It was definitely fun to draw but I'm not sure if it's fun to look at too. Working through one of my favorite books on figure drawing again, Michael Hampton's Figure Drawing - Design and Invention. Lots of things I haven't understood the last time I found much easier this time. I decided to spice things a bit up by adding some fanart from Marvel, Nintendo and Adventure time to make things less dry. Hope it worked!

In order to see if how well I will be able to apply in my day to day painting what I’ve been learning in my course I did this little guy. Probably I could have come up with something more original but I think this old peasant's portrait from Warcraft III is just perfect for such an exercise. I started by tracing the original image. Painting on top and giving it a warm tint I came up with the Ambient Occlusion pass. Basically it's 2 values of dark orange on top of a white background with some blending. Then I created the ambient light pass. You might point out that on the inside of the face it would show less green and pick up more of the material color and I have to give you that. It's something I didn't consider at the time I made the pass but I was sure I would be able to fix it along the way to the final image.   Adding the color pass by multiplying it on top with 65%. This was a point in the process where I was a bit worried because it is still a bit of a guessing work for me. Same thing with adding the light layer on top using just a normal layer. Last thing before painting on top was to use an Overlay layer in order to push the saturation around the terminator areas. You can see how the image shifts from totally derp into a "well, not too bad" version of itself. As recommended by my friend Robin I did some Joe Madueira studies. Also some random sketches and a cartoon wolf with a hand gun which is basically the only thing on this I entirely came up with myself ;).
