You Don't Think The Digital Divide Includes The UK?
When thinking of a digital divide, most would automatically assume a global East and West split. Whilst this is provisionally true, we have drastic splits within our own nations, such as the UK too!!
Did you know 1/4 people in the UK have never used the internet, and a third of households don't even have the internet!
This could be for a number of factors including:
-Economical reasons
-Social reasons
-Gender theories
-Age differences
... and many more!
For instance 70% of people who live in social housing aren't online, whilst 38% of people not online are also unemployed. Therefore, 49% of people who don't use the internet are in the lower socio-economic groups. Some people forget you have to have money to buy the technology in the first place, it isn't a freebie in society.
BUT IT'S NOT ALL ABOUT MONEY
The digital divide can be due to age differences now, especially as the new generations born are born as 'digital natives'. 39% of people who don't use the internet are over 65!
BUT DON'T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER
Yes folks, the digital divide gets more complex. As technology is changing and improving so rapidly, and is becoming an integral part of society, a lot of the older generation are actually getting involved. Whilst they might just want to get to see what the buzz is about, or make their lives easier by paying bills online, a lot of technology does benefit a wide demographic. For instance the Kindle has varying font sizes, so someone of the the older generation would find it easier reading off a e-reader, than from a book.
We hope that has opened your mind slightly to the diverse and complex side to the UK digital divide, as some issues are going on right under your nose!

The Digital Divide, Lesson Recap
When you think of publishing you probably think of the current model that is used by the US and Europe. Yet, this isn’t the case for countries such as China, Latin America and other developing countries.
Digital models are not universal and this is down to something very simple... Not everyone has the Internet.
By not having the same access as us limits how publishing can develop. People lack skills to get jobs in digital media, and this leads to many others leaving their country for one with a more developed digital economy.
Whilst the current generation, known as the ‘digital natives’, are growing up with a digital literacy, many older generations are required to learn skills that many find natural.
The digital divide can be split into the following areas:
-       Political
-       Social
-       Economical
-       Academically
-       Culturally
These divides are split all around the world and continue change digital literacy develops. Surprisingly, small-westernized countries are the most likely to be most connected and in turn have the best adoption and least digital divide.
As countries continue to develop the digital divide must be challenged, and with industrialized nations having better infrastructures for Internet services the north/south hemisphere divide might end up switching over, as developing countries build greater infrastructures than those we can change.
