32 + kisses + japril

32. A kiss so passionate, so perfect - that after they part, neither person can open their eyes for a few moments afterwards.

(Set in the S9 finale, after April has confessed her feelings for Jackson.)

It’s still storming when she walks outside of Grey Sloan. The rain mixes with her tears, enough that she can pretend that any onlooker won’t realize she’s crying. She sits down on one of the benches, setting her head in her hands and trying to pull herself together. Normally when she was upset, she would throw herself into work, but Jackson is in the pit, with Stephanie, as is a newly-broken-up-with Matthew, and she doesn’t think she can handle all of that right now.

(She’s not sure if she’ll ever be able to handle all of that, but she’s going to have to try. She can’t keep making an ass out of herself.)

Thankfully, with the storm, nobody pays her any mind. Her scrubs are soaked from the rain, and she is sure that she looks like a mess (and that probably wouldn’t bother her, but she’s a professional and she doesn’t want to have a breakdown at work in front of patients). She is cold, and she is tired, and she wants nothing more than to just go home.

Shivering, she checks her phone, sees that she still has three hours left of her shift, and starts crying even harder.

Jackson finds her like this, sobbing in the middle of a storm and shaking from the cold. She thinks that he’s going to give her a pitying speech about how it’s best that they be friends or something, so she isn’t expecting it when his lips crash into hers.

April makes an undignified sound, standing up and kissing him back, arms around his neck. The kiss is wet because they’re both soaked (and also due to the fact that she’s still crying because she can’t just turn the waterworks off and on at will). She’s a lot shorter than him, so she stretches on the tips of her toes even though he’s making the effort to lean down.

She pulls away first, because she needs to breathe. Her eyes stay closed while she tries to do just that, holding onto him as if to keep him from moving. When she finally opens her eyes, his own are still shut.

As soon as he opens them, he tells her, “I broke up with Stephanie.”

“I broke up with Matthew,” she responds.

“Where does that leave us?”

Where, indeed?

There was definitely something wrong with her.

She had seen Jackson in many relationships over the years, most of them casual flings that last a couple weeks at a time. There were a few people that had lasted past that threshold, and she’d paid attention to how he acted in those relationships in particular. It wasn’t even intentional that she had paid attention, but she blamed it on curiosity and drunken rambling from her best friend about the women he dated.

April hadn’t seen him get jealous in any of his other relationships. With Lexie, sure, he’d gotten frustrated having a mentor that was in love with his girlfriend. And he’d told her once about a kiss between Drs. Edwards and Ross, where he’d nearly broken up with the former (and wouldn’t that have saved everyone a lot of trouble, where two breakups didn’t have to happen at her wedding).

Jackson just really wasn’t the jealous type.

Except when it came to her.

And, okay, this might make her a bad person, but it made her feel special. Spending so many years of her life never feeling that way by a partner made it to where it was just really nice when she finally did.

So she kind of liked it when he got jealous.

It wasn’t like she’d gone out of her way to get him to feel jealous. No, they were married (again, and happily), and he had no reason to believe that she had feelings for anybody other than him. It just so happened that they were at some banquet, sitting across from Tom Koracick, and he made a bad joke about a very regrettable decision April had made earlier on in her sex life (in other words, referencing the fact that she had indeed slept with Koracick during a breakdown).

To be honest, April had mostly forgotten that experience (or mostly blocked it out, who knows), but she sensed Jackson’s irritation from beside her. She didn’t pay attention to whatever her husband said in response, because his hand was on her thigh, jealous and possessive and—

She was going to need to make an excuse to get them both out of there.

4 + Kisses + Japril

4. An accidental brush of lips followed by a pause and going back for another, on purpose.

It’s a reflex.

At least that’s what she tells herself.

Living together, raising a child together, going through all of these familiar emotions together. All of the conflicting feelings swirl together until the one that eclipses everything else is just confusion.

Their daughter is in another room, asleep after they’d worked to try to calm her down for hours. When Harriet had finally fallen asleep, they’d sat down next to one another in his living room. They’re both tired, but he has emails to respond to and she is working up the courage to ask him if he could check if her abdomen looks infected.

“What’s wrong?” Jackson eventually asks, not looking up from his phone. “I can feel you staring at me.”

And maybe she’s staring at him for the wrong reasons, so she finds the courage she’d been looking for. “Can you look at my stomach?”

He sets down his phone immediately. “Are you bleeding? Do we need to go to the ER?”

“We’re fine,” she hurries to say. “I just wanted a second look.”

“Okay.” He relaxes a little. “Sure.”

She pulls up her shirt enough that he can see where the traumatizing emergency c-section had occurred. He leans forward, studying the stretch of skin intently.

Their faces are close together when he looks back up at her face. His voice sounds strangled. “It looks fine.”

“Good.” She stands up, feeling unsteady. “I’m going to go to bed.”

“Sure.”

And, okay, it’s stupid that she forgets for a few moments that they’re just friends, that they’re divorced, but she acts on instinct, leaning down and kissing him goodnight. For just a second, their mouths brush.

She backs away immediately.

An apology is on her lips but then he pulls her down and kisses her, and there’s nothing accidental about it. She doesn’t back away this time, setting her hand on his cheek, and kissing him back.

50. A kiss, followed by more that trail down the jaw and neck.

“We have to be quiet,” April whispers against his mouth. “You locked the door, right?”

Jackson nods, walking her back until she falls down on the small bed behind her. She pulls him down with her, sighing at the feeling of his body covering hers.

“Quiet,” she repeats.

His eyes flash with amusement. “I can be quiet. Can you?”

April’s face heats. She doesn’t respond to him, grabbing his shirt and pulling him back down. Their lips meet, and she slips her tongue into his mouth.

Determined not to let him win, she stays silent for all of thirty seconds, but then his body presses against her. A small whine escapes, and she feels him smile against her mouth.

“You’re so adorable,” he murmurs, dragging his mouth down her jaw. His breath is warm against her skin, and the feeling of stubble lightly scratching her causes a shiver to crawl up her spine.

His palms are on either side of her waist, caging her against the on-call room bed. She tries to capture his lips again, but he softly commands her to be still and she listens. Jackson’s mouth travels down again, and his teeth lightly graze her neck.

“Keep going,” she pleads.

He pulls away, grinning. “I don’t know. Can you be quiet?”

Tbh Don’t even know who half those ships are. Stopped watching GA after what they did to Sarah/Jessica. I only watched Japril scenes since. Like I don’t have time for a show that can do that to such wonderful ladies. And from what I hear it’s all crap now anyways and on its last leg 🤷🏽‍♂️ I will always love Sasse/Japril though

That’s super valid! I don’t ever rewatch that period after April and Arizona first leave because it irritates me that they got rid of them. I will say that I enjoy the new cast and season 19 got me excited for the show in a way I hadn’t been since April and Arizona’s departure. Still, the golden era of grey’s for me will always be S5-S9.
