THREE UNIQUE TALES. ONE FANTASY WORLD. A SECRET TO UNCOVER.
Here's a peek at two of the characters: Ocellia Flicke & Dackon!
TW: Blood, Murder, Cannibalism(ish)
Rot was at home on Ocellia’s tongue, like a dessert she indulged in daily, an aftertaste she would never wash away.
She craved it more than she craved blood, more than she craved the fish she tore apart with shark-teeth, more than she craved the sea-flowers of her abandoned home, so deep in the ocean that the water was as inky black as midnight.
Rot. Rot. Rot.
Wherever Ocellia went, she chased the rot. That was all she had ever craved, despite what her sister thought.
And she had found it.
Ocellia popped her head above the water, keeping her dark, dark eyes on the ship she trailed after, stinking of sweat and blood and rot, stinking of victims and violence and pirates.
She had eaten a few pirates. They were rotten to the soul.
Giggling, Ocellia popped back underwater, and trailed after the sailing ship. Water swirled through her fingers like wind, ready to drown more sailors than she could count. How easy would it be to rip them to shreds? How would their innards taste on her tongue?
Ocellia rolled over, and then darted closer to the ship, pressing her palms against the hull as if the life that thrummed within was tangible.
Her long tongue darted to wet her lips.
And then something was dropped over the side of the ship.
Ocellia gasped, twirling around, and watched the body fall beneath the waves, freshly drowning and freshly bleeding.
Her dark eyes lit up, and with the twist of her wrist, the waves dragged the half-corpse over to her. It struggled, the silly thing, but Ocellia sank her teeth into its neck, letting the blood and rot spill onto her tongue and down her wet, wet throat.
Delicious. Delicious. Delicious.
Did the little pirates know she was there? Did the little pirates think she was some god of the waves? Were the little pirates going to sacrifice their own people to her? Did they—did they—were they—
Ocellia laughed, as free as a fish, and darted back up to the surface, popping her head through the waves. Her eyes landed on—
Oh!
Ocellia grinned with pretty shark-teeth, and locked gazes with the blood-eyed pirate with his blood-red hair. He stared down at her with nothing of note on his face. Calculation, mostly.
“Hello!” Ocellia called. “Are you here to fill my stomach?”
“Are you here to fill mine?”
Giggling, Ocellia shook her head, spraying seawater and blood across the hull of the ship. “Not ‘til I’m ready to die!”
The pirate did not respond to that, not initially. When he did, it seemed as if he had never pondered anything quite so thoroughly. He drummed his fingers on the side of his ship, displaying gold rings that caught sunbeams like those scattered across the sea.
“You’re not going to kill us,” he said.
“And how do you know that?”
His rings twitched. They caught the light – and Ocellia’s keen eyes – once again. She swam a little closer.
“Can I have a pretty ring?” she asked, using her sweetest voice, the one that had never been genuine in the slightest, not even when she had been but an innocent infant.
The pirate raised an eyebrow. “No.”
“Why not?”
“They’re mine.”
“But could they be mine?”
The pirate tilted his head, looking over Ocellia with an odd expression on that marble-cold face, something that lingered between considering and condescending. “If you can steal them,” he said, his voice as flat as their world of Ungode.
Ocellia flashed her teeth, coated with the blood of the man they had just thrown overboard. “I can do that.”
He folded one hand over the other. “But wouldn’t that bore you?”
She paused, and she blinked. “Huh?”
“Wouldn’t that bore you, to slaughter pirates in the safety of your own home?” he asked. “If you could even succeed, that is. Which you, without question, will not.”
“Oh, I could! I’m really, really sure that I could!”
Finally, the pirate rolled those crimson eyes, moving in a way that made the gold in his hair glitter. “Die trying then, little sea-beast. I’ll feed your bones to my pet.”
“Pet?”
“A true captain has many pets,” he said. “Those who will obey them without hesitation, without question. I’m sure you, like the rest of your kind, have few of those, if any at all.”
“I don’t need pets. I can gnaw on my own bones. And I can gnaw on your pretty, pretty jewellery.” She wished to snatch it with her claws and fill her stomach with that gold on his hands.
“Fine,” he said. “You can die as meaninglessly as you lived.”
An invitation to battle, Ocellia was sure. An invitation she wished to take and fulfil until the only things that littered the sea-floor was wooden planks and pretty, pretty bones.
Ocellia would have all the rot she had always craved.
But something about that, in Ocellia’s twirling mind – which was very rarely filled with any knowledge at all – did not sit just right.
She cared not for meaning. In truth, she hardly knew what that meant, especially when spilled from the lips of that blood-painted captain, likely a follower of Blood just as she was one of Water.
But the gold on his fingers caught her gaze more than true sunlight ever could. It shone and it sparkled more than any undersea treasure she had found. And she had explored many a cave.
She wanted that gold.
She wanted it. She wanted it. She wanted it.
Wait. No. That was not what Ocellia wanted.
She wanted adventure.
And so she blurted out, “take me with you!”
