Tumgik
Nice whumpy thing: when people are intensely pragmatic about their injuries illnesses.
“Listen, if I pass out…”
“If you let up pressure, I’ll bleed out. So just, don’t move.”
“I know it ill hurt, just do what you need to.”

Let's not forget a few of my favorites:
When all seems well with the whumpee, but the caretaker or whumper sees the tremor in their hands and knows they're legitimately struggling
Fumbling, grasping hands slick with blood
Butterfly-soft touches from caretaker - touches so gentle that they could be a distant dream
A whumpee who relies on their hands to communicate, and being so unwell (fever? blood loss? hypothermic? drugged?) that they can't express any clear responses or requests
Powerful hands restricting the whumpee's movement - whether it be torture or so a medic can treat them
op i love you for bringing this back to my attention
Hands in Whump
-Running a gentle hand through Whumpee's hair, whispering reassurances into their ear.
-Grabbing Whumpee's arm to stop them from escaping, digging their nails into the flesh.
-A red, stinging handprint left on the side of Whumpee's face after a slap.
-Caretaker using their thumb to wipe tears off of Whumpee's face.
-Fingers intertwined, comforting pressure on the hand.
-Placing the back of the hand on Whumpee's forehead to check their fever.
-A hand broken after being stomped on by Whumper, Whumpee trying to get their fingers to move.
-Palms and fingers burned on a hot pan or stove.
-Fingernails being broken or ripped out.
-Cupping Whumpee's face.
-A hand clasped over the mouth to keep Whumpee from screaming
-Gentle hands applying bandages to aching wounds.
-An outstretched hand, offering aid and protection.
-Hands in the air to signal surrender.
-Whumpee covering their face with their hands so nobody can see them cry.
-Hands clasped over the back of Whumpee's neck as protection from an imminent beating.
And so, so much more!

whenever I'm burnt out, I bake and I take a walk and cut back on caffeine. I play a bit of sudoku and put together a puzzle and do laundry and mop. I open all of the windows and air out my house. I groom my dog and put on a face mask. Some of it is meditative, and all of it is some form of self-care. Everyone's reset button is different, and most people require sequences of meditative actions like me before they can start recharging and restocking spoons.
I hope this post blesses you with another spoon <3
if yall ever want like serious advice from me about how to solve burnout as a creative it's like...
literally ignore it. stop pushing. go do something else, enjoy your life, fill it with other things, do what brings you joy in the moment if you can.
go to the gym, take a walk to touch grass and look at dogs and smell flowers, cook dinner, watch tv with your friends, talk about your feelings as needed with ppl you trust, take a drive and blast your music, do the chores you need to do, the job hunting slog you need to do, read books that aren't for research, stop cordoning off your brain for The Craft or The Draft or whatever the fuck
forget about the project, stop thinking about it for as long as it takes to be excited again.
fuckin rest, basically

when a powerful figure is reduced to kneeling. when the lord is forced to bow. when the exile stumbles into an unwelcoming bar. when the “beast” is chained by their horns. when a god is dragged behind their enemy’s chariot, a captive and trophy. when the loyal “guard dog” character is muzzled and the silver-tongued thief falls silent in horror.
that’s the shit
it’s about the contrapasso. the reversal of roles and the sudden, plunging terror of being unable to hide.

And people say modern whump is boring
what about being stuck in a car while sick? the gang is on their way to a job in a blizzard and get stuck, and they're struggling to take care of the sick character. a flat tire in a cell phone dead zone that requires them to walk in the heat, forcing the sick character to either walk with them or wait in a hot car. i think there's a lot here :)

reminder that you can and most certainly should be self indulgent in your whump writing. no that's not too much blood. yes you should add a whipping scene. you think it's over the top? it's not enough. if you're not giggling and screeching internally and kicking your feet then what even is the point

When an unconscious character is rolled onto their side by caretaker(s) using their shoulder and hip for leverage and there's a just the slightest lag as their limp form is rolled and their head stays in its former position before lolling over with the rest of the movement.

Be honest with yourself. We both know if you’re telling yourself that you’re “just curious” as you type “[character name] sickfic” into the search bar, you’re already too far gone

I love the trope of the badass character who can face impossible odds time and time again and still walk away. The ones who can take on an entire room of guards or a league of assassins by themselves through their fighting skills, marksmanship, or intellect.
However, nothing bores me more than when this character does this and walks away without a scratch. It just shows there are no real stakes and the character is never in any real danger so what's the point?
Instead, give me a hero outnumbered 30 to 1 and who still wins, but they are shot up, bloody, bruised, and broken. Let them barely make it back to their safe house before collapsing in pain and exhaustion. Let them have to be patched up or out of commission for a while so they can heal. THEN I will believe there are actual stakes to future conflicts and there is a chance that character might not make it out the next time. Doing this will leave me on the edge of my seat the next time they find themselves in a similar situation instead of just sighing as they once again avoid hundreds of bullets without a scratch.
Without showing that they are human who aren't perfect and can actually be hurt, you lose so much empathy and emotional attachment to the character.
So, let them bleed. Let them be in pain. Let them struggle. Then let them get back up and continue on despite all of that.
That's the badass I want to see.
