEY OF FEAR part one tbh there are so many iconic lines in this one (“you are scintillating this morning, Watson”) (“One more coruscation, my dear Watson - yet another brain-wave!”) it’s obnoxious
(This is part of the Watsons sketchbook series!)

helloooo this is a MASTER POST of my Sherlock Holmes annotations, aka shitpost doodles of my favorite parts with occasional headcanons. I will pin this so it's available and update it as I go because this feels like it's becoming a full series, god help me.
I'm reading the stories in the order they occurred (according to Baring-Gould, who I am currently arm wrestling in the astral plane over how many wives Watson had) so that's how I will present them!
EDIT: decided to draw them in the order that makes sense to me, Baring-Gould you’re too silly
EDIT 2: this is basically a webcomic at this point, with ongoing continuity and a romantic storyline that can be enjoyed if you read in order. I did not intend this, but I have Sherlock Holmes disease and there's only one cure (doing this)

Hi, new Tumblr friends! I thought I would re-introduce myself, since there are a lot of new people here.
I'm Dona, a 30-something freelance illustrator from Serbia. I do a variety of art - fantasy illustrations, cartoony stream art, character sheets, and so much more. I have a background working on videogames, but I've decided to focus on art only and have not regretted it since. Hobbies include web design, photography and reading.
My Tumblr is a mix of my art, informative and funny/cozy posts, a sprinkle of fandom nonsense, and of course plenty of others' art that I find inspiring. I have a portfolio website that is updated roughly once a month, usually when I put my my monthly wrap-up post on Ko-Fi. My older blogs become public after 2 years, while the current ones are a little treat for the supporters. :)
I offer:
Commissions!
Ko-Fi tip or monthly sub!
Digital shop! (fanart wallpapers are always free!)
VGen!
Thank you for the support! 💗

Another unexpected place to find ACD: Fletcherizing.
What it means, basically: “One-fifth of an ounce of the midway section of the young garden onion, sometimes called ‘challot,’ has required 722 mastications before disappearing through involuntary swallowing.”
Horace Fletcher's theory that you must chew your food into liquid to fully take advantage of its nutritional value had many followers, including, quoting Mary Roach, "Henry James, Franz Kafka, the inevitable Sir Arthur Conan Doyle."
I love how "inevitable" is used here. Also, I am grateful for ACD not getting Fletcherizing into Dr. Watson's everyday health-food recommendations.

Me, after practicing drawing faces for a couple of hours:
How do people even recognize and distinguish faces??? How do people tell characters apart despite all the drastically different styles???? I need a philosophical answer for the mystery of human faces!!!

Some time ago, I asked if anyone would be interested in a SHCO/SHTA fanweek.
The post got more attention than anticipated, and I am happy to announce that a fanweekend is on the way!
The event is planned for the second May weekend ( May 10 - May 12) this year.
The theme of the event has not been decided yet, but I will start a poll soon so we can all decide on the theme together 😊
Last but not least, the event will not focus on SHCO/SHTA only. Fans of the older games are very welcome to participate as well!

Been reading this little fun book and only a few pages in our poor ACD had already been asked:
to introduce assistant/housekeeper/etc. to Sherlock Holmes. (And when mentioning the woman loves "bees" the word is capitalized and in quotation...I don't know what to make of it 🤔)
to get Holmes' autograph for readers. (Should be simple enough lol)
to write more SH books. (Of course! I'd be surprised if none of these letters turned up)
to send some copies of his books to a poor girl, better if translated into Russian. (Phew, who am I to complain readers requesting translation when ACD himself had to face such requests as well!)
to check out a treasure map somehow procured from the Admiralty, which was cyphered and needed to be decoded. (Man, leave him alone; he had already made enough money from selling SH books!)
to solve a case in which a Polish prince was murdered. (Fan fact, he got a detective work request--none other than the disappearance of Agatha Christie--even after death.)
Lmao it's funny but I feel sorry for ACD. I don't blame him for hating Holmes in the end, if only for having to deal with these letters!
Can't wait to see what this book has in store for me. But at least after part one the letters were not sent to Holmes-tormented ACD anymore but to some secretaries who got paid to deal with this headache and/or amusement.

As someone who gets into SH fandom NOT through the BBC show AND just on time when it enters the public domain, I swear I can see the smile of Fortuna herself.
I never watched BBC Sherlock or engaged in the fandom and being into original Sherlock Holmes in the year 2024 feels like frolicking in a meadow that’s grown up over a battlefield. Occasionally a war weary veteran with shadows in their eyes will find me. “Don’t you know what happened in this place?” they ask me. “I literally don’t,” I reply, and go back to drawing guys from 1895.

Not very often do you get to see the ghosts of Allan Poe and Lovecraft arguing about whose books are scarier and ending up agreeing on the most unexpected scariest book. (no spoiler!)
Oh, and Terry Pratchett playing chess with Douglas Adams XD
I love the goofy humor of The Darkside Detective lol

In the general sense of "content creators", they are trying to make money. The feedback and interaction is a means to an end--popularity leads to profit.
That's not the case for most fanfic writers. The "profit" is the interactions and feedback, the community of the fandom, and the friends we make. Yeah the writers write because they love the characters and ships and all that, but there is always a social need, at least for me and a lot of people I know of.
As a writer I don't feel I need to be praised by the readers--there is not even a clear line distinguishing readers and writers. It's just one person putting up an idea and some elaboration of the said idea, and others getting interested. And they talk, like how people make friends and build community. Some "readers" eventually start to learn to write and there is more spreading and exchanging of good ideas creations feelings and all that. A positive loop.
Without the sense of community, I can't say I'd stop writing just because of that, but it's like a big chunk of motivation for writing is taken out. Much like workers getting a cut of their wages, and no wonder more and more of them don't want to work and quit often.
Labor of love is a thing, but it doesn't mean love is an infinite recourse of creation. It's motivation and payoff, and it burns out, actually, rather quickly. Without a meaningful community and connection all loves die sooner or later. Apparently the trend is they die pretty fast in fandom these days. At this point, I am not sure who would feel sorrier tho, the "writers" or the "readers".
too sleepy to elaborate at this time but I miss the old fandom culture of interacting with fanfic writers and fanfic artists as members of the fandom community who enjoyed engagement and discussion and feedback instead of the modern trend of seeing us as content creators up on a pedestal who don't need positive feedback but DO need to churn out constant content to feed the a03 machine
