Alright, so there's been a lot of chatter about some of the most common racist takes in the fandom lately, and I know most people aren't engaging in good faith but I'm gonna spell some things out anyway. Here's a handy-dandy White Fan's Intro to Racist Fanon 101

Why is it racist to depict Ed as uncontrollably violent?

Because he's not actually depicted that way in the show. OFMD goes out of its way to depict Ed's relationship with violence as complex and intensely traumatic for him. Because he has so many hangups around violence, Ed is one of the least violent characters in a show full of violent characters. He is always shown giving people many chances before they're able to push him into reacting with violence.

Even if you think you're just doing a character study on a guy who is really very complex and nuanced, please take the time to consider if you're assigning more weight to Ed's violent actions than those of other characters or assuming he's worse than he actually is (for example, Ed never physically hurt the crew during his kraken spiral, just Izzy. His crime was being a shitty boss, not going on mindlessly violent rampages).

What do other common fanon depictions of Ed that are racist look like?

The biggest ones are depicting Ed as untidy/messy, as illiterate, and as needing a white man (most often Izzy) to clean up after him. I hope I shouldn't have to spell out why these are racist, but please keep an eye out for them in the fanon you consume so you can be critical of how you respond when they pop up.

Are you saying that all Izzy fans are racist?

Liking a character is morally neutral. Insisting that the viewpoint of an antagonistic character is the lens through which the show should be understood, though, especially when that antagonistic character's whole deal in the first season of the show was trying to control the behavior of the brown lead so he could gain power for himself, however...

Just please consider - why do you find Izzy's tears more deserving of sympathy and compassion than Ed's?

But my hot take/fic/meta doesn't say anything about Ed's skin color!

It doesn't have to. Most of the racist takes/fic/meta out there don't mention Ed's skin color explicitly. Racism doesn't just look like saying "this character is a brown man so he's bad." Everyone who grows up in a racist society (that's everyone on the planet, btw, you included) has biases to unlearn, and those biases impact how you interact with the world around you, including with the media you consume.

The thing is, OFMD isn't a subtle show. It's very consistent with telling us who Ed is, how he responds to situations, and why he behaves the way he does. If you find it easier to throw all that aside in favor of believing what a white antagonistic character tells you about him, then you should really take a bit to examine that.

And here's the most important thing to keep in mind:

This is not about you.

Trust me, it has to be pretty damn bad for fans of color to call out racism in fandom. Every time we do, we know we're gonna harrassment and just some truly awful shit in our inboxes. But you, random white fan who Did A Racism? No one is out to get you. No one thinks you're an awful person for including a racist trope in your stuff, we just wish you'd examine it so we can make this fandom a better place for everyone.

I have had amazing discussions with white fans who saw my posts on fandom racism and wanted a sensitivity read or a check so they could fix an instance where they uncritically included a racist trope. But most people who make similar mistakes will just double down and insist they didn't do anything wrong, and that makes fandom a worse place for all of us.

Fans of color deserve to feel safe and included in this fandom, and we're just tired of feeling like we have to beg to get some circles to see poc as people. You can do your part by being critical of these tropes and your reactions to them when they pop up.

Ballad Of Songbirds And Snakes Theory (Spoilers obviously)

(I'll be using evidence from both book and film)

I genuinely believe that Strabo Plinth (Sejanus' dad) has something to do with career districts having special academy training pre games, especially in two.

Firstly, it is stated that Strabo is very in line with the Capitol and the president of Panem as he sold ammunition and weaponry to the Capitol and was very passionate about this as well as conforming to Capitol ideologies within both book and film. Strabo is also in lign with the games as he has funded them as well as rigged them (making it so Marcus would be reaped as punishment to Sejanus) for his and his families name.

Another reason is that he has done similar things in canon. In the books, when Coriolanus and Sejanus are Peacekeepers, Sejanus earns the name "Bull's-eye" due to his skills in firearms and his accuracy as a result of it. When asked by Coriolanus, Sejanus said that his father taught him how to use weaponry since he was young (and we know Coriolanus likes to take inspiration from those around him and twist it into ideas). Whilst it is to do with the fact that Sejanus is the heir to the Plinth fortune, it shows that he isn't above training children into using weaponry.

