The Main Character by Will Wood is a masterpiece of a song, the lyrics are really interesting to me. I have spent most of my life feeling like I am a side character at best, so it really interesting that people can think that they are the centre of everything and everyone revolves around them. The desperation that is in the line ‘you have to like me’ is really cool, that phrase is something that I would assume that someone like me who is a people pleaser would say, someone who has to be liked by everyone. It takes a different light in this song, instead of a people pleaser, it is someone who has to believe that everyone loves them because they are ‘the main character’, they are the chosen one and need everyone to validate that they are special.

My mum just came in to my room as I was cleaning out my cosplay cubby hole and trying on some of the stuff in preparation for a con coming up. I love Pirate!Zuko AUs, Sokka is just crushing on the cute pirate boy that has 23 daggers on him at all times. Katara is questioning if they are safe with the band of ex-Fire Navy turned pirates and Aang is running about drinking tea with Iroh and having to be pulled away from all sharp objects (of which there are many). Also the only activity that Zuko knows about is crimes, thus rendering Sokka's flirting tactics useless as Katara won't let him become a criminal yet.

I know there is nothing that I can say that is new in the AtLA fandom, I just really need to info dump so here we go.

I love in the show the view on the people of the fire nation is shown, they are affected by the cruelty of the fire nation in their daily lives and oppression which is something that you would not originally think would be the case for a nation that is rather successful in a war at first. In the episode the headband, when Katara and Sokka are called in as Aang’s parents, there was a throwaway line said by the principal about Aang being sent to a ‘reform school’ before being followed with ‘by that I mean the coal mines’. The punishment for a child misbehaving in class and getting in to a small school fight is being sent to a coal mine, no wonder Azula feared not being perfect in the eyes of her father if these we the penalties for being a normal kid.

This is also not limited to the ordinary citizens, as seen with Zuko, who is a victim of the fire nation and its brutality when it comes to mistakes. Zuko was the crowned prince is thrown out after one little mistake and I know that this is because Ozai is cruel and an idiot, who couldn’t do the math to work out how long Ursa had been pregnant to figure out that Zuko was in fact his child. But it still stands the fact that a singular mistake was all that it took for Zuko to be thrown out for good and to be put on to an endless wild goose chase to find a myth of a person that hadn’t been seen in 100 years. Even when he is back in the fire nation after ‘redeeming’ his honour, you can clearly tell how cautious he is about making mistakes and how he talks around his own father, compared to how he speaks around the Gaang or his uncle, the difference is extremely obvious and notice.
