Dreams & Unconsciousness
What messages do both texts send about the inner workings of the human mind?
The Freudian theory of unconsciousness says that thoughts and feelings begin in the human mind at an unconscious level, and can influence a person without their knowledge. His theories about dreams say that these unconscious ideas and desires manifest in our dreams.
In both Hamlet and Hannibal, we see our main protagonist afflicted by dreams, hallucinations, visions, and ghosts; all representations of their deeper unconscious motivations.
Hamlet sees his father’s ghost and is lost in his own mind and feelings. The truth of who the killer is comes to him in visions, dreams- madness! Will’s dreams also show him what is really going on before he becomes consciously aware. Will and Hamlet both process their grief through hallucinations, they see ghosts when there is a realization deep in their minds that they have not yet faced.
Ultimately, these texts represent how the mind processes grief and trauma. They show the audience how our unconscious beliefs can break us if we don’t deal with them in healthy ways. Both protagonists grapple with intense grief and hatred for killers, and no matter what they do on the surface they can not escape themselves.

The Struggle to Kill a Killer
What values are reinforced by each text? How do the two texts show how values change over time?
Okay- despite all my other prattling on I lowkey think this is the most important theme in both Hamlet and Hannibal. Essentially, both show how becoming a killer to destroy a killer ultimately leads to no one winning and everyone dead.
There is a parallel strong change of character in both Hamlet and Will. Their characters both start off with a powerful inner drive to stop killers because they feel grief and are against violence. But then, in their drive to take down the villains, they progress through madness to become very violent themselves. Both Shakespeare’s Hamlet and Hannibal use their unique narratives to show the audience how violence and greed leads only to destruction and tragedy.
I mean, just about everybody dies at the end of both stories! More than a little dramatic, I’d say!  >.<
When thinking about why these writers would choose such dramatic endings... I think it’s part of the message I’m taking from both stories. Despite all the murder, I think they both give human life a lot of value. But instead of telling the audience directly ‘hey! Did you know killing people is bad?’ the authors are using the arc of their stories to show us. Think about it- Will and Hamlet start off noble, and then the closer they get to killing the killer the worse things go for them. They clearly start to break down mentally, and in their final triumphant moments the narrative stops us short. Finally we realize they destroyed themselves just as much as their antagonists and we see this is not a victory.

Value of Life
Tumblr media
What values are reinforced by each text? How do the two texts show how values change over time?
Both Hamlet and Hannibal are, in essence, abt death, grief, and power. This means that the value the narrative places in a life is super relevant! It shows a lot about the time and culture the stories were written in.
In Shakespearian times, religion was hella important. In Hamlet we see the use of religion as order and control, taking away the choice of an individual to decide the meaning of death and instead using “divine order” to control how death is perceived. (See Ophelia’s suicide, hamlet contemplating death, claudius asking for forgiveness) Compare this to Hannibal’s view of humans equal to animals (meat is meat, right?).
There's a contrast of intense divine order to none at all. In Hannibal human life is “honored” in the character's mind by doing things we the audience see as horrible. This connects to modern day values- the text has impact because we believe very different things compared to the characters! (I hope. xD) The perspectives of people in Shakespearian times is equally important in how the play gains meaning in the watcher’s minds.
While these stories have very different cultural contexts, they both contemplate and question the value of life. They are historically very far apart, and yet writers today have the same questions people did so long ago. Does one life have more value than another? When is it okay to take a life, if ever? How do we grapple with mental health? :0 Disruption of order is shown in very different ways between the two, and yet both tales tell the same symbolic lesson: taking life is a greedy and ultimately doomed way of gaining power.

Masculinity and Grief
What values are reinforced by each text? How do the two texts show how values change over time?
Hamlet and Hannibal both show similar values in how the narrative treats men when they are struggling mentally. Hamlet’s struggles with grief and depression are misconstrued as brokenheartedness or madness from several outside perspectives, cuz the values of the characters (and author?!) make them unable to understand how he could be sad.
Will's struggles with mental health are only consequential to the surrounding characters because they affect his ability to do his job. Both stories show the protag as isolated because other characters are unable to understand or be caring. It’s soo much more complex than I can even get into on tumblr, but like, all the themes of the stories connect to this. Male main characters are going through it- and everyone around them is only alarmed because it disturbs the order and our main dudes abilities to fill their roles!!
This totally goes together with my other post- when everybody else frames ur struggles as shameful, ofc ur not gonna be able to express them properly!! Like I said earlier, it is wild how even with all this time between the stories, these issues are still relevant! I think it is worth noting that the writers of both Hannibal (the show) and Shakespeare are men. (smthn smthn expression of the author's values and struggles through the text… ) ;/

How mental health is dealt with/recognized (first person)
(What values are reinforced by each text? How do the two texts show how values change over time?)
Both Hamlet and Will aren’t able to properly recognize their own true mental health struggles. Will insists he must be sick physically when Hannibal says his issues are mental, and Hamlet chooses to act “mad” instead of acknowledging his depression. In both stories, their struggles are real and important, but they cannot face the truth of their issues. :(
The context isn’t the same for these two blorbos! (Will literally has encephalitis lmao-) but both stories depict guys with the same value problem: it is preferable to frame your struggles as madness than genuinely confront what’s wrong.
It’s kinda crazy how there is such a parallel in values between stories from 2013 and Shakespearean times!?!1! I guess it goes to show how mental health has always been tough to deal with :’)

A good example of use of colour/colour theory!! The show uses very dark sets & filters, so the use of white shirts in these scenes really makes the red of the blood stand out.
The cinematic parallel @rocktheholygrail is pointing out here is stunning. In both Hannibal and Hamlet our main guys (Hamlet/Will) start out strongly opposing the villains & murder (Hannibal/Claudius) then end up as killers themselves!