However there are other reasons I believe this without the Plinths being directly linked. For example, District 2 is the District with the most victors ever; if Strabo did at least influence the training academies it would make sense that they would have more victors as Strabo has the money to fund it and the academies could have started in District 2.

Additionally, District 2 is the one District that is closely aligned with the Capitol (Haymitch saying that they can't be trusted as allies due to their association) and if they have this history of being the most likely to survive and having such social influence that was probably instilled after these years.

Also, the tenth Hunger Games is the game where we can see the career pack start to be fleshed out with Coral and Mizzen forming their group of tributes so it was around this time that alot of change and influences happened within the games and the arena itself. So it wouldn't be out the ordinary to believe that the training academies where made as a way to make the games more entertaining, especially with their now being bidding and sponsors starting to be implemented and encouraged in the Capitol.

Whilst I don't believe Strabo would open the academy themselves as he didn't want to be associated with District 2 and forbade The Plinths from going back, I can believe that with Snow having the power and ideologies that match with Strabo's, I do believe Snow used the Plinth fortune and Strabo as a way to have academies implemented into the new career Ditsricts.

(also I don't know if it's made obvious in the books that Strabo is an influence and I'm an idiot who didn't pick up on canon so yeah)

Honestly, yeah. I'm sorry if I came off as that I was just speaking from that. And to be honest I shouldn't of said that due to having bad personal experiences that everyone feels the same way, I've always just never been able to find someone to talk to happily or even decently about my health.

Also I forgot that Heimindinger was out of town, so that's also on me and how Heimindinger can read Viktor incredibly well to the point that with nearly nothing to indicate Viktors difference. So you're right on that.

And you're right it could entirely symbolise on how noone sees Viktor or even cares to notice, even his best friend who is like a brother to him. Along with the classism and Jayce and Viktor have both drifted apart from one another at this point and as you said, he is possibly in shock so I wouldn't put him against it.

Knowing how the show has dealt with things before, it is entirely possible that it is to symbolise many things as the statement you've made about Viktor being seemingly invisible and lonely.

Again I apologize if I came off as condescending or arrogant that my own personal issues are everyone's and I shouldn't have immediately gone saying something without thinking of others with similar or different chronic illnesses. I shouldn't just assume it with everyone.

I'm glad that you've actually told me upfront though since I've never picked up on it before. So I'm glad we had this discussion and you correcting me, I was wrong on those parts. Though I do hope Riot either explains this but it'd be interesting if it could still be up for interpretation.

As someone who wears a brace, it can be quite annoying and depraving having people constantly ask about your health even if you are in a horrible state. The recognition is nice but can be demeaning. So my best guess is that Jayce and Heimindinger possibly noticed but didn't want to pry and let Viktor have his health privatised since it's confidential information of Viktor.

For the glove, yeah it is subtle but Viktor probably said he burnt it or cut it when working in the lab.

Hope this helps clear it up a bit lol. At first I was caught off guard too.

My ideas for the Arcane Actors AU:

Adult Vi: The actor everyone simps for. Like the Florence Pugh or the Ryan Reynolds of the cast. She also makes the rude jokes to other actors and pushed for her character to be gay. Like she had to also train and learn boxing for her scenes as well as she fought it'd be good representation with having a buff actress.

Jinx: The actor that steals so many props from set. She has a collection of the bombs and notebooks and Hexcrystals from the scenes she was in. She gets told off for it but does it anyways.

Adult Caitlyn: The uncontroversial actor. Everyone loves her character, everyone loves her. She probably also is the very charitable actor who helps discuss serious issues in her interviews and ties it in with the show. She also did archery and guns classes before the show since she wanted to be a cop at one point.

Adult Mel: Probably the actor who is known for having the best outfits. She is also the multiple trick actor (She could possibly also sing). At the met gala she is the only one who fills the genre to a T. She's also probably been nominated as the hottest female awards on separate occasions.

