HACKS APPRECIATION WEEK — Day 5: Favourite Object or Location The Salt & Pepper Shakers aka the Jean Valjean tchotchke or whatever. 

I can’t say it much better then Hannah herself did in this interview:

I’m having moments like I’m waking up in the middle of the night and being like, “Are the pepper shakers Ava and Deborah?!” And they’re like, “Yes.” I texted Paul, Lucia and Jen they’re like, yeah. There are so many things that I’m looking back on and just being like “Oh my God, the dynamics, the layers.” It totally, I was like, “Oh, this is a literal rom-com.”

We are absolutely spoiled for impeccable set design and props and colours and lighting and like the one percenters that go into making a good piece of media great. Into making it art and in all of that I think that the pepper shakers are somehow overlooked. But right there, in episode two, when we’ve only really gotten so see Deborah bristle at the idea of having anyone help her with her comedy, they make it crystal clear that this is a woman who is longing for partnership, companionship, a relationship of equals. Of mutual respect and tenderness and laughter and love. For someone that makes her better. 

She collects pairs, for fucks sake! 

And Ava gets her the pepper shaker, and earns some respect for not quitting when the going got tough, and presents herself as a worthy contender for Deborah’s time and her generosity and her love.

killing eve people - I’ve cracked the code

So a while ago I saw people speculating about this

a lot of people were thinking it ties back to Arthurian myth and the legend of the Black Knight (and I’m not exactly saying they’re wrong) BUT, I think it’s a pun. That’s all, a simple pun.

Because that isn’t the black knight, that’s a dark knight.... and for Villanelle it’s a “dark night of the soul”. Though most people would just call it an identity crisis.

And isn’t that exactly what villanelle is going through in season 3?

A perfect way to show villanelle coming face to face with her dark k/night of the soul, (and with the 12/Helene literally standing between her and her new found way of life).

I haven’t seen killing eve since the last season aired but the thing that still swirls around my mind is the dancing scene:

When Villanelle gestured towards an old dancing couple and asked Eve if she wanted to be like that, I didn’t think she meant the two of them, necessarily, just generally growing old with someone, or dancing like that. And I don’t think Villanelle meant if Eve wanted that with her, specifically, either, just curious to know what Eve wants.

So when Eve’s immediate answer automatically includes Villanelle, the softest of smiles on Villanelle’s face is so timid and heartbreaking to me, because Eve has chosen her and sees them together without even thinking. When Eve has always been pulling away or denying their bond and her nature, and Villanelle has always been the one chasing, upfront with her adoration of Eve, here Eve is, letting it slip - so casually - that she sees the old couple dancing as the two of them. And Villanelle is so happy.

The whole closeness of the dance and conversation, how they’re able to communicate at a deeper level than we’ve ever seen them without even looking at each other, the understanding they’ve reached here that follows later in the bridge finale - this is my favourite scene. Not the kiss, not the bridge, not the tension, the jealousy, the meaningful looks, as much as they’re enjoyable. Just the two of them, dancing without pretenses. Like their whole relationship, a bit fumbling at first, not knowing who leads and who follows, and then settling into their own rhythm. Understanding without being told. Knowing without seeing.

if i were a show runner i would shoot a scene where two characters everyone wants together are close to kissing - make them actually kiss in just one take - release the version where they don’t kiss, release a picture of the take of them kissing on a fan account and make everyone think it’s a manip THEN months later when the fandom’s dead reveal the kiss actually happened
