It’s been another year where helloMuller has been steadily moving more and more into design for the entertainment industries in all its forms and quite literally embraced Designing Fiction & Branding Stories — from working with Dupuis, attending SDCC and seeing the X-Men branding translated into a larger than life event, to Mazebook receiving a ton of accolades and seeing the IHEARTCOMIX identity coming to life. Not to mention the numerous Marvel X books, and game branding projects that we’ll keep under wraps for now.
A lot of new branding projects were kicked off this year which will all be unleashed in 2024, including a few that will surprise you hopefully! But more importantly (for me at least) it was the year where I finally got round to relaunching hellomuller.com after many false starts and display, for the first time, a decade+ worth of projects in one space. A massive thank you to my creative partners, collaborators and clients for choosing helloMuller. Let’s do some great stuff together in 2024!
Since starting helloMuller as a studio back in 2011 it’s gone through many changes (like myself), figuring out what defines the work and what values it can bring to client and collaborators—eventually formalising through many projects as a clear vision.
Designing Fiction & Branding Stories.
Helping storytellers, startups, innovators and content creators make an impact on the cultural landscape through unifying narrative-led design and storytelling into compelling identities and brands that inspire a global audience. From the world’s biggest pop culture icons and creators to the innovators of tomorrow’s entertainment and technology.
For the first time since 2011 the site now catalogues those projects—From Marvel to DC, Google to Wired, and everything in between.
The new website is an attempt at something new. No deep case studies or project pages, but a stream of project cards that capture the essence of each piece of work—a fluid stream of pop culture design.
Check the site here: https://www.hellomuller.com — and enjoy!
In 2011 I decided to turn my hobby and side hustle helloMuller into a proper business. Up to that moment my site was a catalogue of everything I did: full time agency work, art collabs and the odd freelance gig.
I pulled down the site and made plans to replace it with a site focussing solely on helloMuller projects going forward. Luckily I managed to get some clients, and “I’ll start on the site next month” turned into a year and then another, and another. The masterplan of a grand relaunch stuffed with case studies became 1-page highlights of recent work instead. Until now.
After a lot of false starts I finally have a brand new helloMuller site. It’s not a 1 page highlight reel, but neither full of case studies; but somewhere in-between: a catalogue of work indexing over a decade of work, collected together for the first time.
🚨I’m coming to Antwerp!
✍️On October 28th I’ll be signing my work at the legendary comic book store Mekanik Strip — returning to the spot where my career in comics started many, many years ago.
From setting foot in the store as a high school art student, Mekanik has been the place where comics became a true passion. As a fan (and later employee) I spent hours every week in the store, building my collection and making friends.
Over the years the store became the first place I would exhibit my work (which led to me being hired for my first design job); and eventually helped pave the way for my move to London and to many design adventures in the comic book world.
So it is with great pleasure that I’m coming back to my hometown and the place that gave so much to me, and celebrate their 40th anniversary with them! Hope to see you there!
TRIALS OF X Vol. 12 is out now, and marks the final collection in the ‘anthology’ style X collections that began with DAWN OF X and continued with REIGN OF X. 42 Books designed over 4 years.
What a ride!
BLACKING OUT, the graphic novel from Chip Kosher & Peter Krause, with Giulia Brusco, Ed Dukeshire, and myself on design is coming to Dark Horse Cokics. Originally released as an Euro BD sized book via Kickstarter, it will now get a new hardcover release from Dark Horse on April 23rd 2024.
Here’s the new cover with art by Patric Reynolds, colours by Jacob Phillips and logo by me.
What an amazing night at the X-Men: Hellfire Gala in San Diego. Organised by Disney & Marvel during the San Diego Comic-Con, the fan experience/party brought the X-Men franchise to life an epic way. Fantastic to see the X-Men brand permeating the whole event and seeing the design langue helloMuller developed these last few years come to life at such a scale. A pretty grand way to cap off SDCC 2023.
Rather than making new business cards I’m creating new square postcards as giveaways showing a sampling of work. I will have a bunch with me at San Diego Comic-Con next month. Let’s do BUSINESS.
Ending the week with the fantastic news that helloMuller Ltd. has received an Award of Excellence at the 64th Annual Communication Arts Design Competition, and will be included in the 64th Design Annual this September for the design of MAZEBOOK.
Thank you judges, and thank you Dark Horse Comics, Editor Daniel Chabon, and especially author Jeff Lemire for going with it when I suggested we do a cloth-bound, embroidered edition.