Sevika: The actor who is clearly at their wits end with the other cast members or is a cinnanom roll. She's also probably diverse as a POC actor who is an amputee. She also probably is one of the more responsible of the actors.

Adult Viktor: He is probably the actor who just sits there spacing out half the time as well as spontaneously having numerous PhDs. So really he should be getting asked questions but isn't. He was also was a runner up for the Tumblr sexy man. He also posts about C!Jayvik constantly to the point the director told him off for lieing about what happens in the show. He posted about that too.

Adult Jayce: He's the actor that is socially awkward. But in the sweet way. Sometimes in an interview he'd say something and go "Wait was that a spoiler??". He also probably struggles to act confident in the council and negotiation scenes. Probably got an award for his acting in the second episode with Jinx.

Silco: The actor who is a grouch. Makes fun of the cast and jokes about them. He probably got cancelled on Twitter at one point (Vi and Viktor had a blast on Twitter during this time). Though he does have a soft spot for Jinx and Powder. He also talks about random stuff with Vander on interviews consistently that aren't even relevant.

Vander: The actor who adopted all the other actors with Silco. He says he doesn't have a favourite child but he isn't afraid to put them up for adoption if they get on his nerves for too long.

Arcane Characters Random Headcanons:

Caitlyn:

I feel like Caitlyn is absolutely horrible at baking. She just can't wrap her head around it and it annoys her because she's great at instructions and cooking. It also give Vi more fuel for her 'Cupcake' nickname for Caitln.

Jinx

Jinx has dyed her hair before. Maybe highlights of half n half, but she's definitely done it before to try and find herself in different ways. She ends up discovering that she'd rather get tattoos then dye her hair.

Jayce

I headcanon that Jayce has heterochromia (two different eye colours) but he got insecure about it and instead uses contacts to hide it and to keep up the symmetrical look. Only Viktor, Caitlyn, Ximena and Mel know of his heterochromia.

Viktor

Viktor has the most random taste buds. Even though he rarely eats, when he does it's completely contradictory. Probably from living in both Piltover and Zaun he's combined the two.

Vi

Vi is partially deaf in her right ear from the explosion. It's why she keeps extra guard because she's paranoid that people could sneak up on her easier.

Ekko

Ekko is extremely silent. Like you won't notice him coming into a room unless you see him do so. He picked up on it when following people like Jayce, Silco, Sevika ect. When it's Vi he makes sure she hears him enter the room or gives her some knowledge.

Silco

He goes out of his way to piss off someone. He generally doesn't care about people so by annoying them and starting arguments it fills up his time. Extra points if it's someone high ranking.

Mel

She fidgets with her jewelry constantly to help calm her nerves. She does paint but when in a council meeting or when she's far from the studio it's easier to fidget with her ring or earrings instead.

Okay hear me out Jayvik and Meljay lovers. I have a crossover AU idea. An The Phantom Of The Opera(2004) inspired AU.

Jayce is in the place of Christine. I would've put Mel here BUT Jayce has alot of similarities with Christine. Both lost their father at a young age and they have a friend who is like a sister too them. They also both just want freedom after being pushed into the lime light.

Viktor is in the place of The Phantom. They both had been helped by someone of status and they both had a poor background. Viktor and the phantom also both have a deformity that they think prevents them from their goal and ends up mad due to it. And they are both considered geniuses.

Mel is in the place of Viscount Raoul. I feel like the All I Ask Of You would be really pretty with Mel singing. Both Raoul and her also come from wealthy backgrounds and act as a patron to their partner. Both are kind of gaslighting their partner but it's true that they genuinely care for them. They both have a history with war and violence with Raoul being a Duke and Mel being a councilor.

Just a reminder, since Steven Grant is autistic, that means Marc Spector and Jake Lockley are also autistic. In a system they either all have autism or none of them do!

Some alters may show more traits and other alters may mask more, since autism is still a spectrum. So Steven may show more signs and Marc may mask more but they all are autistic.
