Yeah, I know you didn't mean it like that but you can only point to "bourgeois morality" so many times before it starts to feel like you're just saying "I'm sorry you got offended" you know? Like every time I try to express that some basic social decorum is necessary to preserve relationships I care about you start misquoting Bakunin. And like look you have a lot of positive qualities but I don't think this is working anymore. We both know it hasn't been good for a long time.

It’s pretty well known that many English words meaning “bad” or “evil” ultimately trace back to the English-speaking world’s obsession with social class. “Villain”, for example, was originally just another word for peasant, and even the word “mean” simply meant “commonplace” before it picked up its connotations of brutishness and nastiness by association with, well, commoners.

Today, however, I learned one that maybe isn’t so well-known: apparently, the word “lewd” originally meant “not a priest”.

Like… I can see how you’d get from that original meaning to the one we have today, from an etymological standpoint, but it still raises several questions!

I understand the appeal of wanting every adult hero to instinctively adopt teenage Peter Parker, but can it really beat the hilarity of acknowledging that at 15 Peter was 5'10", unusually buff, went by a moniker with Man in it, wore a creepy full face mask, and had a tightly guarded secret identity and probably a Queens accent thick enough to have come out of a jello mold, and adult heroes reasonably responded to him by going, “Wow, this grown man is an immature asshole for no reason.”
