so I realize all sci-fi is ultimately a parable for the human experience but even within those parameters, the way Mulder and Scully experience defeat and loss is so human. most other genre shows (many of them great–the show I’m thinking of is Fringe, which did this at top level) throw roadblocks in front of their characters like time travel or alternate-universe doubles. for Mulder and Scully it’s cancer, it’s losing a child or the government taking your job. even abduction is treated like a missing person’s case. they investigate realms of extreme possibility but exist in the world of actual possibility and I think that’s part of why they’ve stuck with us. this job takes from them in the same way the world takes from us. we speak the same language

the best part of each x-files episode is waiting for the end to see who's gonna do the sign off report cause when it's scully it's usually something like "once again, despite my partner's opinion to the contrary, i cannot confidently say that there is any scientific basis to the theory that alien ghost blood was responsible for the disappearance of the crack in the liberty bell" meanwhile if it's mulder we get gems like "are we alone in the universe? what does it truly mean to be alone? did bigfoot fuck the speaker of the house? as always i am left with more questions than answers and don't know who to trust and i think scully changed her shampoo and..."

I’ve never jived with the idea that Fox Mulder is a sex machine or, forgive the pun, a fox. I think he wants to be when he’s a young man. He studies how to be that person, approximates most of the right moves, and then the thrill is gone. He ditches more lunch dates and regular dates than he actually attends, and that plus the spooky appellation through the FBI means that through the grapevine he acquires a reputation as hard to get at best, a cad at worst. If you think about it, did he ever really see a healthy romantic relationship growing up? Sure, his parents loved one another once upon a time but there were secrets upon secrets between them both, and after Samantha was taken everything crumbled. Fox Mulder is not a stud. Fox Mulder is a mess.
