John Mayer - Dear Marie (Track 2 of Paradise Valley)

“Dear Marie” is the second track off Paradise Valley. The song is heartbreakingly wistful, relatable and incredibly nostalgic. It acts simultaneously as an ode to the narrator’s first love and as a reflection of the narrator’s momentary doubts and insecurities. “Dear Marie” is a beautiful song largely because of Mayer’s understated and simple lyrics. The lyrics are relatively clear and unambiguous; and are mostly repeated within the four sections, in order to enhance the emotional connection and understanding that the listener has to the track.

The instrumentation in “Dear Marie” is quite soothing and mellow: percussion instruments (that sound like shakers), sharply clicking drums, gentle guitar strains, muted keyboards and the bluesy strains of a pedal steel guitar dominate most of the track. In the musical interlude within the last minute of the track, the instrumentation builds and crescendos, complementing Mayer’s higher pitched backing vocals, before drifting and fading in the background.
