Why are creators always begging for reblogs?

 This is a question I see a lot, and a point I don’t think is properly articulated in a lot of the other posts, so let’s see if I can help clear things up for people who are newer to tumblr.

 It’s not just an attention thing, though the interaction is always lovely.

 We’re begging for reblogs because of how tumblr works. Your dashboard, with exception to the ‘based on your likes’ posts and ads, is only built on posts/reblogs of the people you follow, not their likes. There’s no algorithm to it, if your mutual/the cool person you follow reblogs or makes something, it gets put on your dashboard. The only way you see posts someone else likes, that I’m aware of, is directly in their blog, and even then, only if they have themes and settings that support it. A lot of people, myself included, don’t go into individual blogs but keep track of things in the dashboard instead. As I understand it, the popular posts and trending page use the number of reblogs to sort posts and don’t factor in likes in the algorithm at all.

 So reblogs are the most reliable way for us to expand our audiences and reach more people with our work. Reblogs are also a large part of what puts content on people’s dashboards, including your own.

 (I’d also like to add that reposting and reblogging are not the same thing. Reposting is when you copy someone’s work and make a brand new post. Reblogging is when you press the little square-shaped button at the bottom and reblog it to your own blog. If you see an artist say ‘no reposting’ they’re just asking you not to steal their work, you’re usually good to reblog it if you’d like.)

 That being said, your blog is still your blog at the end of the day, and if you don’t want to reblog something you don’t have to. Reblogs are important for creators and a person’s blog is their own space are not mutually exclusive statements and should not be treated as such. To that end, I’d like to talk about some of the other ways you can support your favorite creators.

1. Comments - Even a keyboard smash or a ‘good work’ can really lift a creator’s mood and make them feel more seen.

2. If the posts don’t fit your aesthetic, then tell people about them. Maybe the creators’ work fits your one mutuals’ blog perfectly. Maybe you know one friend who’d be really into it, but it won’t work with your fandom blog. It helps increase the creator’s audience too.

3. Likes let us know that you saw the post and, well, liked it. ^^

4. If it’s a writer you really admire, but their writing won’t fit with your blog’s aesthetic, you can send a message for them through @writeblrsupport to let them know how much you like their writing. Other people will also see those messages and maybe go and check them out. (There might be blogs like that for artists and other kinds of creators too? I’m not sure, though.)

5. You can send them asks telling them that you like their work and what you like about it.

hi i have this medical thing (i’m getting tests done still) but i get super nauseous every night and it sucks so much. i keep a bucket beside my bed in case i throw up, which isn’t much but still lol. maybe something about the boys soothing you when you’re nauseous or something I don’t know
